Ukrainian suspected in the Nord Stream pipeline blasts arrested in Italy, German prosecutors say
BERLIN (AP) — A Ukrainian citizen suspected of participating in the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany has been arrested, German prosecutors said Thursday. The suspect, identified only as Serhii K. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested overnight in Italy's Rimini province, federal prosecutors said. They added that he is believed to be one of the coordinators of the operation. Explosions on Sept. 26, 2022, damaged the pipelines, which were built to carry Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The damage added to tensions over the war in Ukraine as European countries moved to wean themselves off Russian energy sources, following the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia's main natural gas supply route to Germany until Moscow cut off supplies at the end of August 2022. They also damaged the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year. Russia has accused the U.S. of staging the explosions, a charge Washington denies. The pipelines were long a target of criticism by the U.S. and some of its allies, who warned that they posed a risk to Europe's energy security by increasing dependence on Russian gas. In 2023, German media reported that a pro-Ukraine group was involved in the sabotage. Ukraine rejected suggestions it might have ordered the attack and German officials voiced caution over the accusation. Russia's third largest aerial attack on Ukraine this year leaves at least one dead, 15 injured
Russia launched one of its biggest aerial attacks of the year on Ukraine, firing 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said Thursday, while a recent diplomatic push to stop the three-year war is trying to gain momentum. The attack mostly targeted western regions of the country, the air force said, where much of the military aid provided by Ukraine's Western allies is believed to be delivered and stored. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 15 others, according to officials. 8 A firefighter battles a burning building after a Russian air attack in Lviv, Ukraine on Aug. 21, 2025. UKRAINIAN EMERGENCY SERVICE/AFP via Getty Images It was Russia's third largest aerial attack this year in terms of the number of drones fired and the eighth-largest in terms of missiles, according to official figures. Most such Russian attacks have hit civilian areas. The strikes occurred during a renewed US-led effort to reach a peace settlement following Russia's February 2022 invasion of its neighbor. US President Donald Trump discussed the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week, and at the start of this week hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. Ukraine and European leaders have accused Putin of stalling in ongoing peace efforts, including Ukraine's proposal of a ceasefire and Zelensky's offer to sit down with the Russian leader. The Kremlin has reacted coolly to those possibilities. 8 Workers pass by an apartment building struck by a Russian drone strike in Ukraine on Aug. 21, 2025. REUTERS Zelensky condemned the overnight attack, saying it was carried out 'as if nothing were changing at all.' Moscow has shown no signs of pursuing meaningful negotiations to end the war, Zelensky said. He urged the international community to respond with stronger pressure on Moscow, including tougher sanctions and tariffs. Ukraine, meanwhile, has kept up its attacks with domestically produced long-range drones on infrastructure inside Russia that supports Moscow's war effort. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia struck a 'major American electronics manufacturer' in western Ukraine. He provided no further details but Zelensky said the company produces domestic appliances. Western parts of Ukraine are far from the battlefield's front line in the east and south of the country, where a grinding war of attrition has killed tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides. In comments Wednesday that were embargoed until Thursday, Zelensky said Ukraine will hold intensive meetings to understand what kind of security guarantees its allies are willing to provide. 8 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attends a meeting with reporters on Aug. 20, 2025. The plans will become clearer within 10 days, Zelensky said. He then expects to be ready to hold direct talks with Putin for the first time since the full-scale invasion. The talks could also be conducted in a trilateral format alongside Trump, Zelensky said. A venue for the meeting is being discussed, and Switzerland, Austria and Turkey are possibilities, Zelensky added. 8 Firefighters work to extinguish flames inside a destroyed building in the Lviv region on Aug. 21, 2025. via REUTERS 8 Explosions light up the night sky over Kyiv during a Russian airstrike on Aug. 21, 2025. REUTERS Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that working on security arrangements in Ukraine without Moscow's involvement was not feasible, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. Zelensky said that in his meeting with Trump in the Oval Office on Monday he sought to convince the American president that the battlefield situation was not as bad for Ukraine as Putin portrayed. Zelensky pointed to errors in the US map of the front line that he said showed Russia holding more territory than it actually does.
