Thelin's second-season record hints at success
Aberdeen may only be his fourth job as manager, his third professionally, but Jimmy Thelin is making this lark look easy. After a scintillating start to life as Dons boss, he recovered from a record-breaking winless run to out-tactic Celtic and deliver Aberdeen's first Scottish Cup in 35 years. Advertisement With foreign clubs reportedly casting a glance at the Swede's development already, plenty will be interested to see how he does in his second season. But what is his record like? Although he started in the Swedish sixth tier with FC Ljungarum, let's start at Jonkopings Sodra, who Thelin took over in 2014. His first season ended in a fourth-place finish in the Superettan, the Swedish second tier, which was the club's best finish since 1976. His second season saw them promoted back to the Allsvenskan for the first time in 46 years. They won the league by a mere point ahead of Ostersunds, managed at the time by ex-Chelsea and current West Ham boss Graham Potter. Advertisement In 2018 Thelin moved to one of the biggest clubs in Sweden - Elfsborg. They hadn't won the top flight since 2012 and had finished mid-table in 2017. They finished 12th in Thelin's first season, just four precarious points above the drop zone. The next season, they jumped to a mid-table eighth place. His side won 13 more points and scored 15 more goals, and all this after losing star striker Issam Jebali to Rosenborg. However, it was his third season, when the title went to the wire with Malmo, that Thelin really started to attract attention. But the signs are there that, if given time, he has a track record of improving things in his second season - even when dealt a bad hand or working with little funds like he was at Jonkopings. That shouldn't be much a problem next season, given the European windfall secured with the Scottish Cup victory. The challenge now is building on that.

Stark leads by one going into US Women's Open final round
The US Open, worth a record-equalling $12m (£8.9m), is the biggest championship in women's golf [Getty Images] US Open third-round leaderboard -7 Stark (Swe); -6 J Lopez (Spa); -5 M Saigo (Jpn), H Shibuno (Jpn), R Takeda (Jpn); -4 N Korda (US); -3 S Schmelzel (US), L Grant (Swe), M Lee (Aus) Selected others: -2 Y Noh (US), R Yin (Chi), G Lopez (Mex); Evens C Hull (Eng), A Yin (US); +1 L Ko (NZ); +2 A Nordqvist (Swe), L Woad (Eng) Advertisement Full leaderboard Sweden's Maja Stark opened up a one-shot lead at the US Women's Open after carding an impressive two-under-par 70 in the third round at Erin Hills. Stark birdied three holes on her penultimate round before finishing on seven under after a single bogey. The 25-year-old is chasing her second victory on the LPGA Tour, having won the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational. "[I am] probably going to go work out in the morning to try to get some nerves out, but I think just keep having fun with it because when I play scared, that's when I mess up, and you can't really play scared at a course like this," Stark said. Advertisement The Swede leads Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez, who climbed to second in the leaderboard after producing a round-of-the-day 68. The pair will be last out to start their final round, at 19:10 BST on Sunday. Japanese trio Mao Saigo, Hinako Shibuno and Rio Takeda are all tied on five under in third place. Successive bogeys hampered overnight leader Saigo's pursuit of a second consecutive major title to finish with a three-over 75, while world number one Nelly Korda remains in contention and trails Stark by three after making three birdies in her final five holes. "The first thing is that I would like to rest well and then tomorrow refreshed," Saigo, who won this season's Chevron Championship, said. Advertisement "I would like to start from zero. That result was not that good, but I don't think that I have to change anything. I just want to focus on my play."

Mock Drafts Differ On Sabres Target At #9
With less than two weeks before the 2025 NHL Decentralized Draft in Los Angeles, there are differing opinions of who the Buffalo Sabres will select ninth overall if they do not trade the pick. A mock draft from the Athletic earlier this month and Mike Morreale from projected the Sabres to select OHL defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson with their pick, but the Athletic's updated mock draft and Adam Kimelman have Buffalo adding a forward prospect. Aitcheson had a breakout offensive year with the Barrie Colts, jumping from eight goals last season to 26 goals, finishing behind only 2024 first rounders Zayne Parekh and Sam Dickinson among OHL defenseman. Aitcheson led the Colts with 59 points and scored 12 points in the OHL playoffs. Advertisement Other Sabres Stories Is Peterka In Prime Position For Big Payday? Sabres Summer Dilemmas - Bowen Byram Sabres Facing An Off-Season Of Change In their updated mock, the Athletic has the Sabres selecting Soo Greyhounds center Brady Martin at #9. The 6'0', 178 lb. Martin nearly tripled his point output in his second OHL season with the Greyhounds (33 goals, 39 assists), and his stock has been rising after an excellent showing for Canada at the Under-18s with 11 points in seven games. Kimelman projects Brampton Steelheads winger Porter Martone to be selected by the Sabres. The 6'3', 208 lb. winger had 98 points (37 goals, 61 assists) in 57 OHL games last season, and is considered the best winger in the draft class, but there has been speculation that the 18-year-old power forward could go as high as third overall to the Chicago Blackhawks, so the chances of Martone slipping to the Sabres six picks later seem unlikely.
