Iowa football 2025 schedule preview: Week 4 vs Rutgers
This isn't your parents' Scarlet Knights football program. Greg Schiano has found a way to breathe new life into a program that needed a spark. After an 8-5 record and a bowl win in 2014, their first season in the Big Ten, Rutgers went 13-47 across the next five seasons, including a disastrous tenure for Chris Ash. Following the 2019 season, Rutgers fired Ash and brought back Schiano, who had previously coached the Scarlet Knights from 2001-2011 and won five bowl games.
The move has paid off.
Since Schiano returned to Piscataway, Rutgers is 26-34 with three bowl game appearances and a victory in the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl over Miami (FL). And the hype around the team is high entering the 2025 season. After back-to-back seven-win seasons, Rutgers is looking to take the next step. And they return some really talented players. History between the Hawkeyes and Scarlet Knights
Iowa and Rutgers have played each other four times on the gridiron, with the Hawkeyes winning all four games. In those games, Iowa has outscored Rutgers 96 to 17, including a 22-0 victory in the last matchup between the two teams on November 11, 2023. The closest game in the series was the first game between the two back in 2016, a 14-7 Iowa victory on the road.
While Rutgers lost star running back Kyle Monangai to graduation, they still have a talented team that will provide Iowa with a great test to begin their 2025 conference slate. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on September 19 at SHI Stadium.

Big Ten media days: Northwestern ready for a second season with lakefront vibes
LAS VEGAS — As Northwestern football awaits the renovation of Ryan Field, being upgraded to a state-of-the-art venue in time for the 2026 campaign, the Wildcats return to the 12,000-seat Martin Stadium for a second straight season. 'Who else gets to play on a lake in college football?' asked incoming quarterback Preston Stone, who transferred in from SMU. 'It's unbelievable, it's an incredible opportunity for us to get to play in a unique environment.' Ticket prices on the school's website range from $94 to $413 for the home opener against Western Illinois on Sept. 5. One week later, against Big Ten foe Oregon and with Fox Sports' Big Noon Kickoff in town, ticket prices trickle upward in the range of $156 to $670. 'I think where we landed was the perfect solution and perfect bridge,' Northwestern coach David Braun said on Wednesday, the second of three Big Ten media days. 'It's unique, it's intimate. It allows our guys to have a level of consistency in terms of where they're playing for all their home games. Allows for our students to engage. And then you bring the element of, I mean, you are on one of the most prime pieces of real estate in the entire country, right on Lake Michigan. Beautiful fall day, Big Ten football, it's pretty special.' New year, new slate, no outside noise. That's the mantra in Happy Valley, despite James Franklin being saddled with a 4-20 mark as coach at Penn State against teams ranked in the AP Top 10. 'Coming to Penn State, I came here to win Big Ten championships and win a national championship,' Penn State safety Zakee Wheatley said Wednesday. 'The beginning of every year, that's expectations. Whatever happens, happens. But that's how I go into the season every year. 'Coach Franklin does a great job of making sure we're laser focused on the task at hand.' Right now, the task is to open camp with a fresh mindset and zero in on the season opener against Nevada on Aug. 30. Forget his collective 101-42 mark at the helm or the two College Football Playoff victories before falling to Notre Dame in last year's national semifinal. As Franklin enters his 12th season leading the Lions, with 10 trips to the postseason in 11 years, the 53-year-old never seems to escape the narrative of losing big games. Nittany Lions fans might be happy to know Franklin feels he has the best combined personnel he's ever had at Penn State, from players and staff, to depth, to talent and experience. 'We're very excited about that,' Franklin said. 'There's a ton of conversations that are happening nationally. We embrace that. We've earned that based on what we've been able to do and what we've got coming back. 'We were a game away from playing for the National Championship, and you could actually make the argument a drive away from playing for the National Championship, but it didn't feel that way, right? Because the expectations at Penn State are really high. We embrace that.' Wheatley, a fifth-year senior, agreed, saying it's the best atmosphere he's been around since landing on campus. 'The amount of film work and amount of extra work being put in, the energy around the building right now is electric,' said Wheatley, whose 16 tackles in the Orange Bowl against Notre Dame tied for the third-most recorded by a Penn State player in a postseason game. 'With the amount of veteran guys we got coming back and leadership we got going on, it kind of flows from freshmen to seniors. Everyone feels good right now.' Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell wasn't sure what could be tougher: the Badgers' upcoming schedule or the ride-along in an F-16 fighter jet at Nellis Air Force Base he's scheduled to take Thursday. 'The immediacy of the now, the ride-along is going to put more pressure on my body,' Fickell said, laughing. 'But in the long run, the schedule is going to take more years off my life.' In a friend-of-a-friend situation involving a former player, Fickell's butterflies were aflutter as he talked about taking to the skies over southern Nevada with a fighter pilot. 'I know what my body's going to feel like when I'm all said and done,' Fickell said. Among those on Wisconsin's schedule this year are Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State and Oregon. 'There's nothing harder than what's in front of us,' he said. 'We understand that, but we're not going to shy away from it, either.' Maryland coach Michael Locksley displayed a bit of vulnerability, revealing he lost his locker room after the Terrapins finished 4-8 in his sixth full season with the program. It marked Locksley's first losing record since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He had navigated Maryland to three straight bowl appearances while winning at least seven games each of those season. He said the new world in which players get paid created divisions in the locker room. 'We had 'haves' and 'have-nots' for the first time in our locker room,' Locksley said. 'The landscape of college football taught me a valuable lesson: Continue to educate players on the importance of what playing for something bigger than yourself is all about.' Where does Marcel Reed land on The Athletic's rankings of all 136 starting quarterbacks?
Texas A&M's success on offense won't entirely depend on redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, primarily due to the program's deep running back room, veteran offensive line, and experienced defense that should prevent opponents from scoring 30 or more points throughout the season. Still, even the best rosters need solid quarterback play to win key games on the road and defend homefield against sneaky opponents that pose a threat, which, this season, includes the Florida Gators and South Carolina, which could easily come down to quarterback play on both sides. After throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns after trading starts with Conner Weigman, Reed has spent the majority of the offseason working on his throw game, looking to improve his accuracy, velocity, and touch to pair with his already elite ability as a runner. With all this work, playing in OC Collin Klein's system, which was built for a player of Reed's skill set, the sky is truly the limit with new wide receiver KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State), who will join Terry Bussey, Ashton Bethel-Roman, and Izaiah Williams in a rotation that is much faster, quicker, and built to separate against tight coverage. However, not everyone in the national media believes in Reed's true dual-threat ability, as The Athletic's recent rankings of 136 college quarterbacks placed Reed at No. 26 overall and in the third tier. Here's what authors Sam Khan Jr. and Antonio Morales had to say about his placement: "Reed, a late take in A&M's 2023 recruiting class, filled in for the injured Conner Weigman, then took over as the starter in the final month of the season after a breakout performance in a win against LSU. He showed enough that the Aggies didn't take a QB to compete with him for the starting job in the portal after Weigman left." While this is simply a fact, it was smart to point out that head coach Mike Elko did not bring in another veteran arm, outside of backup Jacob Zeno, to compete with Reed for the starting spot, solidifying his full belief that the Tennessee native is more than capable of leading the Aggies to a Playoff spot. But both authors still believe that Reed has a lot to prove from the pocket. "He need to develop more as a passer, but he has good arm strength and fluid motion, and he's a good fit for Collin Klein's offense, which utilizes heavy doses of the quarterback run game." Collin Klein's scheme possesses enough "easy buttons" for Reed in the passing game, which his offseason strength training should provide a bigger cushion during designed runs and making plays with his legs. This ranking is fair, for now, but if Reed can get the job done early and prove his worth as a reliable thrower, expect scouts to take notice. James Franklin predicts historic season for Penn State running back duo
Following the 2024 college football season, which saw Penn State reach the semifinal of the College Football Playoff, there were some questions as to which of Penn State's dynamic running back duo would return. Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen each could have explored other options, be it the NFL or a potential transfer destination to no longer share the backfield. But then a funny thing happened. Both running backs decided to run it back in Happy Valley in 2025. There was much rejoicing, especially from head coach James Franklin. "I thought one of those guys would decide to declare for the NFL and the other one would come back," Franklin said during his Big Ten football media day press conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon. He was not alone in thinking one of the two would be playing football somewhere else this fall. It may still be surprising for many to see Singleton and Allen each suiting up in the blue and white once again. Singleton and Allen each rushed for 1,000 yards last season (Allen rushed for a team-high 1,108 yards and Singleton rushed for 1,099 yards) during Penn State's playoff run. Even with the benefit of playing in a total of 16 games last season (12 regular season games, the Big Ten championship game, and three College Football Playoff games), Penn State received terrific production from its top two running backs, who have embraced playing together as a cohesive combo since their arrival as standout freshmen. Being able to bring both back for another season is nothing to overlook, especially behind Penn State's beefy offensive line. "[When] you talk about taking some of that production, we've got two great running backs," Franklin said during Big Ten media day. "You know as well as anybody Penn State from a historical standpoint at the running back position, been a ton of really good players. It's amazing to me that both Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have a chance to be the all-time leading rushers in Penn State history, 1 and 2, and they've been sharing carries their entire career." When the 2025 season kicks off for Penn State (Aug. 30 vs. Nevada), Singleton will already be Penn State's 10th all-time leading rusher with 2,912 career rushing yards. Right behind him on the list is Allen with 2,877 career rushing yards. Penn State has seven players in program history who have rushed for at least 3,000 career yards. It could take just one game for that number to increase. And yes, the top spots on the all-time list are attainable for Singleton and Allen. Evan Royster is Penn State's all-time leading rusher with 3,932 yards. Saquon Barkley is second on the list with 3,843 career rushing yards. Will Allen and Singleton be the new kings of the Penn State rushing record book by the end of the season? It is entirely possible and would be a remarkable feat.
