"Entire country is witnessing a kind of tension and polarisation": Congress leader Ashok Gehlot

India Gazettea day ago

Udaipur (Rajasthan) [India], June 12 (ANI): Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said the country is facing growing tension and polarisation, which he called 'dangerous for democracy'.
Gehlot added that democracy becomes strong only when all religions and castes move together. He said saving the Constitution is more important than just winning elections and added that the opposition plays a key role in protecting people's rights.
Speaking to the mediapersons, Ashok Gehlot said, 'The entire country is witnessing a kind of tension and polarisation which is there for the first time in post-independent India. It's not in anyone's interest. Democracy becomes strong only when all religions and castes move together. Winning elections is one thing, but saving democracy is another thing. Slowly, democracy is being murdered, and the Constitution is in danger. Rahul Gandhi is repeatedly saying to save the Constitution. Opposition is important in democracy, and what is a government in a democracy without opposition?... Opposition raises voice for the people...'
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the BJP-led NDA government has restricted public access to election documents, just 11 days after a Punjab and Haryana High Court order demanding transparency.
Khera, who is the Chairman of the the party's Media and Publicity Department, claimed that on December 9 last year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Election Commission to share CCTV footage and Form 17C records from the Haryana elections, leading to the Election Commission of India (ECI) writing to the Law Ministry proposing changes to Rule 93 of the Conduct of Election Rules, arguing that allowing inspection of 'all other papers' created an 'administrative burden'.
In a post on X, he further claimed that by December 20 last year, the rule was amended and notified.
He said that the phrase 'all other papers relating to the election shall be open to public inspection' was replaced with 'all other papers as specified in these rules', quietly narrowing public access.
'The government has quietly restricted public access to election documents, just 11 days after a High Court order demanding transparency. On Dec 9, 2024, the Punjab & Haryana High Court directed the Election Commission to share CCTV footage and Form 17C records from the Haryana elections, he said on social media platform X, based on an article.'
'On Dec 17, the EC wrote to the Law Ministry proposing changes to Rule 93 of the Conduct of Election Rules, arguing that allowing inspection of 'all other papers' created an 'administrative burden'. By 10:23 PM on Dec 20, the rule was amended and notified. The phrase 'all other papers relating to the election shall be open to public inspection' was replaced with 'all other papers as specified in these rules', quietly narrowing public access,' Khera said.
The Congress leader claimed that the amendment created a legal 'ambiguity' and contradicted the original intent of the rule in place since 1961.
The amendment effectively blocks access to CCTV footage, video recordings, and other electronic records, none of which are 'specified' in the old rulebook.
He said the amendment was done after the High Court ordered the release of those materials. 'The timing and speed, just 11 days from court order to notification, are notable,' Khera added.(ANI)

Vijay Rupani Seen In Instagram Video At Airport Moments Before Air India Crash

A video filmed by two British nationals at Ahmedabad airport captured the last known visuals of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, minutes before all of them were killed in a London-bound Air India plane crash on Thursday. A clip posted by London-based yoga coach Jamie Meek and his partner Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek shows them seated at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and sharing their experiences during the India visit, when the senior BJP leader passes by. Dressed in a navy-blue Nehru jacket, Rupani is seen talking over the phone as he walks through the departure lounge. The video, intended as a lighthearted farewell to India, was shared by the two Britons on Instagram just before they boarded the flight. "Goodbye India," Jamie said in the video. "We are at the airport, just boarding." The 68-year-old Former Chief Minister was en route to London to visit his wife and daughter. He was seated in 2D on Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which took off at 1:38 pm with 242 people on board. Moments after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into a residential wing of a medical college in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area. It plummeted into a hostel block, smashing through the dining hall and subsequently going up in flames. Eyewitnesses near the crash site reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low. Rescue operations were swift but hampered by flames and dense smoke. Only one person survived. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu later confirmed Mr Rupani's death. Vijay Rupani, 68, served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, he and his family migrated to India during the political unrest in Southeast Asia and settled in Rajkot. He began his political journey as a student activist and steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a municipal corporator in 1987. Over the decades, Mr Rupani held various portfolios, including transport, water supply, and labour. He resigned as Chief Minister in 2021 as part of the BJP's leadership reshuffle ahead of state polls.

Vellarikundu taluk Junior Superintendent suspended over objectionable FB post criticising Ahmedabad plane crash victim

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 13 (ANI): A. Pavithran, the Junior Superintendent of Vellarikundu taluk, has been suspended for an objectionable Facebook post criticising Ranjitha G. Nair, who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Revenue Minister of Kerala, K Rajan, shared a social media post and called the junior superintendent's act despicable. Sharing the Facebook post, Rajan wrote, 'Vellarikundu taluk Junior Superintendent A. Pavithran has been suspended for posting a Facebook post criticising Ranjitha G. Nair, who died in a plane crash. This is a despicable act on the part of the Deputy Tehsildar. After this post came to our attention, an order was issued to suspend him immediately.' Ranjitha Gopakimar, hailing from Thiruvalla in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, was among the victims of the London-bound Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday, her family confirmed. A London-bound Air India flight, carrying 242 people onboard, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport today, striking a doctors' hostel and claiming 241 lives. Kerala BJP chief and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandesekhar posted on X, 'Tributes to Ranjitha R. Nair from Kozhencherry, who lost her life in the Ahmedabad plane crash.' Ranjitha, who worked as a nurse in the United Kingdom, was on the ill-fated flight and has been confirmed to be dead, her relatives said. She is survived by her two children and her mother, who currently reside in Thiruvalla. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement has also been scrutinised. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded to a post in which Amit Shah could be seen saying, 'This is an accident, and nobody can stop accidents.' Replying to Shah's statement, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, 'Is this what the Union Home Minister should be saying now? It is most insensitive.' Congress leader Pawan Khera also attacked Shah and posted, 'When a plane crashes and people die, the least a Home Minister can offer is a promise of accountability, not a shrug and a lecture on fate. 'Nobody can stop accidents' is an abdication. If nothing can be prevented, why do we have ministries at all? Aviation accidents are not acts of God - they are preventable. That's why we have aviation regulators, safety protocols, and crisis response systems. By the Home Minister's logic, should we stop investing in safety infrastructure, regulation, or crisis preparedness altogether? Just leave it to fate and call it a day?' (ANI)
