Medha Kulkarni
, a
Bhartiya Janta Party
(
BJP
) member and Member of Rajya Sabha from
Maharashtra
, has demanded the renaming of
Pune
Station after Shrimant Thorle
Bajirao Peshwa
, the 7th Peshwa of the Maratha Empire.
Kulkarni strongly criticised Pune's poor railway infrastructure, highlighting the need for urgent improvements to match the city's stature as an educational and IT hub.
While speaking to the media, Kulkarni raised her demands, saying, "There are a few demands regarding the
Pune railway station
... Pune is considered the educational and IT hub. Despite being a city of such importance, the current situation of the station is very miserable; it should be improved."

She also raised the issue of poor connectivity from major cities like Nasik and Badalpur. "
Rajdhani Express
should also be connected through Pune; be it the Delhi to Hyderabad Express or the Bengaluru to Delhi Express, it should go through Pune."
She underlined the need for improved connectivity, especially in the wake of the upcoming
Kumbh Mela
in Nasik. She said, "Cities like Nasik and Badlapur don't have much connectivity, and for the upcoming Kumbh in Nasik, there is no train from Pune to Nasik."
Live Events
The Kumbh Mela, expected to draw millions of pilgrims, increases the urgency for better transport links.
Adding to the broader political trend, Kulkarni called for renaming Pune Station, which aligns with the BJP-led government's ongoing initiative to rename various railway stations and cities across India.
She asked for the Pune station to be renamed and said, "Pune station should be named after Shrimant Thorle Bajirao Peshwa... the one who has fought so many wars and did not lose any. The name of such a great warrior should be for this project."
In recent years, several names of cities and stations have been changed, such as Allahabad, which was changed to Prayagraj, and Mughalsarai station, which was renamed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction.

BJP govt unjust, undemocratic in treatment of marginalised:

Lucknow: Condemning the tonsuring of a 'katha vachak' and his associate allegedly by a group of upper caste men in Etawah, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that the state govt is "unjust, heartless and undemocratic in its treatment of the marginalized". Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Akhilesh demanded that the govt should take strict action against those involved in the incident. Akhilesh also met the 'katha vachak' and his associate and gave them shawls and Rs 21,000 each. "Some people in the state think it is their govt and are acting with impunity. The govt has not tried to send a message that if someone commits such an incident, there will be consequences. All this is happening under the protection of the govt," he said. You Can Also Check: Lucknow AQI | Weather in Lucknow | Bank Holidays in Lucknow | Public Holidays in Lucknow Akhilesh alleged that the BJP was allowing such incidents to happen as it want to gain political favour. "If people in the govt ensure justice, such incidents will not happen. But what is this attitude of the govt? It is heartless, undemocratic and supports every unconstitutional work," he said. Akhilesh said that poor would start getting justice if the govt upheld the Constitution and its preamble. "People in the govt are being unjust. They are dominant and supremacist and are intimidating and humiliating the people from PDA community," he said. "Dominant groups think that the BJP govt is for those who have wielded power for centuries. However, PDA will unite against such forces and give a befitting reply to them. The PDA community is being oppressed by only 2,500 people in the govt," he said. He said that Bhagwat Katha was for everyone, and if everyone could listen, why couldn't everyone speak. "Bhagwat Katha is related to Lord Krishna. If true devotees of Krishna are stopped from Bhagwat Katha, why would anyone tolerate this insult? Supremacist people want to maintain their monopoly over Bhagwat Katha and have turned it into a business," he said. "If you want to have a monopoly – you claim from time to time that you have abolished Article 370 – then bring a law in the country that only you are allowed to be 'katha vachak', and that PDA community is not allowed," he said. Meanwhile, in a post on X, the SP chief said the Constitution did not allow caste discrimination. "This is a crime against the fundamental right to live with dignity and respect," he said.

Ajit Pawar wins directorship of Malegaon sugar mill, counting off to a slow start

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won an easy victory from the seat he was contesting from for the post of directorship of the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill in Baramati. Till 10 pm on Tuesday, besides Ajit Pawar's seat, leads of 12 others of the 21 seats were available with Ajit Pawar's Neelkantheshwar panel leading in 11. A cooperative election veteran and Ajit Pawar's arch rival Chandanrao Taware's Shetkari Sahakar Bachav panel was leading in the other seat. The election for the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill has been the talk of the town — and the state — as Ajit Pawar took on his uncle Sharad Pawar and cousin Supriya Sule. Taware, who has long fought what he calls the 'hegemony of the Pawars' in Baramati, had fielded his panel comprising local farmers. While both the Pawars were on opposite ends of the electoral battle, the Tawares are BJP supporters, which did not deter Ajit Pawar to stand against the Tawares or to declare that he would be the chairman of the mill if he gets elected. Counting for the 21 seats started on Tuesday morning but due to extensive cross-voting between panels, it was off to a slow start. By 10 pm, leads in 13 seats were available. Ajit Pawar won his seat with a thumping majority, which was a foregone conclusion. In the other 12 seats, which included seats reserved for women, OBC and other categories, Ajit Pawar's panel was leading in 11 though by a slender margin. Taware's panel was lead in the other seat. Voting for cooperative bodies are carried out using ballot papers, which are then counted manually. Trends showed over 19,000 voters have voted across panels, which slowed down the counting process. The Sharad Pawar-supported panel, it seems, has not been able to make an impact with the voters with the fight mainly between the Ajit Pawar-led panel and the one led by the Tawares. Going by the trends, Ajit Pawar is expected to win majority of the seats.

Over 10,000 schools are on the verge of closure, he claimed. Pilot clarified that the party supports industry and investment but opposes displacing poor tribal communities from their homes. Addressing the media at Congress state office Rajiv Bhawan in Raipur, Pilot alleged that the BJP government has discontinued 17 schemes launched by the previous Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government, solely to deny credit to the Congress. Pilot announced that Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge and AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal will visit Chhattisgarh on July 7. Kharge will address a public rally at Science College Ground in Raipur, named 'Kisan, Jawan, Samvidhan Jan Sabha' (Farmers, Soldiers, Constitution Public Meeting). Pilot criticised the Sai government for holding fewer Assembly sessions and being evasive in its responses. He alleged that the Sai govt prevents impartial discussions in the House because it has 'much to hide.'
