Anwar urges UMS not to expel students in Anti-Graft rally
Zambry stated that Anwar's directive was relayed to UMS to ensure disciplinary measures do not disrupt the students' academic progress. 'The Prime Minister called me earlier, emphasising that while mistakes may have been made, their education must not be compromised,' he said.
Speaking after the 'In Person With Doc Zam' programme at UMS, Zambry highlighted Anwar's compassionate stance, noting that despite being the rally's primary target, the Prime Minister prioritised the students' future.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that participants are under investigation for nine offences, including incitement and open burning. The June 21 rally, organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, saw protesters carrying anti-corruption placards and burning an Anwar caricature.
UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor previously warned that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), including suspension or expulsion. Zambry reiterated that while freedom of assembly is constitutional, it must align with public safety laws.
The Higher Education Ministry has left the final decision to UMS, which will proceed under existing regulations.

PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno is at its weakest point in its history and faces a critical juncture in the upcoming 17th state election, says a political analyst. Bilcher Bala of Universiti Malaysia Sabah pointed to the statement by the state chapter's information chief, Suhaimi Nasir, that the state polls would determine whether Sabah Umno 'lives or dies'. Bilcher said that since losing dominance after the 2018 general election and exiting the state government two years ago, Sabah Umno has lost more than 2,000 grassroot leaders, leaving it at its weakest position to date. 'This state election isn't a normal political contest. It's set to test the people's belief in Umno's ability to regain its past prominence. 'Sabah used to be an Umno stronghold, and losing this state election would mean losing further political ground, which will be tough to recover ahead of the 16th general election (GE16),' he told FMT. On Friday, Suhaimi said the state election would be a 'life or death' battle for Sabah Umno as it would determine how the contests for parliamentary seats in GE16 play out. While the party currently holds seven of the 30 parliamentary seats in Sabah, the Libaran MP said forming the state government would enable Umno to win at least five more parliamentary seats in GE16. However, Bilcher said Suhaimi's 'life or death' remark could also be interpreted as aiming to stir the emotions of Sabah Umno's grassroots to unite the machinery and mobilise support. 'The reality is much more complex. The results of the polls will depend on the candidates, local issues, and the dynamic cooperation of political parties,' he said. On the other hand, Universiti Teknologi Mara's Tony Paridi Bagang believes that Umno would not face its end in Sabah so easily, given its long history in the state. He said the upcoming state election was more of a test of whether the party can return to dominance or not. 'While Sabah Barisan Nasional has reasons to be confident, it cannot be so sure because Sabah politics is so fluid,' he said. Tony said that even if Sabah Umno fails to form the next state government, it could still serve as a constructive opposition party to regain the people's confidence. 'As a national party that has been in the seat of government for nearly 61 years, Umno is experienced enough to record a comeback if it loses this state election,' he said.

The Prime Minister said these were recovered from ministries, government agencies and politicians. 'There are taunts and cynicism towards the government's hard stance on fighting corruption. 'But over the past year, we have recovered RM4bil to RM5bil in assets and funds seized from corruption cases across ministries, departments, Immigration, Customs and even politicians. 'This is due to our competence and willingness to take action (against corruption). 'This is also only possible with good governance,' he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the RM6.26bil Ipoh Sentral project. While giving assurance that no individual will be allowed to escape accountability, the Prime Minister said the case, however, should not resort to insulting specific individuals. 'The police are investigating (the matter), and I have made it clear that it doesn't matter who (is involved); they will be investigated,' he said when launching the Madani Dairy Entrepreneurs Carnival yesterday, Bernama reported. The Prime Minister said the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians and commitment to corporate social responsibility. Anwar also pointed out that Malaysia's close ties with its regional partners, especially within Asean, have opened up broad opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including agriculture and dairy. He noted that this sector's success is also supported by the readiness of the private sector, the resilience of local entrepreneurs, and the integration of modern technology, including artificial intelligence.
