Tesla recalls all Cybertrucks after using wrong glue to stick on steel panels

Yahoo21-03-2025

Tesla has been forced to recall every Cybertruck it has ever sold after safety regulators raised an issue with the glue used to attach one of its stainless steel panels.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will oversee the recall of 46,100 Cybertrucks, marking the eighth recall for Tesla's electric pickup truck since deliveries to customers began just over a year ago.
A report from the NHTSA warned that an exterior panel that runs along the left and right side of the windscreen can detach while driving, creating a hazard for other drivers.
The stainless steel strip, called a cant rail assembly, between the windscreen and the roof on both sides, is bound to the truck's assembly with a structural adhesive.
The remedy uses an adhesive which has not been found to be vulnerable to "environmental embrittlement", the NHTSA said, and includes additional reinforcements.
Tesla will replace the panel free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be sent out on 19 May.
The recall of 46,096 Cybertrucks covers all 2024 and 2025 model years, manufactured from November 13 2023 to February 27 2025.
The NHTSA order said Tesla became aware of the problem early this year.
Videos showing people ripping the panels off Cybertrucks with their hands have gone viral on social media in recent days.
The Cybertruck, which Tesla began delivering to buyers in late 2023, has been recalled eight times in the past 15 months for safety problems, including once in November because a fault in an electric inverter could cause the drive wheels to lose power.
Last April, the futuristic-looking trucks were recalled to fix acceleration pedals that could get stuck in the interior trim.
Other recalls were related to windscreen wipers and the display screen.
It is the latest setback for the Elon Musk-owned electric car maker which has come under attack since President Donald Trump took office and empowered Mr Musk to oversee a new Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) which is slashing government spending.
While no injuries have been reported, Tesla showrooms, charging stations and privately owned cars have been targeted.
This week, organisers of the 'Tesla Takedown' movement announced their biggest day of action, targeting 500 locations on 29 March.
'Take action at Tesla showrooms everywhere,' the organisers said. 'Sell your Teslas, dump your stock, join the picket lines... Stopping Musk will help save lives and our democracy.'
Trump has threatened anyone caught vandalising Tesla vehicles, showrooms or charging stations with up to 20 years in prison.
In a post to Truth Social on Thursday, the US President wrote: 'People that get caught sabotaging Teslas will stand a very good chance of going to jail for up to twenty years, and that includes the funders.'

Top AI Researchers Meet to Discuss What Comes After Humanity

A group of the top minds in AI gathered over the weekend to discuss the "posthuman transition" — a mind-bending exercise in imagining a future in which humanity willfully hands over power, or perhaps bequeaths existence entirely, to some sort of superhuman intelligence. As Wired reports, the lavish party was organized by generative AI entrepreneur Daniel Faggella. Attendees included "AI founders from $100 million to $5 billion valuations" and "most of the important philosophical thinkers on AGI," Faggella enthused in a LinkedIn post. He organized the soirée at a $30 million mansion in San Francisco because the "big labs, the people that know that AGI is likely to end humanity, don't talk about it because the incentives don't permit it," Faggella told Wired. The symposium allowed attendees and speakers alike to steep themselves in a largely fantastical vision of a future where artificial general intelligence (AGI) was a given, rather than some distant dream of tech that isn't even close to existing. AI companies, most notably OpenAI, have talked at length about wanting to realize AGI, though often without clearly defining the term. The risks of racing toward a superhuman intelligence have remained hotly debated, with billionaire Elon Musk once arguing that unregulated AI could be the "biggest risk we face as a civilization." OpenAI Sam Altman has also warned of dangers facing humanity, including increased inequality and population control through mass surveillance, as a result of realizing AGI — which also happens to be his firm's number one priority. But for now, those are largely moot points made by individuals who are billions of dollars deep in reassuring investors that AGI is mere years away. Given the current state of wildly hallucinating large language models that still fail at the most basic tasks, we are seemingly still a long way from a point at which AI could surpass the intellectual capabilities of humans. Just last week, researchers at Apple released a damning paper that threw cold water on the "reasoning" capabilities of the latest and most powerful LLMs, arguing they "face a complete accuracy collapse beyond certain complexities." However, to insiders and believers in the tech, AGI is mostly a matter of when, not if. Speakers at this weekend's event talked about how AI can seek out deeper, universal values that humanity hasn't even been privy to, and that machines should be taught to pursue "the good," or risk enslaving an entity capable of suffering. As Wired reports, Faggella similarly invoked philosophers including Baruch Spinoza and Friedrich Nietzsche, calling on humanity to seek out the yet-undiscovered value in the universe. "This is an advocacy group for the slowing down of AI progress, if anything, to make sure we're going in the right direction," he told the publication. Is there a rocket launch today? Upcoming liftoff schedule from Vandenberg in California

The first half of June saw three SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets soaring over Southern California to deliver Starlink satellites into orbit – and more are likely on the way. In fact, the next Starlink deployment could get off the ground as early as Monday, June 16 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County. If you miss it, don't stress: Californians should likely still have multiple chances to catch a rocket launch in June. SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, could launch a rideshare mission later in June to deliver dozens of small satellites for paying customers, as well as a government satellite-deploying mission. Vandenberg and SpaceX don't typically officially confirm California launches until about a day ahead of time, and the Federal Aviation Administration's operations plan advisory is constantly updating. Still, multiple online websites that track launches suggest that at least another three are so far being targeted for the rest of June from California – likely with more to be added to the schedule throughout the month. It's also important to keep in mind that rocket launches can be – and often are – delayed due to any number of factors, including poor weather conditions or unexpected issues with spacecraft. Make sure to visit VC Star for the latest mission updates. Here's a look at the upcoming June 2025 launch schedule (so far) at Vandenberg Space Force Base.
