Women's Rugby World Cup: England's Megan Jones on dealing with grief

Independent17 hours ago
Megan Jones is looking forward to a 'special occasion' when she steps on to the pitch at the Women's Rugby World Cup the year after both her parents died.
Jones, whose dad Simon and mum Paula both died between August and December last year, is appearing at her first World Cup since 2017 and heads into this tournament as England vice-captain.
The 28-year-old centre has been named in the starting 15 for the Red Roses' tournament opener against the United States at the Stadium of Light and, ahead of Friday's game, shared her experiences of dealing with grief.
Jones said: 'I think grief works in different ways. Those that have experienced grief, sometimes you're not always sad, sometimes you're happy and sometimes it doesn't hit you like that.
'It might hit me later or it might hit me in the moment.
'As soon as I step on that pitch, that's all I think about is rugby. That's probably one of my strengths, I don't tend to think too far beyond that. I never really thought of my mum and dad when they were out supporting.
'I've always led with my heart, I'll always be passionate about what I do and that means now a little bit more firepower, I guess, behind me with my mum and dad.
'It's going to be special. Last World Cup my dad was with me in 2017, that was lovely and beautiful.
'It's just going to be another special occasion. It's going to be a lot of firsts, it's still only been a year since my dad hasn't been here.
'It's just a lot of emotions all in one, but they all come in different ways for sure.'
England begin the tournament in Sunderland against the USA, who are ranked 10th in the world.
USA head coach Sione Fukofuka has named 11 World Cup debutants in the matchday squad, including four in the starting 15.
Ilona Maher – the world's most popular rugby player on social media with over eight million followers across her accounts – is one of those making her tournament bow and she lines up at 13 opposite Jones.
Asked what it is like coming up against Maher, Jones said: 'I think physics would show that she's probably got a couple of inches on me and a couple of pounds as well.
'I think I've always lived by, it's not the size of the dog, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
'No matter who I come up against, no matter how many followers they've got – she'll be thinking the same – it's how you perform on the pitch, which is the most important bit.
'I always lead with passion and pride. That's what I'll continue to do in whatever game we go against and whoever we go against.'

Will Arsenal's transfer hijack of Eberechi Eze signal end for one Gunners star?

Just when Arsenal's transfer window looked to be coming to an uneventful conclusion, the Gunners staged the heist of the summer. Eberechi Eze was Tottenham-bound until Thursday evening. Arsenal ruthlessly swooped with a £60million fee and personal terms swiftly agreed with another wonderful addition to the squad on the way having also dealt a shuddering body blow to their oldest rivals in the process. Even with the signing of Noni Madueke, there has been a need for another creative spark in Mikel Arteta side. A rather tepid attacking performance in Sunday's victory over Manchester United did little to ease those concerns. Martin Odegaard, so often Arsenal's chief creator, endured a difficult 2024-25 campaign after returning from the ankle injury that sidelined him for three months. The club captain's waning influence was an unavoidable factor in another failed title bid and heightened the need for another option if Arsenal are to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool this season. Eze is coming off an outstanding 2024-25 season in south east London and with a World Cup year ahead of him, has the opportunity to cement his place in Thomas Tuchel's side. The Emirates will be his new stage. And rather than serving as a replacement for Odegaard, Eze could be the perfect alternative. There was fair and legitimate concern for Odegaard last season. Far too often, his performances did not pass the eye test and his numbers compared to the 2023-24 season illustrate concerns that only grew as last season wore on. Eze on the other hand enjoyed his best season to date with Palace. His haul of 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions represented a better return than any Arsenal player in those departments, eclipsing Kai Havertz's haul of nine goals and Bukayo Saka's 10 assists. Eze created 57 chances for his Palace teammates last season, more than Kevin de Bruyne, Luis Diaz, Anthony Gordon and Matheus Cunha among others. Despite his indifferent form however, only seven players created more chanced than Odegaard (57) last season with the skipper also top of Arsenal's charts for that metric, clear of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. While it was a huge drop off from the 102 he created in the 2023-24 season, it is still good enough for a top eight spot across the Premier League. Odegaard has so often been one of Arsenal's cleanest strikers of the ball. While he did rediscover his range against Southampton on the final day of last season, he was too often guilty of passing up the opportunity to test the goalkeeper whether it be from distance or inside the box. A tally of 49 shots with 17 on target (a conversation rate on 6.12 per cent) tells its own story. It is not something that fazes Eze. Only five players attempted more shots on goal than the 27-year-old (101) during the 2024-25 campaign. Whether it can be attributed to Arteta's tactical instructions, Arsenal rank low for shots on goal across the board with Eze's 29 efforts on target last season a better return than anyone in the red half of north London. Eze also ranks high for combined shots and chances created last term with only Bruno Fernandes, Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Erling Haaland averaging higher per 90 than Eze's 5.6. His wonderful long-range strikes against Fulham and Aston Villa in the FA Cup demonstrated his willingness to test the goalkeeper from range – with his winning goal in the final against Manchester City showing how dangerous he is breaking into the box. While Eze's arrival will ease the creative burden on Odegaard and add much-needed goals to the Arsenal midfield, there is another reason why Arteta holds him in such high regard. With so much of Arsenal's game built on structure and discipline, Eze offers somewhat of a release, a flamboyant outlet who brings something different from recent midfielders brought to the club in Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi. Eze also measures high in the defensive metrics that will be most pleasing to the Arsenal boss. The Palace star was successful in 157 ground duels last season, comfortably more than any one in the Arsenal squad. More Trending His possession won stats are also impressive with his tally of 146 only bettered by William Saliba and Declan Rice. While one of the most eye-catching players in the top flight, Eze is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Arsenal have strengthened across the board this summer with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres all in place. Eze's arrival will raise doubts over the future of Gabriel Martinelli. There is also the argument Arteta still does not have a natural left winger in the vein of Rodrygo or Anthony Gordon to balance his attack. But the Gunners boss now has considerable depth and variety in his bid to end the club's long wait for a league title. McGinn comparisons 'a really good compliment' for Mulligan

Josh Mulligan is flattered by comparisons with John McGinn as he "strives" to emulate the Scotland midfielder and former Hibs a summer arrival from Dundee, has impressed in his early Easter Road career and scored a stunning strike last weekend to seal the 2-0 win over Livingston and set up a Premier Sports Cup quarter-final trip to Rangers next 22-year-old is now looking to help Hibs build a first-leg lead over Legia Warsaw in tonight's Conference League play-off."Obviously McGinn was a great player, he's still a great player," said Mulligan."To be compared to someone like him is a really good compliment. But I just thought I'd focus on my own game and not try to get caught up in that or start comparing myself to other players."It's a nice comparison. In the last five years, he's been a massive player for Scotland as well, probably one of the most influential."To look at him, he's someone you want to look at and strive for."With Hibs' exploits in Europe catching the eye, Mulligan hopes it can help him break into Steve Clarke's Scotland squad and become an international team-mate of McGinn."There's other players my age that have managed to break in," the Under-21 midfielder added."You try not to think about it too much. You just think, play well in the next game. If you keep doing that, you never know."The European stuff has definitely helped because you're playing against better teams and more exposure and all that stuff."Hopefully in the next two games against Legia, we can get a good result and make a bit of history as well."
