Ariana DeBose mourns death of her mom at 57: 'My favorite person'

Ariana DeBose is in mourning after the loss of her mom and "best friend." The Oscar-winning "West Side Story" star, 34, shared in a touching Instagram post on Aug. 19 that her mother, Gina Michelle DeBose, has died at age 57 after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. "She was my favorite person, my biggest fan and toughest critic," DeBose said. "My best friend. She was my date to every important moment in my professional and personal life — and I wouldn't have it any other way. It had always been the two of us for as long as I can remember. She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn't be where I am without her." DeBose grew up in North Carolina, and her mother, a social studies teacher, raised her as a single parent. "Because it was just the two of us, we kind of raised each other," the "Hamilton" alum told Tamron Hall in 2023. In a 2016 interview with The Great Discontent, DeBose shared that she and her mom "lived with my grandmother for a portion of my youth," and her mother and grandmother helped her get into dance. "It was financially challenging because, at that point, it was just me and my mom," she said. "She was starting out in her professional career, so it was tough, but she took me to Dance Theater of New Bern." In her Instagram tribute, DeBose noted her mother's "life's purpose, aside from being my mom, was educating young people," and she had almost 30 years of experience as a public school teacher. A post shared by Ariana DeBose (@arianadebose) "My greatest and most proud achievement will always be to have made her proud," she added. "I love you mommy. Now travel amongst the seas, the winds and the angels as I know you always loved to do." DeBose also said that she "couldn't be more proud of her and how she fought this insidious disease" for three years. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 20,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States in 2025. Ariana DeBose talks 'House of Spoils' and why she's using her platform to get out the vote When DeBose won the Oscar for best supporting actress in 2022 for "West Side Story," she shared a hug with her mom, who joined her at the ceremony. DeBose also thanked her mom in her acceptance speech, saying, "I love you with my whole heart, and this is as much yours as it is mine." Ariana DeBose talks Disney's 'Wish,' being a 'big softie' and her Oscar's newest neighbor DeBose's mother visited the set of "West Side Story" during filming and met director Steven Spielberg, the actress told People. "Watching Gina become speechless was amazing," she told the outlet. Speaking with USA TODAY in 2020, DeBose also opened up about getting support from her mom after coming out as queer at age 11. "I was like, 'Mom, I think I could like boys and girls,'" DeBose recalled. "'I just really like humans.' And she said, 'OK. Cool.' That was it. And I realized how lucky I am to have had that experience, because that is not the norm."

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2' costume designer slams constant set photos: ‘Such a shame'

The devil is in the details. Emmy-winning costume designer Molly Rogers isn't thrilled with 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' set photos making the rounds. 'You know, people are just gonna get burned out with all the paparazzi shots,' Rogers exclusively told The Post. Advertisement She was referring to all the set photos of Anne Hathaway, 42, and fellow cast members such as Meryl Streep, 76, and Emily Blunt, 42, filming the upcoming movie in New York City. 8 Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in 'The Devil Wears Prada.' That are identifying every single thing they wear,' Rogers added. Hathaway and her co-stars have been identified as wearing clothing from Dries Van Noten, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Dior, Coach, and more. 'It's just such a shame,' Rogers said. 'A lot of times, you feel like you've already seen the movie just by the exterior shots.' Advertisement The costume designer acknowledged, however, that if a scene involves characters 'doing a walk and talk in New York,' then 'you can't do anything about' bystanders taking photos. 8 Meryl Streep is seen in a red dress filming scenes on 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' set in Manhattan. Advertisement In recent months, there have been steamy set photos of Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow filming their movie 'Marty Supreme.' In an interview with The Post in February, 'The White Lotus' executive producer David Bernad said that one of the biggest 'struggles' of filming the Emmy-winning HBO hit show was that 'tourists were filming us filming.' 8 Emily Blunt filming 'Devil Wears Prada 2' at Marlow East in New York City. Blunt is wearing a Coach sweater, Maison Margiela skirt, Gianvito Rossi shoes and Dior sunglasses. Christopher Peterson / 'The White Lotus' Season 3 was shot in a real hotel in Thailand, where fellow guests were also vacationing on the premises. 'There was a moment where we were filming a pretty sensitive scene, and there was somebody filming from a hotel room,' Bernad recalled. He ended up calling the person over and watching as they deleted the footage from their phone. When megahit 'Game of Thrones' was filming its ending, the show was even rumored to have filmed multiple 'fake' endings, in an effort to avoid spoilers and leaks. 'I think they're filming a bunch of stuff and they're not telling us. I'm being serious….I think that they don't even trust us,' series star Emilia Clarke told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. 'There's lots of different endings that could happen; I think we're doing all of them and we aren't being told which is actually what's going to happen.' 8 Anne Hathaway on the set of 'The Devil Wears Prada II' in Brooklyn on August 5, 2025, wearing a Rabanne dress and bag and Rene Caovilla shoes. It's become an unavoidable part of modern social media culture. The original 'The Devil Wears Prada' had costume designer Patricia Field, but Rogers, who has worked on 'Sex and the City' and the spinoff 'And Just Like That,' also worked on that film. Rogers has long been known as Field's protegee. Field, 83, hasn't publicly stated why she's not returning for the sequel, but she's also working on Netflix's 'Emily in Paris.' 8 Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep in 2006's 'The Devil Wears Prada.' The original 2006 movie follows aspiring journalist Andrea 'Andy' Sachs (Hathaway), who ends up landing a job as an assistant to high-powered fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep). Andy isn't interested in fashion and wants to do more serious journalism, but she takes the job at the fictional Runway magazine, anyway. The two women have a battle of wills, but ultimately end in a place of mutual respect. Andy also butts heads with Miranda's senior assistant, Emily (Blunt) and bonds with art director Nigel (Stanley Tucci). 8 Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway seen on the set of 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' in NYC on July 29, 2025. Advertisement The sequel will see Hathaway, Streep, Tucci, and Blunt reprise their roles, joined by Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, and Simone Ashley, among others. Sydney Sweeney and 'Summer House' alum Paige DeSorbo were also seemingly spotted on set, even though roles haven't been officially announced. 'Entourage' star Adrian Grenier, who played Hathaway's love interest, will reportedly not reprise his role. Australian actor Patrick Brammall will step in instead. 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' is expected to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
