Maharashtra govt. seeks land on JNU campus to build Shivaji statue
'We have held preliminary talks with the Vice-Chancellor and she is positive about it. A statue of our most revered king in this renowned university will help spread the importance of his valour and Maratha history on a national platform, given the university's key position in the academic world. Once the land is allotted, the State government will construct the statue. There is in-principle approval for the State government's proposal,' Mr. Samant said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and State Cabinet Ministers will visit JNU on Thursday to inaugurate the Kusumagraj Special Centre for Marathi Language, Literature, and Culture, named after the celebrated poet and Jnanpith awardee. The centre will offer postgraduate and certificate programmes aimed at promoting multilingualism and cultural understanding.
'It will offer an MA in Marathi and certificate courses aligned with the National Education Policy, 2020 for non-Marathi speakers, such as those who speak Tamil. Notably, many students from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have opted for Tamil, and it's common to hear Tamil being spoken during our functions. This trend is encouraging as it promotes unity and sensitivity towards other languages across the country. The State government is emphasising Marathi's importance, especially since it has been recognised as a classical language by the Centre. It is a language known for its rich literary heritage,' JNU V-C Santishree Pandit had told reporters recently.
Mr. Fadnavis will also lay the foundation stone for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, which will function under JNU's School of International Studies. The centre will focus on exploring indigenous strategic traditions based on the Maratha empire and aims to become a hub of military history, strategy, and future policy development rooted in India's past.
₹10 crore allocated
The State government has allocated ₹10 crore each for both centres .The Marathi centre was announced in 2007 by then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The spirit of bakthi hung in the air and Prime Minister Narendra Modi soaked in the spiritual experience during his more than two-hour visit to the Brihadisvara temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram on Sunday. Sporting a traditional Tamil attire of white dhoti (veshti) and half-sleeve shirt with an angavastram (upper cloth), Mr. Modi offered prayers at the Shiva temple built by Rajendra Chola I, which is famous for its imposing architecture and exquisite sculptures. He was received with poorna kumbam honours. He performed aarathi to the presiding deity. Devotional renderings by maestro Ilaiyaraaja and a group of Odhuvars were held. The Odhuvars rendered the Thevaram hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, Thodudaiya Seviyan, Pithaa Piraisoodi Perumaney, and Muthaitharu Pathith Thirunagai from the Thirupugazh in praise of Lord Murugan. This was followed by the performance of the troupe led by Mr. Ilaiyaraaja. Singer Madhu Balakrishnan rendered the Om Sivahom. The maestro with his mesmerising voice rendered the Namah Shivaya Vaazhga Naadhanthaal Vaazhga and Poovar Senni Mannan of Saint Manickavasagar. The performances drew standing ovations from the Prime Minister. Moved by the spiritual atmosphere, Mr. Modi acknowledged it while speaking at the valedictory of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at the temple complex. Greeting the audience with 'Vanakkam Cholamandalam' (salutations to the Chola region), Mr. Modi appreciated the performances of Mr. Ilaiyaraaja and the Odhuvars. He handed over a pot of Ganga water from Kasi to the Sivachariars at the temple. The celebration of Ganga in the land of the Cauvery is also a legacy of the Chola Empire, he observed, and expressed happiness that he had once again brought Ganga water to Tamil Nadu. He viewed a thematic photo exhibition on 'Saiva Siddhanta and Chola Temple Arts', put up by the Union Ministry of Culture. Impressed by the achievements of the Cholas, he urged the people to visit the exhibition without fail. Mr. Modi released a Tamil musical album on Bhagavad Gita brought out by Chinmaya Mission and a publication on Thevaram brought out by Sahitya Akademi. He also held a roadshow on the way to the temple.

Condemn efforts to ‘saffronize' education sector in Kerala, says minister V Sivankutty
T'puram: General education minister V Sivankutty said that the state govt strongly condemns efforts to saffronize the education sector under the guise of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP). He was responding to concerns raised in connection with the 'Jnanasabha' event held in Ernakulam on Sunday. "Attempts to bring the education sector under the influence of any particular ideology or political agenda cannot be accepted under any circumstances. Education should be accessible and secular for everyone. However, it is concerning that some organizations are trying to distort educational policies to suit their interests," the minister said. "It is particularly worrying that the vice-chancellors of five universities in the state are participating in an event led by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Universities should be independent and impartial. Using institutions for political interests will have far-reaching consequences," Sivankutty added. The state govt is committed to protecting Kerala's public and higher education sectors, Sivankutty said. The govt's goal is to ensure an education system that aligns with the fundamental principles of the Constitution and democratic values. The public in Kerala will take all necessary steps to counter attempts at saffronization and uphold the secular nature of the education sector, he added.

University officials, including vice-chancellors, were among those who attended the event.
