BBC apologizes for streaming Bob Vylan's 'antisemitic' Glastonbury set

June 30 (UPI) -- The BBC has apologized for live-streaming Bob Vylan's Glastonbury Music Festival set over the weekend, calling it "deeply offensive" and "antisemitic."
The British rap duo -- comprised of artists Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan -- led the concertgoers, some of whom were waving Palestinian flags, in chants of "Death, death to the IDF," "From the river to the sea" and "Free, free Palestine" at the high-profile event, according to video posted on Bobby's Instagram account.
After receiving expressions of what he described as being of both "support and hatred" over the weekend, Bobby doubled down on his message with an Instagram post Sunday, stating, "I said what I said."
But the BBC is expressing regret over sharing the duo's festival performance with a global audience.
"Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC's output but one performance within our live-streams included comments that were deeply offensive. The BBC respects freedom of expression, but stands firmly against incitement to violence. The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves. We welcome Glastonbury's condemnation of the performance," the BBC said in a lengthy statement Monday.
"The performance was part of a live stream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer. The judgment on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines. In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand. The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen," the statement continued.
"In light of this weekend, we will look at our guidance around live events so we can be sure teams are clear on when it is acceptable to keep output on air."

Instagram's rolling out the ability to actually listen to a preview of a song that you've shared from Spotify in IG Stories, as opposed to just providing a Spotify link, further refining its music engagement elements. So now, when you share a Spotify music sticker within your IG Stories, viewers will be able to listen to it in-stream. Up till now, you've been able to share Spotify music stickers, but that only provided a link back to the Spotify track. The updated sticker now also includes audio, which is a big improvement. Yet, at the same time, functionally, it's not really new, as you've been able to post music in Stories since forever. But you haven't been able to combine Spotify song sharing within Stories in the same way, to it builds on that functionality. Though you have been able to share songs to your Stories via 'Add Yours' music stickers, while you can also now share songs from Spotify to your IG Notes, a feature that Instagram added last month. And now, you can also share what you're listening to on Spotify direct to Stories as well, adding another music engagement option in the app. WhatsApp added the same for its version of Stories, in WhatsApp Status, last month. The option adds another means to counter the rising influence of TikTok, and potentially replace TikTok's presence in this respect, if TikTok ever ends up getting banned in the U.S. TikTok has become a key platform for music promotion, with music publishers now focusing on the app as an essential connector, with some even changing their artists' song names to better align with TikTok trends. But if TikTok goes bye-bye, as a result of the 'Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,' then all that music engagement will have to go elsewhere, and IG seems to be setting itself up as the best alternative in this respect. Though YouTube is also adding music features to tap into the same opportunity, and with TikTok continuing to get extensions from Trump, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere either way. But still, it's another music engagement option, which will provide more ways for IG users to share their favorite tracks. Nixing visas is a wise US response to Bob Vylan's naked Jew-hate
Kudos to the State Department for revoking the visas for British punk-rappers Bob Vylan: Our country doesn't need to let naked antisemites in for a tour. The pair led the Glastonbury Musical Festival crowd in chants of raw hate, including 'From the river to the sea, Palestine must be, will be, inshallah, it will be free,' and 'Death, death to the IDF.' The first is a demand to expel or kill all the Jews of Israel; the latter, transparently, is an outright call for the slaughter of the Jewish state's defenders. With tens of thousands joining in from the audience, it was a truly Hitler-worthy spectacle. But also ample reason for the feds to nix the duo's visas for a coming tour: No foreigner has a right to visit this nation and make big money for promoting hate and terrorism. Bob Vylan also faces backlash back home: Prime Minster Keir Starmer and a host of other pols have denounced them; the BBC is squirming over having broadcast the performance and the United Talent Agency says it will stop repping the band. They also face a police investigation, but the UK's efforts to police speech are a mess full of double- and triple-standards. To be clear: US citizens have the right to blare hate speech as vile as Bob Vylan's, but the First Amendment doesn't mean we need to let Nazis come visit. Cheers to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Justice Department's Leo Terrell for their attention to this matter.
