Rugby Championship 2025: Breakdown of current Bok squad and all the fixtures
While Australia wrap up their three-Test series against the British and Irish Lions this weekend, South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina are all already busy with their preparations for the upcoming Rugby Championship, which kicks off on 16 August.
Rassie Erasmus' Boks are the defending champions and will hope to go back-to-back for the very first time in the competition.
The reigning world champions have only won the Rugby Championship (and before that the Tri-Nations) five times — 2024, 2019, 2009, 2004 and 1998. New Zealand have won 20 titles, Australia four and Argentina are yet to win a title.
The Boks are currently training in Joburg ahead of their first match — against Australia in Johannesburg on 16 August.
Here is everything you need to know about the current squad:
The squad consists of 37 players, 24 of whom are World Cup winners, while five players only made their debuts this season — they are Ethan Hooker (utility back), Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Boan Venter (both props), Marnus van der Merwe (hooker), and Cobus Wiese (utility forward).
Three recent World Rugby U20 Championship winners from the Junior Springboks team, namely Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste, and Haashim Pead, have been invited to train with the senior Boks over the next two weeks.
Bath prop Thomas du Toit has been granted a compulsory two-week rest as agreed with the Premiership, although he is eligible to be called up at any stage should the need arise, while No 8 Jasper Wiese is currently serving a four-week suspension, ruling him out of this squad.
A number of players have been put on standby should they be needed by the Boks. They are Lukhanyo Am (centre), who missed the July Tests due to a knee niggle, Faf de Klerk (scrumhalf), Makazole Mapimpi (wing), Salmaan Moerat (lock), Evan Roos (No 8), Neethling Fouche (prop), and Vincent Tshituka (flanker).
The Boks have so far this season beaten the Barbarians in a friendly match, Italy in two Tests and Georgia in a one-off Test.

Former Arsenal player Partey granted bail on rape charges
Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. As bail conditions were discussed in court, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring said: "I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now." Partey is due to appear at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. A spokesperson for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said the group was "profoundly disappointed" in the London club over their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: "We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in, week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. "We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue." Barber said the group wanted the club to publish their sexual violence policies, "suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences" and "properly support the survivors". British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana.

Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag
Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag "doesn't matter" as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. Two Springboks who must fire or face the axe
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has made it clear that sentimentality will have nothing to do with selection as the team plans and prepares for the squad likely to head to the 2027 World Cup. Already we have seen the likes of Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am and Faf de Klerk cut from the latest squad at the start of the Rugby Championship, with some veterans inevitably needing to make way for the 'next gen' of talent. With this in mind, there is no doubt that two players in particular need to make the most of their opportunities this season if they are to remain in the mix through to 2026 and beyond. Cobus Reinach Even at the age of 35, Reinach has remained in the Springbok picture to date, which is testament to the value that the national coaches clearly believe he offers. However, the fact of the matter is that Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg have made great strides in recent times, and that's without even factoring in other experienced options such as De Klerk and Jaden Hendrikse. When considering that Reinach will be 37 by the time the next World Cup rolls around, though, this really is the season where he needs to prove that age is just a number, especially considering the meteoric rise of Junior Springboks scrumhalf Haashim Pead. Jean-Luc du Preez Make no mistake, this is a big season for Du Preez. At the age of 29 and with 14 Test caps to his name, this is either the point where he pushes on and establishes himself as a fixture in the Springbok team, or continues to be a yo-yo man of sorts who falls in and out of the squad. His versatility to play across the back row is of great value, and with a few No 8s currently unavailable, it's a real opportunity for him to bank some meaningful game-time in that position. If he can prove to be consistently impactful, this could be a real breakthrough season for JLDP. If it's not, it's likely the axe will fall once again.
