7 kanwarias booked for assaulting CRPF jawan returning to duty in Manipur

Indian Express5 days ago
Seven kanwarias, including four minors, were booked for allegedly assaulting a 50-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan at Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur railway station on Saturday morning.
The incident came to light after a video emerged on social media purportedly showing the accused assaulting the jawan, who police only identified by his first name, Gautam.
According to the police, Gautam had come home on leave and was at the station to board the Brahmaputra Express for Manipur, where he is currently posted. He was with his minor son, based on whose complaint the FIR against the accused was filed.
The brief video shows a push-and-pull between the men and Gautam, who eventually falls to the ground as the men rain kicks and punches on him. A minor boy helps him up, and he walks up to the men to confront them, but is assaulted again.
Police said they are yet to ascertain what led to the incident. According to officials, police personnel reached the spot on receiving the information and brought the situation under control with the help of a few passengers.
Gautam's son filed a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), based on which three adults and four minors were booked under sections of the Railways Act and for voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
RPF inspector Chaman Singh Tomar, in charge of the Mirzapur railway station, said the accused have been released on a personal bond.
The accused, who were scheduled to travel on the same train as Gautam, claimed before police that Gautam was intoxicated and abused them, which provoked the assault. 'This claim could not be verified as Gautam boarded the train immediately and left without undergoing a medical examination,' said Tomar.
Later, Mirzapur GRP inspector Raghvendra Bahadur Singh reiterated that the accused were booked and released on a personal bond as the offence is non-cognizable.
Police have reviewed CCTV from the station and concluded that no one else was involved.

Food Thief On Moving Train: Passenger Steals From Vendor's Cart, Faces Heat Online

Last Updated: The co-passengers did not object to his act and were seen laughing at his petty theft. What might have started as a mere prank for entertainment quickly turned into petty theft aboard a crowded train. A video has been going viral on social media, which shows a shocking scene of a passenger stealing from the vendors. While he might have thought that his antics were hilarious, the Internet is far from being amused. The clip begins with vendors trying to make their way through the narrow passage between the seats as they balance huge bags of goods on top of their heads. The young man, who was sitting on the upper berth, called one of them and looked through his bag, acting as if he wanted to buy something from the vendor. When he showed no interest and the vendor was about to walk away from that place, he sneakily took a packet of juice from the bag, without paying. His expression showed no signs of hesitation or guilt. He was clearly pleased with his petty theft. And he did not just limit himself to stealing one item. As vendors passed through the corridor one after another, he kept stealing food items, including samosas, a water bottle, and other fried snacks. He thinks stealing from poor vendors is "comedy". This guy needs to be detained. — Tarun Gautam (@TARUNspeakss) July 19, 2025 Internet Is Furious Over The Man's Actions As seen in the video, his co-passengers found his act amusing. They laughed at his inexcusable actions instead of discouraging him from doing so or even informing the poor vendors about what was happening. What was clearly theft was treated like an entertainment show for the other passengers. The viral video was shared on X with the caption: 'He thinks stealing from poor vendors is 'comedy'. This guy needs to be detained." Unlike his co-passengers, the Internet was furious about the man's act. Many expressed their anger and disappointment over this incident, with some even calling for strict punishments. One person said, 'It is not about his problem; it's about the people sitting beside them, and no one is saying anything. And everyone is taking fun of it!!!" Another added, 'Stealing from the poor and calling it content? That's not a prank, that's a crime. Lock him up." 'I'll never get why Indians think bending the rules is a genius move," said a different user. A user also tagged Railway Police and asked for punishment, saying, '@RPF_INDIA identify and fine him for this misdemeanour crime. People cannot be allowed to get away with stealing from others like this. Where is rule of law?" Since the video was posted on social media, it has garnered over a million views. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 09:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Take stern measures to check drug abuse, sales

Puttaparthi: To tackle the growing menace of drug abuse, illegal sales, and trafficking, Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T S Chetan has directed the officials concerned to implement stringent measures. He emphasised the need for coordinated efforts during a review meeting held on Wednesday at the Mini Conference Hall in the District Collectorate. The meeting was convened to discuss strategies for controlling the use and illegal transport of narcotic substances. It was attended by District SP Ratna and Joint Collector Abhishek Kumar, among other senior officials. Addressing the officials, Collector Chetan stated that strict surveillance must be implemented to curb the source and transportation of drugs in the district. He pointed out that drug suppliers often target vulnerable groups such as students, auto drivers, and labourers, and emphasised the need for close monitoring in areas prone to such illegal activities. He announced that the government has launched the EAGLE initiative to combat drug trafficking across the district. Under the PIT NDPS Act, 1988, repeat offenders involved in ganja-related crimes will be detained, and properties amassed through drug trade will be seized through financial investigation. Collector Chetan also warned that the sale of tobacco products within a 100-metre radius of educational institutions is strictly prohibited. Violators will face action under the COTPA Act. He directed education officials and vocational officers to establish EAGLE Clubs in all educational institutions at the earliest. Furthermore, he instructed the GRP, RPF, local police, and EAGLE cell members to conduct joint operations in trains to ensure public safety. Stressing public cooperation, he urged people to stay away from the 'drug menace' that could destroy lives. He reiterated the government's slogan 'Say No to Drugs, Bro'. To facilitate reporting of drug-related activities, the EAGLE toll-free number 1972 is now active. The identities of informants will be kept confidential. He also directed NGOs to organise awareness sessions in schools and colleges about the harmful effects of substance abuse. Medical shops must not sell NRX tablets without a doctor's prescription, and abandoned buildings on the outskirts of towns must be identified and placed under surveillance. Speaking on the occasion, District SP Ratna highlighted that the police have intensified actions to curb drug consumption and trafficking. Special surveillance operations were being carried out by EAGLE teams. He emphasised enhanced supervision in both government and private hostels to prevent drug use. Instructions have been issued to display anti-drug awareness posters and boards in schools, colleges, hostels, roadside dhabas, and particularly in engineering and medical colleges. The meeting was attended by Joint Collector Abhishek Kumar, Dharmavaram RDO Mahesh, district panchayat officer Samatha, ICDS PD Sridevi, police officials, EAGLE Cell RSI K Srihari, and others.
