Russell Martin tells Rangers boo boys pain comes before change and being two goals down is a second leg 'privilege'
Russell Martin had no problem with Rangers fans booing the team off in their 3-1 loss to Club Brugge - but has pleaded with supporters that the 'precursor to change is pain'.
A nightmare first half in which they shipped three goals in 20 minutes has seen Gers' hopes of reaching the promise land of the Champions League left in tatters ahead of the return leg of their Champions League play-off in Belgium in six days time.
Thousands of furious fans headed for the exits after the visitors raced into a 2-0 goal lead with just seven minutes on the clock, and those who did stay until the end jeered Martin and his players as they departed the pitch, with Danilo's second half goal reducing the scoreline.
And while former Southampton boss Martin understands the fan fury, he reckons Rangers' second half performance has done enough to give those disgruntled punters some hope that they can still progress to Europe's premiere competition.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, he said: "Yes, they are all entitled to their opinion, although I do think we are going to need them so much.
"This club has had a long period - bar one season - where it hasn't been as successful as it wants to be and as aligned as it wants to be.
"So we need to come together. (With) the second half performance, I hope they went away feeling like 'this tie is not over' and that the team wants to run and fight for them and for each other. The team is going to need them.
"The precursor to change is pain unfortunately. I knew coming here that there was going to be some pain early on.
"We have to make sure that pain is really worth it. We had some big pain tonight in the first half but the player's response has given me nothing and energy about what is to come.
"So we all grew together through this but we have to grow together as a club. We need to give the supporters more moments like we did in the second half to really make them feel good about what is to come. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and they are the most important people at the club but we are going to need them.
Martin also insists Danilo's consolation has kept the tie very much alive.
"I think that goal changes everything", he added. "I think it's a really precarious position. We have been in front by two goals or three goals and gone away to teams who can just throw caution to the wind.
"We have the beauty and privilege of being in that position now, hunting and chasing. We definitely go into it underdogs so I am going to enjoy that and I think the players will as well."

Wednesday's briefing: Alexander Isak goes public and Rangers suffer big setback
Isak's statement – swiftly responded to by the club – came in a social media post which explained his absence from the PFA awards ceremony in Manchester, where Mohamed Salah and Mariona Caldentey received accolades. On the pitch, Rangers' hopes of reaching the Champions League took a major hit. Isak made clear his determination to leave Newcastle this summer as he issued a statement on Instagram that concluded: 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue.' But Newcastle quickly responded with a statement saying no commitment was ever made by a club official that the Sweden striker could leave this summer and that they 'have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired'. However, the club left the door open for Isak to 'be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates'. Liverpool star Mohamed Salah collected his record third PFA men's player of the year award, with Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey collecting the women's accolade at a ceremony in Manchester on Tuesday. The 33-year-old Egypt international scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists as Arne Slot's Reds stormed to last season's Premier League title. 'I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today, it's something that makes me so proud,' Salah said. The women's award went to Caldentey, who joined Arsenal from Barcelona last summer and scored 19 goals in all competitions, helping the Gunners lift the Champions League. 'Everyone at the club has made it so easy for me and they helped me from the start and it just feels like home and I'm happy to be here,' she said. Rangers suffered a nightmare start to the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Club Brugge. Gers defender Nasser Djiga inexplicably allowed a long ball past him in the third minute and grateful visiting striker Romeo Vermant coolly lofted over stranded goalkeeper Jack Butland, before further strikes from Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele had the visitors 3-0 up after just 20 minutes. Brazilian striker Danilo pulled a goal back four minutes after the break but the Belgian side will have a two-goal cushion for next week's return leg. Gers boss Russell Martin insisted: 'The tie is still open and the players feel that.' England forward Michelle Agyemang has returned to Brighton for a second season-long loan spell from Arsenal, having scored five goals in 22 games for the club last term. The 19-year-old scored two vital equalisers in the knock-out rounds at Euro 2025 to propel the Lionesses into the Basel final, where they successfully defended their title in a penalty shootout victory over Spain. Agyemang was named young player of the tournament after her breakthrough campaign, and has been nominated for the women's Kopa trophy at this year's Ballon d'Or awards. Celtic are up against Kazakh side Kairat in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying play-off in Glasgow. Oliver Glasner will hold a preview press conference for a game Crystal Palace hoped they would not be playing – their Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikstad – and will be sure to face questions on the future of Eberechi Eze. Bolton host Reading among a handful of EFL and National League matches.

Ross County's Arron Lyall spells out risks of complacency as Staggies set their sights on Premiership return
Arron Lyall insists any hint of Ross County slackness will be punished as the Staggies set out to seal the club's immediate return to the Premiership. The attacking midfielder is one of 11 new arrivals at the Dingwall club and he's relishing this fresh challenge. The 21-year-old, who had a four-month loan stint at Inverness in 2021 when he was coming through the ranks at Rangers, is delighted to have made the Highlands his base for at least two years. On Saturday afternoon, County will host Championship rivals Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup, needing three points to get through as Group B winners and into the second round. They trail Thistle by two points, therefore only a victory will be enough to knock their opponents off top spot. A stunning 8-0 demolition of League Two Edinburgh City on Tuesday kept County in contention. Once the dust settles on this final tie, the attention will switch to their pursuit of the title. Lyall stressed there's no room for complacency – despite the high expectations nationally. He said: 'When you come down from the top-flight, a lot of teams are expected to go straight back up. 'However, the Championship is a very hard league. I played a lot of games in it over the past two seasons, it is tough. 'We'd like to think we're going to win the league, but we must not expect to win it. We must be focused for every single game. 'If we play to the best of our ability, then we've a really good chance, but any slackness and you will be punished. There are a lot of good teams and good players in the Championship. 'If you're not at the top of your game every game, then you can be punished.' Lyall had a ball in his year at Morton, impressing Ton boss Dougie Imrie having been on loan at Airdrieonians from Rangers from January to May 2024. He made 42 appearances for the Cappielow side and walked off with the club's young player of the year prize. That form was noticed by County manager Don Cowie, who secured his services on a two-year contract on June 21. Lyall was impressed by Cowie's early bid to sign him as he spelled out the target of getting back to the top-flight in one shot. He explained: 'I loved my time at Morton. It was great. 'I have such respect for Dougie Imrie, who was brilliant with me last year. 'The gaffer here phoned me quite early in the summer and made it clear a few times what his plans were for this season. 'He didn't mess around and told me what he wanted, and this move was a no-brainer for me.' Ronan Hale's first competitive hat-trick for County, a Jay Henderson double, a strike from Kieran Phillips and a brace from 16-year-old substitute Joe Coyle buried visitors Edinburgh City in midweek. County now know a victory against Thistle on Saturday will put them into the second round of the Premier Sports Cup. That rout came on the back of a 1-0 win at Queen of the South and Lyall explained they've been improving game by game since slipping up away to League Two Stranraer in their first tie in their section. He said: 'It was good to put on such a good performance on Tuesday, especially in our first home game. 'The Stranraer game especially wasn't great when we drew the game after being 1-0 up and then we lost on penalties. 'We expect better from ourselves, even if it is to grind out a 1-0 win. In the Championship, we might need to do that a few times. 'But Tuesday was more of a show from us. To score eight goals was brilliant. 'I was buzzing for young Joe Coyle to get two and for Ronan Hale to get his first hat-trick in Scotland.'
