How Paul Skenes fared in his latest start with the Pittsburgh Pirates
Former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes continued his excellent sophomore campaign in a start vs. the Brewers.
Over six innings, Skenes allowed one run on four hits and two walks. He finished with eight strikeouts, including two apiece in the first and second innings. The Brewers scored their sole run against Skenes on an RBI single by Rhys Hoskins.
The quality start is Skenes' eighth of the season. It follows his complete game effort with nine strikeouts against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, which ended in a 1-0 loss for the Pirates.
The Pirates hit the road for three-game sets against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres over the next week. Skenes likely returns the bump in San Diego over the weekend.
Skenes' 2.36 ERA and 0.95 WHIP both rank third in the National League, while his 70 strikeouts rank fifth. Coming off his National League Rookie of the Year campaign, he cemented himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Paul Skenes to Red Sox? Insane Trade Thought Pushed by MLB Network Host

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last year's National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick, continues to pitch at a Cy Young Award-worthy level, but his talents are seemingly being wasted on the Pittsburgh Pirates. After finishing 10 games under .500 last season, 17 games out in last place in the NL Central, the Pirates are even worse this year — already 15 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs and 13 games under .500 with 100 games remaining. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, the same time, Skenes leads the National League in pitcher WAR at 3.2, WHIP at 0.88, and fewest hits allowed per nine innings with 5.8. His 2.05 ERA is second in the league. Skenes has also been a workhorse, with NL-best figures in games started (13), innings pitched (83 1/3), and complete games, though his league-leading total in the latter category is one. Yet with the Pirates, Skenes this year has a losing record of 4-6. The Pirates have lost eight of his 13 starts. In fact, in nine of his starts, Skenes has pitched at least six innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs. The Pirates record in those games is 4-5. With all of that in mind, MLB Network studio host Greg Amsinger threw out a wild idea. "So every fifth day we're going watch Paul Skenes shove and the Pirates lose 1-0 or 2-0. We're going to do that every fifth day?" Amsinger asked his co-hosts, former players Dan PLesac and Harold Reynolds, on a Wednesday broadcast. Then he pitched his trade idea. "If Paul Skenes were traded to the Boston Red Sox for Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, would you do it if you were the Pirates?" More MLB: Pirates Owner Wasting Paul Skenes Era, 'Should be Embarrassed,' MLB Analyst Says Mayer, Anthony and Campbell are known as the "Big Three" among Red Sox fans, as the organization's three top prospects. Mayer and Campbell have already made it to the Boston big league roster. Anthony is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, though for some reason the Red Sox have kept him at Triple-A Worcester all season so far. Together, that big three, along with several other highly-rated Red Sox prospects, represent the future of the Boston organization. Plesac, who pitched 18 seasons in MLB for six different teams, wasn't having it. "I'm not into trading him," Plesac said, referring to Skenes. "He's the identity of the Pirates. He's the one attraction that you have to get you to go out and watch a Pirate game." The MLB Network hosts did not address, however, the Red Sox's perspective on the proposed trade. Would the Red Sox sell their future for Skenes, even with four years of team control for the 22-year-old prodigy? It should be noted the Red Sox already have a starting pitcher who this season has been arguably as good as Skenes, or at least very close to his level. Has left-hander Garret Crochet fared better with Boston than Skenes with Pittsburgh? Crochet has a better ERA than Skenes at 1.98, and he leads the American League in strikeouts with 101 (Skenes has fanned 85). Crochet has also started 13 games, and thrown a league-leading 82 innings. His won-loss record with the Red Sox is 5-4. In his seven starts of at least six innings, allowing two runs or fewer, the Red Sox are 5-2. More MLB: Red Sox Frustrate Fans With Call-Up of Triple-A Outfielder Not Named Roman Anthony

Baseball Fans in Disbelief After Unfortunate Paul Skenes News

Baseball Fans in Disbelief After Unfortunate Paul Skenes News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's supposed to be a good thing when Paul Skenes and Boston Red Sox legend Pedro Martínez are in the same sentence. Advertisement Unfortunately for Skenes, he plays for a last-place Pittsburgh Pirates team that offers him no run support. Skenes limited the Houston Astros to three hits and one walk on Tuesday night. Although the reigning NL Rookie of the Year struck out eight, he, unfortunately, allowed a seventh-inning home run to Astros first baseman Christian Walker; that one run gave him a tough-luck loss in Pittsburgh's eventual 3-0 defeat, dropping him to 4-6 despite a brilliant 2.05 ERA. If that line sounds familiar, it's because Skenes posted similar numbers in a 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on May 18. Skenes struck out nine, walked none, and allowed just one run that night. Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul SkenesBrad Penner-Imagn Images As X/Twitter user @jayhaykid pointed out, no pitcher had earned losses in starts of at least eight innings with one or no earned runs, one or fewer walks, and at least eight strikeouts since Martínez in 2000. Advertisement 'I tried to type out 50 tweets but my [expletive] head kept hurting,' one user replied. Asked another: 'How do [general manager] Ben Cherington and [owner] Bob Nutting sleep at night?' Such is life for Skenes, who leads National League pitchers with a 3.2 bWAR despite his offense's best efforts. The Pirates are 5-8 in his starts, and they've scored two or fewer runs in four such games. Unsurprisingly, Skenes is 0-4 in those starts with a 1.86 ERA and 27-7 K-BB ratio over 29 innings. 'And the season isn't even halfway over!' a commenter pointed out. 'Imagine the new records Skenes can set with this offense supporting him!' Advertisement One fan tried staying positive. 'On the bright side of things, at least it happened this century,' they pointed out, 'which is better than 'hasn't happened since the early 1900s.'' Cubs' Carson Kelly, Added In Minor Move, Is Having Major Impact

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - MAY 28: Carson Kelly #15 of the Chicago Cubs looks on before a game against the ... More Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field on May 28, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Matt Dirksen/) Carson Kelly signed with the Cubs last December, only hours after Jed Hoyer had acquired Kyle Tucker from the Astros. Suffice it to say his addition didn't receive a lot of attention at the time. Here's how the Athletic viewed Kelly, who was signed after the Cubs had seen their other targets, Travis d'Arnaud (Angels) and Danny Jansen (Rays) sign elsewhere: 'Kelly figures to be a co-starter with young catcher Miguel Amaya as the Cubs try to upgrade a position group that was among the worst in the game for parts of last season. Amaya made significant in-season adjustments, though, hitting .271 with a .761 OPS after the All-Star break while continuing to build trust with pitchers. Still, with their catching options dwindling, the Cubs had to make a move.'' Amaya was the Cubs' Opening Day starter but Kelly started the second game in that series against the Dodgers in Tokyo, then had a five-RBI game on March 31, in his third start. He followed that up with a three-run homer in his first start at Wrigley Field and steadily hit his way into the middle of the order. The cost to add the 30-year-old Kelly was $11.5 million over two seasons, with a $7.5-million mutual option for 2027. That looks like one of the best bargains in last winter's free-agent market, especially with Amaya expected to miss four-six weeks with a strained left oblique. Amaya, who was having a nice season himself (.280 with four homers, 25 RBI and an .818 OPS in 27 games), injured himself making a throw on May 24. The Cubs promoted veteran Reese McGuire to back up Kelly. McGuire was signed to a minor-league contract in January and was hitting .280 with an .827 OPS at Triple-A Iowa. Kelly had accrued 5.9 fWAR in his first nine seasons. Fangraphs' calculations have him at 1.5 through 38 games this season. Despite being in a time-share with Amaya for most of the season, he ranks behind only the Dodgers' Will Smith among National League catchers in fWAR. Look for Kelly to receive strong consideration for next month's All-Star Game. He is batting .268 with nine homers and a .913 OPS through Wednesday and, per Statcast, is doing an average job behind the plate (despite a -1 grade for framing). Kelly's contract pays him $5 million in 2025 and '26, and includes a $1.5 million buyout for the '27 option. He will add $250,000 if he starts 81 games and another $250,000 for 91 starts. With bat-first prospect Moises Ballesteros crushing the ball in Triple-A (.333 with six homers and an .886 OPS), the Cubs are positioned to possibly trade a catcher. But they're rightfully focused on the postseason after a 38-23 start, making the surplus most likely an issue for the off-season, not the mid-season trade deadline. They're in the enviable position of having depth at the catcher's spot. That's a significant edge they picked up without having to spend heavily.
