Costco finally gets approval from Escambia County to build Pensacola warehouse store
After winning approval from the county's Development Review Committee on Wednesday, the retailer can now move forward with building a 172,580-square-foot store at 225 E. Nine Mile Road that will include a liquor store, tire center and a gas station.
Costco officially set its eyes on the Pensacola region in June of 2024 when they filed its first development proposal. They went through five submissions before finally getting the go-ahead from the DRC to plant its roots in the Pensacola area. Costco still has to go through some additional review phases such as permitting before they can start building.
Costco is a membership warehouse club with a cult following that has hundreds of locations worldwide and offers a wide selection of merchandise ranging from groceries, furniture and electronics to pet insurance, bottled water delivery and travel packages.
What makes Costco different: Costco could finally be coming to Pensacola. How is it different from BJ's and Sam's?
Before they can build, Costco must first demolish the existing building on the corner of Chemstrand and East Nine Mile roads. They also plan improvements to the existing plazas' parking lot and entryways. The warehouse will have 830 parking spaces.
Planet Fitness, the last remaining tenant in the building, is opening another gym across the street that they're aiming to debut before the end of the year.
The company previously told the News Journal they plan to open their new gym in early September and will close the existing Planet Fitness shortly before the new one opens, which will likely be a week before the debut.
Planet Fitness' departure will make way for Costco's entrance, but not everything will change inside the plaza. Some of the existing, freestanding businesses inside the plaza will remain, such as Dairy Queen, Sam's Seafood and Wells Fargo.
Where will the new Costco be built in Pensacola?
Costco's first Pensacola store will open at 225 E. Nine Mile Road.
Costco Pensacola opening date
There is not yet a projected opening date for the store.
Costco's policy is to not comment on future stores until two-to-three months out from its opening date.
It takes 110 days to build a Costco store, according to their 30-year partner MG2, so the retailer could still open its first local store this year.
Why did the Pensacola Costco take so long?
Costco spent over a year deliberating with Escambia County officials and ironing out their plans for the Nine Mile Road store.
Escambia County initially received an application from Thomas Engineering, a Tampa-based engineering firm, last June on behalf of Costco to develop its first Pensacola store inside an existing shopping center on Nine Mile Road.
The group resubmitted its proposal in October and painted a clearer picture of the potential project, but Costco still didn't receive a development order from the DRC.
Another set of site plan drawings were filed to Escambia County in March that made slight revisions to the previous proposal. Developers reduced the proposed number of parking spots to 830 and added plans to create bike racks next to the liquor store.
Escambia County received the fourth set of plans on July 14, which is a similar proposal as the previous submission, while the latest set was received in August. After the fourth submission in July, an Escambia County spokesperson told the News Journal that Costco's plans were being held up by state regulatory items at the time.

Apollo Micro Systems emerges as lowest bidder for defence orders worth Rs 25.12 crore
By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on August 21, 2025, 14:27 IST Shares of Apollo Micro Systems Ltd. (AMS) were in focus on Thursday after the company announced that it has emerged as the lowest bidder (L-1) for defence-related orders worth ₹25.12 crore. The Hyderabad-based technology and defence solutions provider said the bids were placed with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other defence public sector undertakings (PSUs). The company clarified in its filing that this order is part of the ordinary course of business, as AMS routinely participates in government and PSU tenders. However, the development has drawn attention as it adds fresh momentum to the company's growing order book and reinforces its positioning in India's expanding defence ecosystem. Meanwhile, shares of Apollo Micro Systems were trading 2.2% higher at ₹207.31 on the NSE, up from the previous close of ₹202.83. The stock has traded between ₹200.55 and ₹211.00 so far today, with a market cap of about ₹69,140 crore. The counter has been active, with trading volumes above 4.6 million shares by mid-session. Founded in 1997, Apollo Micro Systems specialises in designing, developing, and manufacturing electronic and electro-mechanical systems used across defence, aerospace, railways, and homeland security. The government's strong push for Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) in defence manufacturing has created new opportunities for companies like AMS, which have been steadily expanding capabilities in indigenous technologies. I'll be back in Boston tomorrow, but this morning I'm still writing from Nashville. Some readers have asked me why I keep writing about food but haven't mentioned any music while I'm here in Music City. The answer is simply that my son works as an live-audio engineer in several of the venues downtown, and he took this week off, so the last place he wanted to go was somewhere featuring live music — it's like work for him. Instead, we've visited the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, the Uncle Nearest distillery (which I've been writing about), and have eaten hot chicken at Hattie B's. We've also been just chilling. And one of the things my son likes to do is watch a Canadian YouTuber who plays games that are very similar to Wordle. Before I watched, I was aware of just a few games like that, including the guess-the-country game Worldle and the Wordle-on-steroids game Duotrigordle — both of which "NorthernLion" plays on his stream. But there are so many more games. You won't believe it. If you're planning an end-of-August vacation or just looking for some puzzle games, here's a list of new games I've learned about that you can consider. Costcodle — Guess the price of an item at Costco in six tries. Higher Lower — Guess which of two items has more Google searches (it's harder than it sounds). Globle — Like "Worldle," but you guess a mystery country using 'warmer/cooler' guesses on a map. Box Office Game — Guess the top five movies in the US domestic box office for a given weekend. CATfishing — Guess the Wikipedia article from its categories. Framed — Guess a daily movie from six frames/photos. Disorderly — Sort random things like animated movies or celebrity birthdays in order. Angle — Guess the angle in three tries or less. Spellcheck — an audio spelling-bee-style game Raddle — a word-transformation game a word-transformation game Thrice — a guessing game that gives you multiple guesses of a random trivia answer in different categories Food Guessr — Guess the country in which certain food dishes originate Scrandle — Guess which food is more appetizing, as rated by people online. Postscript: Alert reader Nicole wrote to me yesterday in response to my list of irreversible binomials and mentioned a good one — gin and tonic — which was, of course, reversed by Billy Joel in "Piano Man" in the lyric 'There's an old man sittin' next to me / Makin' love to his tonic and gin.' We can call that a 'reversible binomial.'
