Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown sought on attempted murder charge
MIAMI – Authorities in Miami-Dade County are seeking to arrest former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder stemming from a shooting at a celebrity boxing event in May, according to a warrant reviewed by The Washington Post.

The warrant, which was signed by a judge Wednesday, lists a charge of attempted murder with a firearm and calls for Brown to post a $10,000 bond and remain under house arrest pending trial. Efforts to reach Brown, 36, were unsuccessful Thursday evening; it was unclear whether he was represented by an attorney. A spokesman for the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office declined to comment.

This marks the latest legal entanglement for the talented but mercurial wide receiver who last played in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

The criminal charge stems from an incident outside a boxing event in the Little Haiti neighbourhood of Miami, after which Brown was detained by police and released hours later.

According to the warrant, officers responded to a report of gunshots being fired outside of the venue shortly before midnight May 16. When they arrived, an off-duty officer working security at the event said he left the venue after being told of the sound of gunfire, according to the warrant, and said he then observed Brown involved in a physical altercation with another man.

Patrons in the parking lot told officers that Brown was the shooter, according to the warrant, which also states that Brown had no weapon on him when officers patted him down. Investigators found two spent shell casings and an empty gun holster, according to the warrant.

Brown, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, was released later that night and later took to social media to say he had been 'jumped' by people trying to steal his jewelry.

According to the warrant, Miami police detectives later obtained video footage that appears to show Brown punching another man, sparking a melee, and the footage later shows Brown appearing to take the gun of a security officer and running toward the man he had punched. According to the warrant, cellphone video captures two gun shots as Brown approaches the victim and includes the victim ducking.

On May 21, according to the warrant, detectives met with the alleged victim, who told them that after the initial fight had been broken up, Brown 'began to run toward him with a firearm' and shot at him twice, possibly grazing his neck. The two struggled over the gun before police arrived and Brown walked away, the warrant said. The man left and went to Aventura Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The man identified Brown on the surveillance footage and said he has known him since 2022, according to the warrant.

Brown, 36, is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told investigators one of the bullets grazed his neck. The warrant does not list an attorney for Brown, an All-Pro wide receiver who last played in the NFL in 2021 for Tampa Bay but spent most of his 12-year career with Pittsburgh. Brown did not respond to messages sent to his social media accounts. The second-degree attempted murder charge carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. It is the latest in a series of legal problems for Brown, who has previously been accused of battery of a moving truck driver, several domestic violence charges, failure to pay child support and other incidents. During a 2021 game with Tampa Bay against the New York Jets, Brown took off his jersey, shoulder pads and gloves and ran off the field, leading to his release by the Buccaneers. After that incident, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady said people should show some compassion for Brown, who lived at Brady's home during his time in Tampa Bay. 'It's a difficult situation,' Brady said then. 'Everybody should do what they can to help him in ways that he really needs it. We all love him. We care about him deeply. We want to see him be at his best. Unfortunately, it won't be with our team.' According to the arrest warrant, Brown attended a celebrity boxing event in Miami on May 16. Police were called to the location after other patrons reported hearing shots fired. Several of them told officers Brown was the shooter, but when he was detained in the parking lot no weapon was found, but two bullet casings were located. Brown was released then because the victim was not found immediately, according to the warrant. Later, investigators learned Nantambu was the victim. Based on surveillance video, the altercation outside the boxing event involving Brown, Nantambu and others was broken up by security staff, one of whom got into a struggle with Brown, the warrant says. 'Mr. Brown appears to retrieve a black firearm from the right hip area' of the security official, the warrant says. 'Cellphone video obtained from social media showed Mr. Brown with the firearm in his hand advancing toward Mr. Nantambu on the outside sidewalk. The video captures two shots which occur as Mr. Brown is within several feet of Mr. Nantambu.' Nantambu identified Brown as the shooter and told investigators he had known Brown since 2022. In a social media post after the altercation, Brown said he was 'jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.' During his playing career, Brown caught 928 passes for 12,291 yards and 88 touchdowns. Shark attacks 9-year-old girl snorkelling off Florida beach

(WFOR via CNN Newsource) BOCA GRANDE, Fla. — A 9-year-old girl was attacked by a shark while snorkelling off a Florida beach on Wednesday. It happened off Boca Grande on the state's southwest coast. The girl's family said she was underwater when she suddenly surfaced screaming, her right hand covered in blood. They said it was barely attached to her arm. Workers rush in to help Alfonso Tello and his fellow construction workers were on a break when they heard the screams. He said they jumped in the water to help the girl, not knowing that she had been attacked by a shark. He said the image of the girl's arm is something he can't get out of his head. 'I was thinking that they were playing around, but when we heard the scream like 'help, help' we saw the little girl crying. So when we see that little girl come out from the water with no hand, it was like something out like gets me, gets me, like everybody was in shock,' he said. 'We heard somebody screaming, help, help, help. And then we jump on and see what's going on. And I saw it was like five kids on the water, mom and dad on the water. I saw a shark right on top of the lady, little kid. So we jump on the water, we pull him off, and the shark was right behind us, and it was pretty bad,' Raynel Lugo said. Heartbreaking for those helped Lugo said after they got the girl to shore, they tried to help her until paramedics arrived. 'The hand, it was just hanging by this piece of the hands. The whole thing was completely hanging out. You can see bones all completely red. So we stopped bleeding. We tried to stop it. She put a towel on it and hold it into that place. So I sit down with her, and I was talking to the EMS arrived,' he said. 'Nine years old. I have a daughter, 9-years-old, same age. She was brave,' he added. Witnesses said it was a bull shark that attacked the girl, but officials have not confirmed that. 'It was a big shark, like eight feet. I would say like eight feet,' Tello said. Some swimmers at the beach said this is why they stay close to shore. 'You have to be careful, keep an eye out. How sad, that is very sad and I feel so bad for her,' Pamela Krout said. Shark attacks in Florida Last year, there were 28 confirmed shark bites in U.S. waters, accounting for 60 per cent of the worldwide attacks. Half of U.S. attacks took place in Florida in 2024, which is also common for the state often known to experience the highest concentrations of shark bites of anywhere in the world. Shaquille O'Neal to pay US$1.8 million to settle FTX class action lawsuit
Former NBA player Shaquille O'Neal will pay US$1.8 million to settle a class action lawsuit related to the demise of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. O'Neal, and other celebrities like Tom Brady and Stephen Curry, were named in the lawsuit in 2022. They had been accused of touting FTX as a reputable and trustworthy investment option via paid endorsements. The proposed settlement only pertains to O'Neal. Three years ago FTX was the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange, but it ended up with billions of dollars worth of losses and had to seek bankruptcy protection. The Bahamas-based company and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, came under investigation by state and federal authorities for allegedly investing depositors funds in ventures without their approval. Before its failure, FTX was known to use high-profile Hollywood and sports celebrities to promote its products. It had the naming rights to a Formula One racing team as well as a sports arena in Miami. Its commercials featured 'Seinfeld' creator Larry David, as well as Brady, the former quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, basketball players O'Neal and Curry, and tennis star Naomi Osaka. Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024. A little more than a month after that, FTX said in a court filing that nearly all of its customers would receive the money back that they were owed. While the proposed settlement with O'Neal had been agreed to in April, the payment amount and other terms were disclosed in a filing with the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, Miami Division, earlier this week. The settlement class includes anyone who deposited funds into FTX or bought its FTT token between May 2019 and late 2022. The agreement, which still needs court approval, would provide O'Neal with a broad release from future claims and also includes a stipulation that he can't seek reimbursement from the FTX estate.
