Newcastle make improved £40m offer for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa
As Isak trains separately from his Newcastle teammates in an attempt to force a move to Liverpool, Wissa missed Brentford's 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest last weekend as he, in turn, attempted to push through a transfer to St James' Park. Newcastle insist Isak will not be allowed to leave the club this summer. Wissa's potential arrival could yet alter that narrative.
Despite suggestions from within St James' Park that Wissa is seen primarily as a replacement for Callum Wilson following his move to West Ham earlier this summer, it is striking how much the 28-year-old's Premier League scoring statistics from last season mirror those of Isak. While Wissa scored 19 goals in 35 appearances for Brentford, all from open play, Isak managed 23 goals in 34 appearances, with four of those resulting from penalties.
Although Wissa, who turns 29 next month, has only one year remaining on his contract, Brentford are reluctant to lose him after seeing manager Thomas Frank depart for Tottenham, captain Christian Nørgaard head to Arsenal, and Bryan Mbeumo, Wissa's strike parter at the Gtech Community Stadium, leave for Manchester United this summer.
Newcastle's initial £25m offer for the DR Congo striker was rejected but it was widely expected they would return. Their latest offer, submitted within hours of Isak's incendiary Instagram post in which he claimed Newcastle had broken promises and breached his trust, is believed to be an initial £35m with a further £5m in add ons.
Brentford are thought to want between £50m-£60m for Wissa but could well accept Newcastle's offer given the player's attempts to leave the club, which has included deleting all Brentford references from his social media accounts. They have also added forward Dango Ouattara to their ranks, increasing Newcastle's confidence over a deal being done in the coming days.
Any agreement is unlikely to come in time for Howe to field Wissa in Monday night's hotly-anticipated Premier League meeting with Liverpool at St James' Park.

Newcastle's initial bid to to bring in a successor to Isak, namely Yoane Wissa, was rejected out of hand, with Brentford thought to be demanding a fee in the region of £50m for the DR Congo forward. And while talks are ongoing for Wissa, Shearer feels his former club would also need to bring in a replacement for Callum Wilson before the transfer deadline comes around on September 1. 'If that doesn't happen, then he stays, and it becomes really messy. If Liverpool want him, then they put in an offer Newcastle will accept, and if Newcastle can get two players in, because that's what they need, one to replace Isak and one to replace Wilson, then fine. 'They've been trying to do that for the past four or five weeks and haven't been able to. Whether they can do that in the next 10 days is doubtful, but there's still time. 'I think we're just sat here guessing, but last night's statement hasn't done him any favours whatsoever in terms of trying to get Newcastle onside or forcing them into a decision, I think they'll just go the opposite way.' Keely Hodgkinson eases to victory in Lausanne
Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson produced a dominant display to win the women's 800 metres at the Diamond League meet in Lausanne, with British team-mate Georgia Hunter Bell finishing third. Hodgkinson, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury, returned after a 376-day absence in Silesia last weekend to set a world-leading run of one minute and 54.74 seconds, just behind her own national record. With the World Championships in Tokyo coming up next month, Hodgkinson laid down another marker as she made a strong finish in wet conditions to set a new meeting record of 1:55.69. Hunter Bell had been in second place down the home straight but faded in the closing metres as Switzerland's Audrey Werro ran her down to clock 1:57.55. Hodgkinson, 23, had looked in control from the opening part of the race, sitting second behind the pacemaker at the bell, which she took in 56.04 seconds. With only Prudence Sekgodiso for company heading into the final 300m, Hodgkinson soon pulled clear of the South African to coast towards another impressive victory. Hodgkinson's training partner Hunter Bell, meanwhile, must now decide whether to have another crack at the 800m in Tokyo or focus on the 1,500m where she would be looking to add to her Olympic bronze medal from Paris.

Women's Rugby World Cup: England's Megan Jones on dealing with grief
Megan Jones is looking forward to a 'special occasion' when she steps on to the pitch at the Women's Rugby World Cup the year after both her parents died. Jones, whose dad Simon and mum Paula both died between August and December last year, is appearing at her first World Cup since 2017 and heads into this tournament as England vice-captain. The 28-year-old centre has been named in the starting 15 for the Red Roses' tournament opener against the United States at the Stadium of Light and, ahead of Friday's game, shared her experiences of dealing with grief. Jones said: 'I think grief works in different ways. Those that have experienced grief, sometimes you're not always sad, sometimes you're happy and sometimes it doesn't hit you like that. 'It might hit me later or it might hit me in the moment. 'As soon as I step on that pitch, that's all I think about is rugby. That's probably one of my strengths, I don't tend to think too far beyond that. I never really thought of my mum and dad when they were out supporting. 'I've always led with my heart, I'll always be passionate about what I do and that means now a little bit more firepower, I guess, behind me with my mum and dad. 'It's going to be special. Last World Cup my dad was with me in 2017, that was lovely and beautiful. 'It's just going to be another special occasion. It's going to be a lot of firsts, it's still only been a year since my dad hasn't been here. 'It's just a lot of emotions all in one, but they all come in different ways for sure.' England begin the tournament in Sunderland against the USA, who are ranked 10th in the world. USA head coach Sione Fukofuka has named 11 World Cup debutants in the matchday squad, including four in the starting 15. Ilona Maher – the world's most popular rugby player on social media with over eight million followers across her accounts – is one of those making her tournament bow and she lines up at 13 opposite Jones. Asked what it is like coming up against Maher, Jones said: 'I think physics would show that she's probably got a couple of inches on me and a couple of pounds as well. 'I think I've always lived by, it's not the size of the dog, it's the size of the fight in the dog. 'No matter who I come up against, no matter how many followers they've got – she'll be thinking the same – it's how you perform on the pitch, which is the most important bit. 'I always lead with passion and pride. That's what I'll continue to do in whatever game we go against and whoever we go against.'
