Jon Rahm's telling LIV Golf admission after 'bittersweet' £13million win

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Jon Rahm won his second consecutive LIV Golf season title after a consistent 2025, despite having zero victories through the year compared to Joaquin Niemann's five
Jon Rahm admitted Joaquin Niemann was 'probably more deserving' of winning the LIV Golf title after pipping the Chilean to the post. The Spaniard secured his second consecutive LIV honour, despite losing a play-off after finishing 22-under in Indianapolis on Sunday.

The overall victory saw the 30-year-old rake in a hefty £13.3million in prize money. Rahm shot 11-under on Sunday but wasn't crowned that particular weekend's LIV champion.

The accolade instead went to Sebastian Munoz, Niemann's team-mate at Torque GC. Munoz shot a 59 on Friday, a professional golf record in a round also featuring a double bogey.

Niemann, who has five wins under his belt this year compared to Rahm's zero, has previously suggested that LIV Golf should reconsider its points structure after narrowly missing out in the overall standings. However, the Chilean was full of praise for his rival when speaking after Sunday's event.
"It was quite a show by Jon. I obviously played with him today, and I knew it was going to be a good battle," Niemann said. "It was going to be a long day. I knew I needed to play well. I knew Jon was playing amazing golf lately."
Niemann ended the weekend tied for fourth place at -17. "I played good. I started playing my best golf on the back nine, which I'm proud of it, but at the end of the day, the putts didn't drop, and it wasn't enough," he admitted.
Rahm, fresh off consecutive play-off losses, finished the year with four runners-up finishes and eight top 10s. He was somewhat tepid in his acceptance of his overall title and even suggested LIV's current system may be flawed.
"Still slightly bittersweet," the Spaniard said about how he was feeling. "Like I know I'm supposed to be happy. It's a great moment.
"But it just doesn't feel great to finish the year losing two play-off games. Have a great Sunday today and then hit the pin and an unfortunate moment on the play-off hole."

He was also quick to praise Niemann, who earned a £5.9m bonus instead. "You need a lot of coincidences to go on exactly with the year Joaquín had," Rahm said.
"He's won five times; he's played incredible golf. One could argue that he was probably the more deserving guy to win this.
"But we have the points system that we have, and somehow, I don't know how, I managed to pull through and get it done."
Rahm now boasts a second LIV Golf triumph to add to his already sparkling CV, which includes victories at the 2023 Masters and the 2021 US Open - plus a string of other major top-five finishes.
The rest of the top five performers from the weekend's LIV event in Indianapolis were: Munoz (-22*), Rahm (-22), Dustin Johnson (-20), Niemann (-17), David Puig (-17), Branden Grace (-17), and Carlos Ortiz (-17).

Arsenal braced for permanent transfer approach as defender exit talks continue

Arsenal are working hard to shift a number of fringe players within Mikel Arteta's squad before the September 1 transfer deadline Arsenal are continuing to work on outgoings as sporting director Andrea Berta seeks to streamline Mikel Arteta's squad. Defender Jakub Kiwior, who was left out of Sunday's 1-0 Premier League win at Manchester United, remains the subject of strong interest from Porto. ‌ The Portuguese giants saw a package bid, an initial loan with an obligation to buy worth up to £23.3million, rejected by Arsenal earlier this month but club-to-club discussions are continuing. ‌ Arteta is not itching to sell the Pole but respects the player's openness towards a transfer given the Spaniard is not able to provide him with any assurances of game time this season. ‌ Arsenal would favour a permanent deal as they're yet to make a notable sale this summer but Porto are prioritising an initial loan that would become permanent next summer - though it's clear they need to raise their offer to get closer to the Gunners' valuation. Porto are in a hurry to raise cash to finance another offer and remain determined to partner Kiwior with his international team-mate Jan Bednarek at the heart of their defence. AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus have also been credited with an interest but at this stage, the 25-year-old is closer to joining Porto than any other side as the two clubs remain in direct contact over a deal. Another stipulation is that Kiwior would likely need to be replaced. Although Riccardo Calafiori can provide centre-back cover for Gabriel Magalhaes, he is predominately viewed as a left-back and the departure of Takehiro Tomiyasu also means Arsenal would be light in reserve at the back, should Kiwior depart. Stade Rennes' Jeremy Jacquet remains appreciated but he is right-footed and is comfortable remaining in France where regular minutes are on offer. Arsenal were keen on signing Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen earlier in the window but there is recognition it will prove difficult to entice a top-bracket, ready-made centre-back to the club given William Saliba and Gabriel will undoubtedly remain first choice. Jorrel Hato would also have been reconsidered as a potential option if he was still at Ajax but he has since signed for Chelsea. ‌ Werder Bremen have also now emerged as strong favourites for Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein. Levante have been keen on a loan swoop for the Estonian international shot-stopper but Arsenal have been pushing for a permanent sale as Hein is out of contract at the Emirates next summer. Eintracht Frankfurt have just announced the signing of Werder Bremen No.1 Michael Zetterer and Hein is viewed as a suitable replacement as he could rival Mio Backhaus for the No.1 spot in Germany. Sevilla were also looking to sign Hein on loan before landing Newcastle's Odysseas Vlachodimos. ‌ It's understood Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker has played a role in facilitating a potential transfer, utilising his contacts at Werder Bremen, who he previously represented during his playing days before joining the Gunners in 2011. Arsenal are still trying to find a solution for Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian was monitored by Fenerbahce but they're now prioritising a loan deal for West Ham's Edson Alvarez, instead. Real Betis, who came close to landing Zinchenko during his time at Manchester City, are among a list of European clubs to have been offered the chance to land the 28-year-old. He has one year remaining on his current deal in north London and Arsenal are pushing to sell to avoid losing the versatile left-back on a free transfer in 2026. Greek side PAOK have so far failed to follow up interest in Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Rory McIlroy relishing ‘great opportunity' to lift FedEx Cup from level start

Rory McIlroy relishing 'great opportunity' to lift FedEx Cup from level start Masters champion McIlroy is second in the FedEx rankings behind defending champion Scottie Scheffler Rory McIlroy acknowledges the crowd at the 2025 Open (Image: PA Wire/PA Images) Rory McIlroy says he is comfortable with the format change at this year's Tour Championship, which gives each one of the 30-strong field a unique chance to lift the FedEx Cup. ‌ Masters champion McIlroy is second in the FedEx rankings behind defending champion Scottie Scheffler, but will not start with a two-shot deficit as the unpopular starting-strokes format has been scrapped this year. ‌ Every player will start equal at East Lake in Atlanta on Thursday, meaning the Tour Championship winner will also be crowned FedEx champion and will pocket the £7.4million on offer. ‌ McIlroy said: "Any time you make it back to East Lake you've had a good year and it's always nice to come back. "We've played this event and this golf course in a bunch of different formats. "It has a different feel, any one of the 30 has a chance to win the FedEx Cup this year, which is obviously a lot different than it's been in previous years. Article continues below "It's a clean slate for everyone and it's a great opportunity for one of the guys who maybe wasn't a huge part of the season to put their hand up and have a chance to win the big prize at the end of the year. "It's also an opportunity for some of the guys who have had great years to rubberstamp the season a little bit and end of a positive note. There's still a lot to play for this week." Tommy Fleetwood, up to fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings after back-to-back tied-third and tied-fourth finishes, said he was excited that this year's new format gives everyone an equal chance. ‌ He said: "I'm sure everybody aside from Scottie Scheffler will love the fact we're all starting on a level playing field. You win this week and you're holding two trophies." Fleetwood, who has had seven top-10 finishes this season, is still chasing his first PGA Tour win after coming close at the FedEx St Jude Championship before his tied-fourth finish on Sunday at the BMW Championship. He added: "I'll finish it off at some point. I'll get it right and I'll get it right more than once. Article continues below "Best-case scenario, coming down the stretch at East Lake with a chance to win. Whether I get it right or not, whether someone plays better or not, I'll talk about that after."

Valuable point for Abergavenny in 1-1 draw

Summer signing Ben Brooks headed the Pennies in front from Corey Mitchell's 37th minute corner before Iwan John hit back for the visitors seven minutes later. The hosts made a solid start when Brooks volleyed into the side netting from a third minute cross before Ashley Morris made an important save with his feet four minutes later to deny Troy Hiscock-Greening following a low cross from the left. Abergavenny Town's Alfie Jones saw his shot inside the penalty area blocked in the eighth minute before Tye Duggan diverted the rebound over the crossbar. Iwan John was denied by Morris in the 17th minute before Joshua Pope's shot was blocked four minutes later after a corner was only partially cleared by the home defence. John flashed an effort wide of the target in the 23rd minute before the Caerphilly Athletic goalkeeper Chris Alexander dropped a cross two minutes later but Harrison Reynolds saw his ensuing close-range effort blocked. Brooks volleyed over from the edge of the penalty area in the 27th minute following a cross from the right before Morris came out to block Jason Gardiner after he pounced on a mistake in the home defence. John fired an effort wide from 25 yards in the 32nd minute before Duggan's volley from inside the penalty area was deflected behind for a corner. Brooks broke the deadlock from the ensuing set-piece before he nearly doubled the lead in the 40th minute but was denied by Alexander following a cross from the right. The visitors were on level terms four minutes later when John latched on to a well-timed through ball to coolly finish past Morris. The visitors started the second-half with Pope directing an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area in the 48th minute following a break down the left flank. Abergavenny Town responded four minutes later with Brooks' free-kick taken just outside the left edge of the penalty area clipping the top of the crossbar before Duggan's 56th minute header was saved from a cross on the right. Duggan then had a far post header blocked from a corner three minutes later prior to John having a couple of efforts blocked six minutes later and Pope striking an upright. Gardiner directed an effort wide of the far post from a 70th minute cross before Brooks saw a shot blocked from a corner 12 minutes later following a swift counter-attack by the Pennies. However, it was the visitors who looked more likely to secure a winning goal in the closing stages. John pounced on an error in the home rear-guard and rounded Morris but placed the ball wide of the target whilst under pressure. Dafydd Pearce drove into the penalty area three minutes later but his effort was blocked prior to Hiscock-Greening's shot from the edge of the penalty area blocked in stoppage-time. Abergavenny Town now turn their attention away from league action for the next few weeks as they visit Ardal South East rivals Caldicot Town on Saturday in the JD Welsh Cup second qualifying round.
