Kaliganj bypoll: How a girl's crude-bomb death tainted Trinamool's victory

India Today6 hours ago

In a tragic turn of events that has once again laid bare the endemic political violence in West Bengal, a minor girl was killed in a crude bomb explosion in Mulundi village near Palashi, under the Kaliganj assembly constituency of Nadia district. The death on June 23 coincided with the declaration of results for the Kaliganj assembly bypoll, which the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) won by a significant margin. The girl, Tamanna Khatun, a Class 4 student, was critically injured in the blast and found lying on the verandah of her home in Barochandgar village—a known stronghold of the Congress-Left alliance. She died shortly after.advertisementLocals alleged that crude bombs had been hurled from a TMC victory procession, purportedly targeting the residence of a CPI(M) supporter. Tamanna, tragically caught in the blast, became the latest casualty in Bengal's long and blood-stained history of post-election violence. The girl's mother directly blamed the TMC, stating: 'They had been hurling bombs since morning. Those who did this are from the TMC. We are CPI(M) supporters. My whole family votes for the CPI(M).'
The incident sparked widespread outrage, with all major Opposition parties accusing chief minister Mamata Banerjee's party of fostering a culture of violence. The CPI(M) was quick to allege political motive, claiming that the victim's family had links to one of its party workers. Mohammad Salim, CPI(M) state secretary, charged: 'Not speeches, not sweets—bombs were thrown in the name of 'victory' in a bypoll! A minor girl was blown to death even before counting ended in Kaliganj. Only in Mamata Banerjee's Bengal can an election celebration look like a terrorist attack!'advertisementThe BJP launched a blistering attack as well. The party's IT wing chief Amit Malviya wrote on social media platform X: 'TMC's celebration ends with blood on its hands. Again. Bombs were hurled during TMC's victory rally in Muslim-majority Kaliganj. A little girl—Tamanna Khatun—was killed. TMC is not a political party; it is a gang of vultures.'Mamata expressed sorrow and promised swift action. 'I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest,' she posted on X.The Krishnanagar police have arrested four prime suspects—identified as Adar Sk, Manowar Sk, Kalu Sk and Anwar Sk. The Election Commission has sought a detailed report on the incident. The BJP's Suvendu Adhikari ironically used the opportunity to highlight what he termed as a 'strategic breakthrough' in Hindu vote consolidation by his party. At a media conference, he presented detailed polling data from Kaliganj to support his claim. According to Adhikari, Kaliganj has approximately 110,000 Hindu voters, of which 66 per cent—or 72,600—cast their votes. The BJP, he said, received 52,710 of these votes, implying the party had secured a remarkable 72.6 per cent of the total Hindu votes polled.advertisementAdhikari noted that out of the 106 Hindu-majority booths in Kaliganj, the BJP had won in 105. In these booths, 60,175 votes were cast, with the BJP receiving 39,213. 'This is surely a beginning. What the Hindus of Kaliganj have done is exceptional. If a similar Hindu consolidation can be engineered in 2026 [assembly polls], TMC candidates can be defeated in at least 220 (of the total 294) seats,' he asserted. The TMC rubbished Adhikari's claims. In multiple statements, the party claimed Hindu voters accounted for 42-44 per cent of Kaliganj's population, which did not take the number to around 110,000. Out of these, if the BJP received 52,710 votes, as claimed, then the TMC had received at least 42,000 to 49,000 of the remaining Hindu votes. That accounted for 40-45 per cent of the Hindu vote-share, which shatters the myth that the BJP had monopolised the Hindu vote in Kaliganj, the TMC said. While the tragedy loomed large, the by-election itself carried strategic significance. The seat, which fell vacant following the death of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, was retained by his daughter Alifa Ahmed. The 38-year-old B.Tech graduate working in a reputed IT firm secured over 91,000 votes, defeating the BJP's Ashish Ghosh, who got 40,146 votes; the Congress's Kabiluddin Shaikh finished third with 26,220 votes.advertisementThe TMC cornered around 55 per cent of the vote-share, the BJP 28 per cent and the Congress 15 per cent. Though a minor improvement for the Congress-Left combine from the assembly polls in 2021, both the alliance and the BJP saw a dip in their vote-shares when compared with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For the TMC, the result was a reaffirmation of its grassroots hold. As Mamata remarked: 'People of all religions, castes, races and walks of life have blessed us immensely. The main architects of this victory are 'Ma-Mati-Manush' (Mother, Soil, People).'Despite the celebratory mood within the ruling party, the death of Tamanna has cast a long, grim shadow over the bypoll. Once again, the electoral process in Bengal has been tainted by violence and civilian casualties. Civil society groups, rights organisations and Opposition leaders have all demanded a thorough and impartial inquiry, calling for accountability at the highest levels. The tragedy also reopens uncomfortable questions about the normalisation of violence in Bengal's political culture, especially during elections. 'It's a very unfortunate incident. We will nab the culprits,' said a senior police officer.advertisementBut for the family of Tamanna, no political promise or electoral statistic can compensate her death. In the charged rhetoric of Hindu vote-banks, minority clusters and booth-level engineering, it is the life of a girl that has become collateral damage—a stark and sorrowful reminder of the cost of Bengal's politics.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- Ends

At House panel meet, questions on why no FIR after cash seizure at judge's residence

From judges attending ideological meetings to the demand for FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma to judges not following code of conduct rules, the Parliamentary Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice discussed a wide range of issues at a meeting on Tuesday. Among the most asked questions by the committee members was why an FIR was not registered against Justice Yashwant Varma after allegations of cash being found at his official residence. Cash was found at the residence of Justice Varma in Delhi when a fire broke out there on March 14. Justice Varma was indicted by the in-house inquiry on May 8. The government has initiated the process for bringing an impeachment motion against Justice Varma during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. It is learnt that a member also suggested that the 1991 judgment in 'K Veeraswami vs Union of India' case should be relooked and if judges are involved in wrongdoings, they should face an FIR. The Department of Justice Secretary is learnt to have told the panel members that he will get back regarding the demand for an FIR against Justice Varma. The issue of Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court against whom Rajya Sabha members have moved an impeachment notice also came up. One member wanted to know what action had been taken against Justice Yadav by the CJI. In December last year, Justice Yadav, a sitting judge of Allahabad High Court, had made questionable remarks on Muslim marriage practices and backed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) while speaking at a VHP event. An impeachment notice was submitted by 54 Rajya Sabha MPs against Justice Yadav. At Tuesday's meeting of the committee chaired by BJP MP Brij Lal, another member was said to have suggested that judges should have a cooling off period of five years after retirement during which they shouldn't be allowed to take up any kind of job or work, or political assignments or contest elections. Another member also suggested an increase in the retirement age of judges and that they should get a better salary and pension. The agenda of Tuesday's meeting was to discuss the code of conduct for judges of higher judiciary. Delhi Confidential: Emergency experiences

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, BJP's preparations for the day were in full swing at the party headquarters on Tuesday. With the party planning to spread out its leaders across the TV channels for attacking the Congress over what it called the 'dark chapter in Indian history', former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who as a student leader was put in jail during the Emergency, has been assigned the task to share his first-hand experiences with the talking heads. The BJP has also planned around 700 seminars and other programmes across the country to make the younger generation know about the Emergency. Request, Relief Food Minister Pralhad Joshi Tuesday thanked Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for extending relief to mango farmers in Karnataka, Joshi's home state. After the prices of mangoes — particularly the Totapuri variety — saw a decline in recent days, the Agriculture Ministry decided to support the Karnataka farmers under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) after Joshi wrote to Chouhan on June 9, urging his intervention. Following the letter, Chouhan held a video conference with Karnataka Agriculture Minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy and announced the relief measures on June 21. ONOE Consultations Having visited Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh earlier this month to hold consultations with stakeholders, the Joint Committee of Parliament on the 'One Nation One Election' Bills is planning its next meeting in Delhi on July 11, it is learnt. The panel, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, is likely to invite two former Chief Justices of India — Jagdish Singh Khehar and D Y Chandrachud — as well as former Law minister Veerappa Moily, to hear their views on the proposed simultaneous elections.

We were merely invitees to Murugan meet: Udhayakumar

Madurai: Senior AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar has reiterated that their party leaders attended the Murugan devotee conference as invited guests, believing it wouldn't be political or politicised. In a video statement on Tuesday, he stated that the conference has nothing to do with AIADMK and doesn't reflect its principles or views. His statement comes after the party faced backlash over a video of Periyar and Anna played during the conference reportedly making disrespectful references to them. Udhayakumar said the DMK is continuously targeting AIADMK leaders and Edappadi K Palaniswami instead of focusing on welfare schemes and projects for the benefit of the people of Tamil Nadu . He said they attended the conference as a gesture of courtesy. "The DMK knows this very well. We didn't even know about the video of Periyar and Anna that was played during the conference as we couldn't see it from where we were seated. We will never give up on our principles, unlike DMK which compromises easily," he said. The AIADMK leader said EPS has taken strong stands against BJP even as an alliance partner, and no disrespect to Anna or Amma will be tolerated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become a Sanomentology Practitioner and Master the World's Most Powerful Method for Change Sanomentology Sign Up Undo "Even in the Cauvery water issue, we stood up for the people of Tamil Nadu. Though he was also invited to the conference, he skipped it owing to other commitments, he told reporters after a party meeting in Salem. "They could have chosen not to criticise anyone in the meeting, which was attended by representatives from all parties," he said. Meanwhile, members of Madurai People's Federation for Religious Harmony submitted a petition on Tuesday to Madurai city police commissioner seeking action against the organisers of the Murugan devotees conference for 'violating' court guidelines. They alleged that some of the speeches by BJP leaders and resolutions were provocative in nature and promoted enmity between religious groups.
