Rutgers hopes transfer portal brings depth to offensive line and bolsters decimated defense
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers coach Greg Schiano brought in a program-record 19 players in the transfer portal this season, placing an emphasis on improving his defense and bolstering the offensive live. The Scarlet Knights return four starters on the offensive front, and have five new players joining that group. 'We are always evaluating what's in the portal,' Schiano said. 'If we feel we can make our football team better, then we will actively get engaged with players. 'I always say, 'Is there a need at any position?' If there is, we are going to look a little harder at that.' Tackles Zach Aamland (Illinois), Hank Zilinskas (Colorado), Moshood Giwa (LIU), Justin Cesaire (New Haven) and Ryder Langsdale (Lafayette) will add depth to a unit that will be missing four-year starter Hollin Pierce, who anchored a Rutgers line that was third in the Big Ten in rushing. Pierce was an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles. The defense should get a boost from the portal as well. Eric O'Neill (James Madison) and Bradley Weaver (Ohio) should see significant time at defensive end and cornerback Cam Miller (Penn State) could be a disrupter for a unit that lost seven of its top-10 tacklers to graduation. The Scarlet Knights allowed 35 or more points in five games last season, finishing 95th in the nation in total defense (393.8 yards per game). Rutgers was picked tied for 13th with Michigan State in the Big Ten preseason poll. Who replaces Kyle Monangai at running back? Florida Atlantic transfer C.J. Campbell Jr. will share the workload with Antwan Raymond in replacing Monangai, who rushed for 1,200-plus yards in each of the past two seasons. Raymond ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns in place of Monangai, who chose to sit out the Scarlet Knights' 44-41 loss to Kansas State in the Rate Bowl. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round. Passing game should be a strength Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis is back after starting all 13 games for Rutgers in 2024. He was the first Rutgers QB to throw for 2,000-plus yards since 2015. He will benefit from returning wide receivers Ian Strong and KJ Duff. 'He (Kaliakmanis) looked really comfortable in the back half of the season,' Schiano said. 'I thought we had a legitimate Big Ten offense.' Defense has 1 full-time starter returning Linebacker Dariel Djabome is the lone full-time starter returning on a unit that had a difficult time getting off the field on third down. Rutgers was 98th in the county in third-down efficiency in 2024 and the hope is that the transfers will make an immediate impact. Reliable kicker Senior Jai Patel is one of the most reliable kickers in the country and tops among field-goal percentage leaders in Rutgers history. The New Jersey product has converted 30 of 37 field goals (81.1%). The schedule The Scarlet Knights will get four cracks at preseason ranked teams this fall, three in a span of four weeks in November when they face No. 2 Penn State (November 29), No. 3 Ohio State (November 22) and No. 12 Illinois (November 1). Rutgers hosts No. 7 Oregon on October 18. The Scarlet Knights have not defeated a ranked team since overcoming No. 23 South Florida on November 12th, 2009. Since then, Rutgers has lost 41 straight to ranked teams by an average of more than 29 points. Rutgers opens the season at home against Ohio on August 28. After three home non-conference games, it faces Iowa to open Big Ten play at home on September 19. ___ AP college football:

Here's Rutgers football's full schedule for 2025 season, including dates, times, channels
Rutgers football is coming off two consecutive postseason appearances. Can the Scarlet Knights make it three in a row? That's what Greg Schiano's team will be looking to do in 2025 with a reloaded roster, emerging talent on both sides of the ball and an experienced quarterback in Athan Kaliakmanis. Buy Rutgers football tickets But Rutgers also faces a daunting schedule, with Big Ten elites Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon all on the slate. It's going to be imperative for the Scarlet Knights to get off to a strong start with their nonconference schedule, and then handle business against the more beatable (relatively speaking) conference teams on the schedule. Want to see all the action throughout what should be an intriguing season? Take a look below for Rutgers football's 2025 schedule, with start times and TV channels. Here is where Rutgers football ranks nationally ahead of 2025 season
As the 2025 college football season quickly approaches, national analysts are filing their final preseason predictions. There seems to be a consensus around Rutgers among them. The Scarlet Knights are ranked between 61st and 65th nationally by a quartet of national outlets ahead of the college football season, which officially kicks off with Week 0 action this weekend. Rutgers opens its campaign next Thursday, when it hosts Ohio. A pair of ESPN computer rankings are a bit higher on head coach Greg Schiano's program, which looks to earn a third consecutive bowl bid while facing one of the toughest schedules in college football this fall. Here is where Rutgers ranks nationally ahead of the 2025 season: ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI): 42nd. The FPI gives Rutgers a 74.2% chance of winning six games and notching its third consecutive bowl bid despite having the 21st-hardest schedule in FBS football this season. ESPN's SP+ rankings: 47th. The SP+ rates Rutgers' schedule as the 16th-hardest in college football, estimates the Scarlet Knights will get 5.9 wins and says they rank eighth nationally in overall returning production (71%) and third nationally in returning offensive production (81%). The Massey Ratings: 51st. These rating account for 44 different polls. The Associated Press: Rutgers did not receive any votes in the preseason Top 25 poll. The Athletic: 65th. The offense returns a bevy of experience but not workhorse running back Kyle Monangai. FOX: 62nd. Greg Schiano returns 22 players from his two-deep last year, 10 of whom were starters. And, believe me, he's going to need that depth come October. Don't look now, but Rutgers has put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time as Big Ten members. While the loss of Kyle Monangai will be felt, Florida Atlantic transfer CJ Campbell rushed for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Antwan Raymond was serviceable with just over 450 yards on the ground for Rutgers last year. Athan Kaliakmanis has two years as a starter at Minnesota and Rutgers and while he's not likely to throw for 4,000 yards, he's an experienced field general capable of throwing for 3,000 and 25 touchdowns. The problem for Rutgers is the whole second half of their schedule, which features Oregon, at Illinois, at Ohio State and at Penn State. Assuming the Scarlet Knights begin 3-0 with wins against Ohio, Miami (Ohio) and Norfolk State, they'll need to find ways to claw three wins from some combination of Iowa, at Minnesota, at Purdue, at Washington and Maryland. College football toughest schedules based on preseason poll
Granted, the preseason rankings aren't 100% accurate. But as it stands with less than a month to go before the season begins, there's some difficult schedules several teams. So who has the toughest? Here's the top 10 based on the preseason coaches poll. 10. Purdue Barry Odom gets a difficult welcome as he takes over a Purdue team that went 1-11 last season and hasn't beaten an Bowl Subdivision team since November 2023. After starting Big Ten play against Southern California, the Boilermakers travel to No. 5 Notre Dame on Sept. 20, which is followed by a home game against No. 12 Illinois. There's a brutal end to the season where Purdue plays three of its last four games against ranked opponents. It starts at No. 14 Michigan and then No. 2 Ohio State at home the following week, and the season ends with a visit from in-state rival No. 19 Indiana. 9. Rutgers After getting Rutgers into a bowl game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2013-14, Greg Schiano has a tall task if he wants to do it in three consecutive campaigns. While the front half of the schedule is favorable, the second half that could have the Scarlet Knights getting bruised. They host No. 7 Oregon and two weeks later play at No. 12 Illinois. After hosting Maryland, the Scarlet Knights have a tough finish with a trip to Ohio State on Nov. 22 and Penn State coming to town in the season finale. 8. Vanderbilt Diego Pavia brought life to the Commodores with their first bowl win since 2013. There's momentum in Nashville, and it'll be a challenge to deliver on it. Vanderbilt opens SEC play at No. 13 South Carolina, and Oct. 4 marks the beginning of a tough month-long stretch where it will play at No. 8 Alabama, home against No. 9 LSU and at No. 1 Texas. Then there's the annual season finale against No. 18 Tennessee at rowdy Neyland Stadium. 7. Texas A&M The No. 21 ranked team in the preseason poll will be fighting all season to make sure it stays in the Top 25. The Aggies have a highly anticipated non-conference matchup on Sept. 13 at No. 5 Notre Dame. From there, there's four other ranked matchup sprinkled throughout the rest of the season, with No. 17 Florida visiting on Oct. 11 and a trip to face No. 9 LSU on Oct. 25. No. 13 South Carolina comes into town Nov. 15, and the season ends with the first trip to Austin since 2010 to play No. 1 Texas. Arkansas was able to survive playing seven ranked opponents in 2024, and it will have to almost perform the same task with six games against teams in the preseason poll. The Razorbacks start conference play at Mississippi, and two weeks later, will play host to No. 5 Notre Dame. It starts a three-game stretch against ranked opponents with a trip to No. 18 Tennessee followed a home matchup with No. 21 Texas A&M. Then comes one of the hardest back-to-back road trips by visiting No. 9 LSU and No. 1 Texas in November. 5. Kentucky Mark Stoops is coming off his worst season at Kentucky since his first in 2013. The Wildcats will play six ranked teams thanks to a rough conference slate. After facing No. 15 Mississippi in Week 2, Kentucky is at South Carolina and then travels to No. 4 Georgia the following week. The Wildcats return home to square off with No. 1 Texas and No. 18 Tennessee. A 0-5 SEC start very possible. If that stretch wasn't enough, there's a home game against No. 17 Florida in November. 4. Wisconsin Luke Fickell's seat is hot after Wisconsin wasn't bowl eligible for the first 2001. The Badgers play at No. 8 Alabama on Sept. 13 before starting a rigorous Big Ten schedule that includes three teams from last year's playoff. The first ranked opponent comes with a visit to No. 14 Michigan on Oct. 4. Two weeks later, the Badgers host No. 2 Ohio State and No. 7 Oregon in back-to-back games. Before playing Minnesota for Paul Bunyan's Axe in the season finale, Wisconsin has to face No. 19 Indiana on the road and No. 12 Illinois in the final home game. 3. Mississippi State The Bulldogs were picked to finish last in the SEC after failing to win a conference game in Jeff Lebby's debut season. The schedule doesn't do them any favors with seven games against teams in the preseason poll. Mississippi State hosts No. 11 Arizona State on Sept. 6 and three weeks later is the start of a four-game stretch against ranked foes. It hosts No. 18 Tennessee and then travels o No. 21 Texas A&M. After a bye week, the Bulldogs go into The Swamp to face No. 17 Florida before returning home to play No. 1 Texas. On Nov. 8, they welcome No. 4 Georgia and play the annual Egg Bowl against No. 15 Mississippi on Black Friday. 2. Oklahoma The expectation is for Brent Venables to turn things around in Norman with a loaded roster, but he will face several tests that could derail those hopes. No. 14 Michigan comes to town Week 2 and the Red Rivalry matchup in Dallas against No. 1 Texas on Oct. 11 starts a monstrous second half with six of the final seven games against ranked opposition. After facing their biggest rival, the Sooners head to No. 13 South Carolina before returning home to play No. 15 Mississippi. They have consecutive road games at No. 18 Tennessee and No. 8 Alabama. The final two games at home aren't much easier with a visit from Missouri and a matchup with. 9 LSU in the regular-season finale. 1. Florida There's palpable hype in Florida after the strong finish to last season, and the Gators get rewarded with the toughest schedule in the country. Week 3 starts a stretch of three consecutive games against top 10 opponents: at No. 9 LSU and at No. 10 Miami ahead of a home game with No. 1 Texas. The grind doesn't stop afterward with a trip to No. 21 Texas A&M the following week. There's the annual meeting with No. 4 Georgia to start a November schedule tht also includes heading to No. 15 Mississippi and playing host to No. 18 Tennessee.
