Boland Cavaliers aim to fix set-pieces ahead of Lions challenge in Currie Cup

IOL News3 days ago
Mthokozisi Gumede can add some power to the Boland Cavaliers' scrum against the Lions.
The Boland Cavaliers' return to the Currie Cup has been anything but boring.
Their first match back in the Premier Division since 2019 ended with a dramatic win against the Cheetahs, after they went the length of the field after the hooter to eventually score in the 88th minute.
Last weekend's clash against Griquas in Kimberley saw them involved in another high-scoring thriller, but this time they were outgunned by the hosts, who laid the platform for their victory with top set-piece dominance.
Boland's scrum, particularly on the opposition's ball, has been a concern in both. They have conceded a plethora of penalties at scrum time, and have had to rely on their dangerous backs to keep them competitive.
This weekend, they face a home clash against a strong Lions outfit that will again test them at scrum time. The Lions have been one of the form teams in the competition, having made light work of the Sharks and Western Province in their opening two matches.

Pumas overpower Bulls in impressive six-try Currie Cup victory

Pumas scrumhalf Ross Braude dominated proceedings on the attack as his side scored six tries to complete a comprehensive victory over the Bulls in Pretoria. Image: BackpagePix After dominant victories in their first two Currie Cup matches, the Bulls were brought back down to earth by the experienced Pumas in their clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. The visitors bullied their hosts in contact, dominated the scrums, and showed superiority with their driving mauls and counter-mauls to claim a bonus-point 41-7 win in Pretoria. With the six-try victory, the Jimmy Stonehouse-coached outfit leapfrogged the Lions and Bulls into the lead on the official log, with the Johannesburg side still to play against the Boland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon. Next Stay Close ✕ The Pumas showed why they are one of the favourites in the competition, despite a hiccup last weekend, and their experience paved the way for the victory. Stonehouse will be happy with how his side responded, especially away from home, following the loss to the Cheetahs. While the first half was a grinding affair as both sides looked to get on top, they would've been frustrated with the errors that crept in and saw them changing sides with the score only at 10-7 in favour of the eventual winners. The Bulls were first to score a try after an opening penalty from the visitors. That converted try remained the sole points for the home side. They coughed up plenty of opportunities after good plays, and it looked as if they were going to put up a strong fight. The hosts had the visitors under pressure with their ball-in-hand play for a good part of the first half. However, the experience of the Pumas enabled them to weather the initial storm to claim the upper hand in almost all facets of the game in the final 10 minutes before halftime.

Currie Cup result: Impressive Pumas burst Bulls' bubble

The Pumas will host the Lions next Saturday, with the Bulls battling Boland in Wellington on Sunday. The Pumas scored six tries at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday to end the Vodacom Bulls' winning start to the Currie Cup. The hosts were heavy favourites after big wins against Western Province and the Sharks, while the Pumas had lost to the Cheetahs last weekend. But it soon became apparent that Jimmy Stonehouse's men had come to play, growing in confidence as the game progressed to triumph 41-7 and move to the top of the log. After a tight, scoreless opening quarter, Pumas flyhalf Danrich Visagie broke the deadlock with a penalty. Bulls wing Riyaad Bam – a late replacement for Aphiwe Dyantyi – marked his debut with a try after excellent work from Katlego Letebele, but the visitors regained the lead just before half time when hooker Eduan Swart burst away from the back of a lineout maul. Captain Willie Engelbrecht charged over early in the second half, and when scrumhalf Ross Braude regathered his chip kick to put lock Tiaan de Klerk away, the Pumas led 22-7. Braude scored from a quick tap to secure the bonus point, before replacements Hanno Theunissen and Andre Fouche crossed late in the game to cap off an impressive Pumas performance. The Pumas will host the Lions next Saturday, with the Bulls battling Boland in Wellington on Sunday. BULLS – Try: Riyaad Bam. Conversion: Boeta Chamberlain. PUMAS – Tries: Eduan Swart, Willie Engelbrecht, Tiaan de Klerk, Ross Braude, Hanno Theunissen, Andre Fouche. Conversions: Danrich Visagie (4). Penalty: Visagie. Wallabies' Max Jorgensen pumped to face ‘bloody good' Springboks

The 20-year-old utility back Max Jorgensen made his Test debut against South Africa in Perth during last year's Rugby Championship. Now, coach Joe Schmidt is set to unleash his raw pace and composure in back-to-back clashes against the world champions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. 'All the boys are pretty pumped after our last win against the [British & Irish] Lions, we've built a bit of confidence there,' Jorgensen said ahead of the team's departure for South Africa. ALSO: Boks brace for 'psyched-up' Wallabies 'But South Africa are a bloody good team so we've got to really take it to them, bring the physicality and hopefully come out with a win.' Jorgensen warned against reading too much into that morale-boosting victory over the Lions. 'We've got to stick to the process. We've got to keep building the days. We're still building, we're still a work in progress – we're not perfect. We've got to take the learnings from our last game and keep building into that, building into South Africa and all through the Rugby Championship.' For Jorgensen, the Boks represent the ultimate test. 'It's who you want to play against,' he said. 'You don't want to play against the lower tier nations. You really want to play against those high tier nations with strong players, strong teams because it really challenges you as a team and as a player personally.'
