US strikes on Iran spook ASX as crude oil price soars

Oil prices have surged as the rest of the market wobbled on Monday morning, with the ASX 200 suffering a 'very nervous start' to the trading week.
The ASX 200 fell 44.30 points or 0.52 per cent to 8461.20 on the opening bells as investors weighed up the risks in the Middle East.
The Aussie dollar also slumped, falling from US64.94 cents to US64.48 as the tension escalates.
Investors are worried about two major potential escalations in the conflict, with either the closure of the Strait of Hormuz or an all-out regional war negatively impacting the price of oil.
Cutting off the Strait of Hormuz could send the price of oil above $US100 a barrel, as the 32km mile stretch is the primary route of exports from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, and Kuwait.

Capital.com senior financial market analyst Kyle Rodda said traders would be looking to gauge risks of energy shocks and the potential impact of the broader conflict.
'The markets are confronting a very nervous start to the week where the only thing that will matter is the fallout from the US missile strike on Iranian nuclear assets over the weekend,' Mr Rodda said.
'There's already some talk of (closing the Strait of Hormuz) from the Iranians, with the instability in the region and risks to critical infrastructure alone enough to worry energy markets.'
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said closing the crucial Strait of Hormuz would be a 'suicidal' move to the Iranian regime.
Mr Rubio said closing the strait would affect the US, but it would have 'a lot more impact on the rest of the world', particularly on China.
'That would be a suicidal move on (Iran's) part because I think the whole world would come against them if they did that,' Mr Rubio said.
On Saturday (Sunday AEST), US forces confirmed strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities in the latest flair up between Israel and Iran.
US President Donald Trump said the three nuclear sites in Iran – Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz – were 'completely obliterated' but this is yet to be independently verified.

The armed conflict sent the price of Brent crude oil surging to above $US80 a barrel after it was about $US65 a barrel.
Mr Rodda said the first move by markets would be a possible kneejerk, with traders taking a shoot-first-ask-questions-later approach.
'But as the dust settles and more of the facts become known – especially the extent of the damage achieved by the US – the markets will turn to gaming out the likely course of events from here and quantifying the risks to asset prices,' he said.

Lunch Wrap: ASX left dazed as CBA and AGL land heavy blows

ASX slips as CBA and AGL drag hard
 AGL profit miss darkens outlook
Evolution pops on gold-fuelled dividend surge The ASX was looking a little pale after Tuesday's record close, and was down 0.55% by Wednesday lunchtime in the east. Wall Street had done its bit overnight – the big US indices closed at record highs again after an in-line CPI print kept a September Fed rate cut in play. The main problem was homegrown. Commonwealth Bank (ASX:CBA) and AGL Energy (ASX:AGL), two index heavyweights, were both weighing heavily on the index this morning. CBA dropped 6% despite posting a $10.25 billion cash profit that was up 4% and bang in line with forecasts. CBA's issue, though, wasn't the numbers, it was the valuation. At more than $200 in June, analysts say the stock had been priced like nothing could go wrong. But the RBA's rate cuts are squeezing margins, and investors have been quietly moving money into cheaper-looking stocks. CBA's shares have slipped to $170 since. AGL Energy (ASX:AGL) fared even worse today, down 14% after a 21.2% slide in full-year core profit thanks to thinner retail margins in a hyper-competitive market. AGL's core profit slid to $640m, missed forecasts, and guidance of $500m–$700m suggested the coming year won't be much brighter. Utilities as a sector shed more than 3%, with AGL doing most of the damage. In other large cap news, Treasury Wine Estates (ASX:TWE) gained 1% on a $200 million buyback and a lifted final dividend to 20c, but the tone wasn't all celebratory. Growth in Penfolds is tipped to slow in FY26, with Citi analysts noting that Chinese demand is cooling. Meanwhile, Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) was a standout, up 5% after handing shareholders triple last year's dividends on the back of record gold prices and higher copper production. Annual profit more than doubled to $926 million, with a 20-cent total payout for the year that makes the 7-cents of 2024 look like loose change. Top 10 at 11: ASX goes for a dip; mining stocks target critical minerals

Morning, and welcome to Stockhead's Top 10 (at 11… ish), highlighting the movers and shakers on the ASX in early-doors trading. With the market opening at 10am sharp eastern time, the data is taken at 10.15am in the east, once trading kicks off in earnest. In brief, this is what the market has been up to this morning. Profit taking sets the tone The market is in an odd kind of shape this morning, down 0.28% in the first hour with 8 of 11 sectors higher. After setting two new record closing highs this week, it's not terribly surprising to see traders lock in gains by selling down, taking profits in financial and utilities stocks in particular. The ASX 200 Utilities index is up 6.2% for the year so far, while the financials sector has added 8% over the same period. Oil dipped again overnight, sliding to US$66.15 a barrel of Brent. Gold futures also slid, down 0.2% to US3399 an ounce with spot gold trading at US$3344 an ounce this morning. Critical minerals are taking the spotlight in early trade, with three of our four small cap winners for the morning looking to unlock their strategic value. As a critical mineral, gallium is in high demand, garnering a US$1089 per kilogram price tag.
