Harmeet Desai eyes 2026 Asian Games, begins preparations with UTT
Desai, currently ranked 66th in the world, bagged gold medals in men's team event at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He also has a bronze medal in men's doubles at Gold Coast and a bronze at the men's team event in 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
"I don't like to predict so much. I am just taking it step by step, at the moment I am just focussing on UTT," Desai, who will be turning out for two-time champions Goa Challengers in the eight-team UTT, told PTI.
"Definitely more important tournaments are coming. Next is Slovenia WTT tournament, Asian Games is also lined up next year so my focus is on to that as of now.
"The UTT is a great platform to start my preparations for the Asian Games as many world champions, Asian champions and Olympians are participating in the event," he added.
Goa Challengers are two-time defending champions, having won the title in 2023 and 2024 and are eyeing a hat-trick of crowns.
He feels the league has changed the face of the sport in India. It began in 2017 but because of COVID two seasons didn't happen.
"If you see the graph of Indian table tennis it has risen a lot. We used to be ranked around No.30 in the world but now we came up to top-10 in the recent past," Desai said.
"In the last Olympics both the teams qualified for the very first time. We have been winning medals at the Asian Championships, Commonwealth Games. So many players have entered into top-100 in world rankings.
"The juniors have been really doing well. Senior women team got into top-25 in the world rankings. These kind of things never happened before, so all credit goes to UTT because it gave us exposure to learn from foreign players, foreign coaches," he added.
Desai, who is from Surat, is excited to play in his home state, which is hosting the tournament for the first time.
"It's first UTT season in Gujarat, my home state, so I am really excited to perform before home fans. So it's a big opportunity to inspire youngsters who are taking table tennis as a future prospect.
"It will great platform youngsters of Gujarat to watch international players, including 32 Olympians," he noted.
The sixth season of UTT will be held at the EKA Arena here from May 31 till June 15.

Dehradun to host India's 1st Asian Open Skating Championship
Dehradun: Dehradun is set to host the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Championship for the first time in India next week, with the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) organising the four-day event from Wednesday to Saturday at the Himadri Ice Skating Rink, the country's only Olympic-standard facility. Athletes from 10 Asian nations, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Indonesia, will compete in the championship. ISAI president Amitabh Sharma said on Saturday that 240 skaters and officials will take part. "The event will feature 18 skaters from China, 13 from Japan, 27 from Hong Kong, 11 from Indonesia, 25 from Thailand, 19 from Chinese Taipei, 16 from Vietnam, eight from Malaysia, five from Singapore, and two from the Philippines. India will field the largest contingent, with up to 95 athletes competing across nine distances ranging from 222m to 5000m in junior and senior categories," he said. Calling the championship a step towards hosting larger international competitions, Sharma, who is also a member of the Indian Olympic Association's Executive Council, said, "India is aiming to stage the Junior World Cup by 2027. While it is the country's dream to host the 2036 Olympics, hosting such events is a way to demonstrate our capabilities and extend our warm hospitality. The ISAI is working to secure major global events ahead, such as world cups, world tours, the 2029 Asian Games, and ultimately the Winter Olympics. India's first Asian Skating Trophy meet in Dehradun having country's lone Olympic-sized ice rink
Dehradun, Aug 16 (UNI) India will host its first Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy championship in Uttarakhand, announced by the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) here today. Sharing the details, Amitabh Sharma, President ISAI informed that the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2025, ever hosted in the country will be organised from August 20 to 23 here. The international skating tournament will witness participation from 11 Asian nations China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines competing in nine distances ranging from 222 metre sprints to 5000 metres relays. According to Sharma, the championship will be held in junior and senior categories. Nearly 240 skaters and officials will take part in the event with a contingent size of 18 from China, 27 from Hong Kong, 11 Indonesia, 13 Japan, eight from Malaysia, two players from Philippines, five from Singapore, 25 from Thailand, 19 Chinese Taipei, 16 Vietnam and 95 members from India. Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU) and organized by the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI), "This event signifies a bold leap for India's presence on the global ice sports map. All winter sports especially ice sports in India are still in a nascent stage of their growth. But with the revival of the Dehradun ice rink, it's like our tryst with destiny. This is the only international class ice rink to host a tournament like this,' said Amitabh Sharma, President ISAI. He added 'We are building a future where India can host even larger events like the Junior World Cup by 2027. While it's India's Dream to host the 2036 Olympics, this event is a way to showcase our capabilities, experience and hospitality to the world' added Sharma, who is also a member of the Indian Olympic Association Executive Council. It's notable that Dehradun based Himadri Ice Rink is India's only Olympic-sized ice rink to host Asian ice skating champion of international class ratified by ISU. The rink remained shut for several years due to high maintenance costs, and is now a symbol of resurgence, having recently hosted the 20th National Skating Championships. UNI XC BM

Fourie's flock gets wings
Kolkata: "I have a lot of belief in this group of girls. They are the future of Indian women's rugby!" These words of India rugby coach Kiano Fourie, during an online interaction with TOI, exuded his confidence in the team that scripted a historic continental medal for India on Sunday at the Asia Rugby U20 Championship 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar. The U20 Indian women beat Kazakhstan 17-10 and the UAE 31-7 while losing 7-31 to Hong Kong and finishing second from Pool B. They lost 7-28 to China in the semifinal, but came back with a purpose to beat Uzbekistan 12-5 in the bronze medal match. While the feat put the team in the limelight, away from it, this bunch of girls was climbing the rungs of success in age-group tournaments. "I came in contact with this group in 2023," narrated Fourie. "Before that, I was the head coach of the U18 women's team that won silver at the Asian meet in Taiwan. We beat the UAE in the group stage and then lost narrowly to them 7-10 in a well-contested final." The South African came to India in 2022 as a mentor to the Bihar rugby teams and then worked at Rugby India's High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar. "I knew that this group was special back then," Fourie said of the U18 tournament in Taiwan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mystical Forest Vase: Hot Sale topgadgetlife Shop Now Undo "It's actually a mixture of the top 12 from the U18 continental meets of 2023 & '24." Contrary to the current rhetoric around "homogeneity" in the country, the diversity in their regional identities — from their captain in Bhumika Shukla, hailing from a slum in Rajasthan to the four players from across Bihar or two state-mates from western Odisha — posed no threat to their developing as a unit. "It's the communication among ourselves that gives our team the edge," explained Ritu Majhi, an integral part of India's attacking lineup, who saw her dream of an Indian medal come true on Sunday. But a woman close-contact sportsperson is an antithesis to the society's expectation of a woman being submissive and meek, and in tune with the image of "the weaker sex". As a soft-spoken Majhi reiterates, "I always liked to fight! Not in the way that people do unnecessarily, but to be able to display my strength and stamina in a rule-based competition." While the Odisha girl had watched other members of her family pursue rugby in her childhood, for her state-mate cum teammate, 18-year-old Mamali Singh, it was a more amusing reason to choose a sport that's still in its nascent stage in India. "I just loved the shape of the ball when I first saw it. And I told myself, 'I have to play that game with the egg-shaped ball'," the promising Singh, who is also in line to be part of the U18 women's team for the upcoming Asia Rugby U18 Championship in Hohhot, China, conceded. Both of them were drawn to rugby when sent to study at KIITS International School and soon, like a number of their teammates, found themselves in the radar of Rugby India and coach Fourie. "There were no U20 tournaments in the last two years. But with the event hosted in India, we were excited to do really well," said Fourie, whose players did not disappoint after a three-week camp hosted by SAI Kolkata "with the best training facilities", and inclusion of a stipend from Rugby India for every player. Meanwhile, the senior women's rugby team qualified this year for the top-tier league in Asia by claiming silver at Asia Rugby 7s Trophy and a place among the top-eight Asian women's teams. They will start the campaign with October's Asia Rugby 7s Series Round 2 in Colombo and stay on course with their South African coach's belief that, "These girls can take India to the heights in rugby that will inspire the next generation of rugby players."
