‘Tariffing India won't stop Putin': US Democrats panel slams Donald Trump's trade move

Democrats in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversees America's foreign policy, said targeting India with tariffs has no bearing on stopping Russian President Vladimir Putin or ending the war in Ukraine. US President Donald Trump with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi.(PTI File) 'Tariffing India won't stop Putin. If Trump really wanted to address Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, maybe punish Putin and give Ukraine the military aid it needs. Everything else is smoke and mirrors,' House Foreign Affairs Committee Dems wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the statement, the panel shared an interview with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said if tariffs on India failed to curb Russia, more secondary tariffs could follow. 'We've put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,' Bessent said. He added that Trump would make it clear to Putin that 'all options are on the table.' 'I'm not going to get ahead of the president, but the president is the best at creating leverage for himself, and he will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table,' Bessent said. Describing sanctions as fluid and adjustable, Bessent added, 'Sanctions can go up. They can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely. You know, there's this Russian shadow fleet of ships around the world that I think we could crack down on.' Bessent said European leaders were reluctant to back US calls for secondary sanctions, saying that at a G7 meeting, they avoided committing to steep tariffs on China. 'The Europeans need to join us in these sanctions. The Europeans need to be willing to put on these secondary sanctions. I was at the G7 meeting in Canada with President Trump and the Europeans kept talking about Senator Graham's bill to do the secondary tariffs,' said Bessent. 'And I looked at all the leaders around the table, and I said, is everyone at this table willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China? And you know what? Everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing,' he added.

'May have to think...': After meeting Putin, what Trump said on tariffs for countries buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he may have to think of retaliatory tariffs on countries buying Russian oil in two to three weeks, but doesn't have to do so right now. US President Donald Trump speaks during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.(AFP) His remarks came shortly after he concluded his high-stakes meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and briefly addressed the media alongside him. "Well, because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that (tariffs)," Trump reportedly told Fox News' Sean Hannity after the meeting. "Now, I may have to think about it in two weeks or three weeks or something, but we don't have to think about that right now. I think, you know, the meeting went very well." Trump had announced last month that he would impose secondary sanctions on countries doing trade with Moscow, as he threatened 100 per cent tariffs on Russia.

Trump, Putin arrive in Alaska for high-stakes talks on Ukraine

New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Alaska this evening for their high stakes meeting for peace in Ukraine. Immediately after dismounting from their respective aircraft, both leaders shook hands. Both leaders are accompanied by high-level delegations indicating that the talks could also include issues like trade and economy, besides peace in Ukraine. President Putin is accompanied by his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Policy Aide Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. The US delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other senior members. According to reports these include Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for peace missions. Ahead of the meeting Yury Ushakov said the programme for the leaders' meeting has been agreed upon. He said that everything will start at approximately 11:30 local time with a one-on-one between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Following this the talks will continue in a delegation format, extending into a working breakfast. He said that given the highly sensitive and critical topics will be discussed, the negotiating parties have been limited to a select group. On the Russian side, the delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, besides Ushakov himself. The composition of the American delegation is also known, though it would be appropriate to await an official announcement from our American partners. Thus, in addition to the presidents themselves, each delegation will include five members. Naturally, expert teams will also be present nearby. After the talks, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a joint news conference to sum up the results of the negotiations. Regarding the summit's agenda, it is evident to all that the central topic will be the settlement of the Ukraine crisis, including considerations from the discussions held in the Kremlin on August 6 with the participation of the US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. However, broader issues related to ensuring peace and security, as well as pressing international and regional matters, will also be addressed. An exchange of views on the further development of bilateral cooperation, including in the trade and economic spheres, is also expected. ''It is worth noting that this cooperation holds immense, yet regrettably underutilised, potential.'' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said ahead of the talks that Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end. ''We count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Russia must end the war. The killings must stop. A meeting of leaders is needed–at the very least, Ukraine, America, and the Russian side–and it is precisely in such a format that effective decisions are possible. Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is very much needed,'' Zelenskyy said. UNI RB 0040
