Exclusive: Emmer confident Senate will pass crypto market structure bill

Axios23-07-2025
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said at an Axios News Shapers event Wednesday that he's confident the Senate will take up a sweeping market structure bill.
Why it matters: Emmer has been one of the most vocal advocates in Congress for the crypto industry and has been pushing the Senate to take up House-passed crypto bills.
"This is a non-partisan issue," Emmer told Axios' Hans Nichols.
Catch up quick: The House passed three major cryptocurrency bills as part of "Crypto Week" earlier this month, including Emmer's Anti- CBDC bill.
The Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday released its own draft version of the crypto market structure bill, the CLARITY Act, that also passed the House this month.
What's next: Emmer said he leaves it up to Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on how the Senate will pass the CLARITY Act, but he sees "no reason" why the bill can't pass on it's own.

Nvidia reiterates its chips have no backdoors, urges US against location verification

BEIJING (Reuters) -Nvidia has published a blog post reiterating that its chips did not have backdoors or kill switches and appealed to U.S. policymakers to forgo such ideas saying it would be a "gift" to hackers and hostile actors. The blog post, which was published on Tuesday in both English and Chinese, comes a week after the Chinese government summoned the U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) chip giant to a meeting saying it was concerned by a U.S. proposal for advanced chips sold abroad to be equipped with tracking and positioning functions. The White House and both houses of U.S. Congress have proposed the idea of requiring U.S. chip firms to include location verification technology with their chips to prevent them from being diverted to countries where U.S. export laws ban sales. The separate bills and White House recommendation have not become a formal rule, and no technical requirements have been established. "Embedding backdoors and kill switches into chips would be a gift to hackers and hostile actors. It would undermine global digital infrastructure and fracture trust in U.S. technology," Nvidia said. It had said last week its products have no backdoors that would allow remote access or control. A backdoor refers to a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Nvidia emphasized that "there is no such thing as a 'good' secret backdoor - only dangerous vulnerabilities that need to be eliminated."

Texas AG will seek to vacate congressional seats of fled Democrats

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday said he will seek to remove Democrats from state Congress who fled the state over the weekend. Pool File Photo by Justin Lane/UPI | License Photo Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday announced he will ask a court to declare the seats of the absent Democratic lawmakers vacant after they fled the Lone Star State in an effort to prevent majority Republicans from adopting controversial congressional maps that critics have derided as a power grab. Legislative Democrats over the weekend left Texas for Democratic-strongholds, such as New York and Illinois, to deny Republicans the minimum number of lawmakers necessary to pass legislation, and to prevent passage of congressional maps, supported by President Donald Trump, that would reportedly lock in five GOP seats to the U.S. House of Representatives in the run up to next year's midterm elections. Critics of the maps have described them as seeking to increase Republican seats in the House through racial gerrymandering that reduces the voting power of people of color in the state. Texas Republicans have, in turn, accused the Democrats of neglecting their responsibilities as state legislators by fleeing. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered their arrest and has threatened to investigate any Democrat who solicits funds to support their effort. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Republican, has given the Democrats until Friday to return to the House. Paxton on Tuesday said he will seek "aggressive legal action" against any who are not present at that time to remove them from office. "Democrats have abandoned their offices by fleeing Texas, and a failure to respond to a call of the House constitutes a dereliction of their duty as elected officials," Paxton said in a statement. "Starting Friday, any rogue lawmakers refusing to return to the House will be held accountable for vacating their office. The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines." Democrats have come out in support of their Texas colleagues, who say they stand together to protect voting rights. In a press conference Tuesday in Illinois, the state's Democratic lieutenant governor, Juliana Stratton, said they were "facing the voting rights fight of our lifetime." "Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are staging a blatant attempt to rig the next election," she said, while accusing them of diverting their attention from those suffering the effects of last month's fatal flooding to "further rigging the system to their own advantage. And there's no line they won't cross." The Democrats broadly described their actions as a bold stand against the Republicans' power grab that targets the voting power of Latino and Black voters. "This is not the Democratic Party of your grandfather, which would bring a pencil the the knife fight," Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin said. "This is a new Democratic Party. We're bringing a knife to a knife fight." Former President Barack Obama even posted to X about the situation, stating: "Republicans in Texas are trying to gerrymander district lines to unfairly win five seats in next year's midterm elections. This is a power grab that undermines our democracy." Abbott also announced Tuesday that he has filed an emergency petition asking the Texas Superior Court to remove Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu over his failure to return to the state's House by the previous Sunday deadline. Wu responded by chastising the governor for seeking to redraw the congressional lines while holding onto disaster relief for the families of the 137 Texans who died in last month's floods. "My purpose has been clear from that start: to serve my constituents and fight for what's right, no matter the cost," Wu said in a statement. "You will find that my commitment to the people of Texas is unbreakable." In a surprising move late Tuesday, Paxton filed his own petition with the Texas Supreme Court, stating that Abbott does not have the authority to file the writ of quo warranto, asserting that responsibility falls to him. He has asked the court not to dismiss the case until Burrows' Friday deadline so he can consider filing a writ of quo warranto of his own.

GOP Rep. Mills accused of threatening to release nude videos of ex-girlfriend

A woman who said she had been in a relationship with Rep. Cory Mills has accused the Republican member of Congress from Florida of threatening to release nude videos of her after she broke off their relationship, according to a police report. Lindsey Langston, a Florida Republican state committee member and 2024 winner of the Miss United States beauty pageant, told authorities on July 14 that Mills also threatened to harm any of her future romantic partners, according to a report she made to the Columbia County Sheriff's Department that was obtained Tuesday by POLITICO. Her allegations were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for review, said Steven Khachigan, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department. The FDLE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mills, who has represented a district south of Daytona Beach since 2023, has not been charged and told POLITICO in a statement that he was unaware of the police report. 'We have not been made aware of any report or allegations from law enforcement or the alleged complainant,' Mills said. 'These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions. I have always conducted myself with integrity, both personally and in service to Florida's 7th District.' The incident was first reported Tuesday by Blaze Media and Drop Site News. Langston told the sheriff's department that she was in a relationship with Mills from November 2021 until February, when she said she ended it after seeing media reports that police in Washington were called to investigate an alleged assault by the representative against a woman. Both Mills and the woman denied that any assault took place, and Mills was not charged in the incident. Langston said that Mills told her he was separated from his wife at the time they started their relationship. The representative is still married. She told police that after she broke up with him, Mills contacted her multiple times threatening to release nude images and videos of them having sex, according to the report, which said she provided law enforcement with messages that allegedly backed up her claims. Anthony Sabatini, Langston's attorney and a Lake County, Florida commissioner who challenged Mills for Congress in 2022, said Langston also filed a restraining order against Mills. POLITICO has not independently confirmed the restraining order. In a statement, Mills told POLITICO he believes Sabatini is 'weaponizing the legal system to launch a political attack.'
