Here is where Rutgers football ranks nationally ahead of 2025 season
There seems to be a consensus around Rutgers among them.
The Scarlet Knights are ranked between 61st and 65th nationally by a quartet of national outlets ahead of the college football season, which officially kicks off with Week 0 action this weekend. Rutgers opens its campaign next Thursday, when it hosts Ohio.
A pair of ESPN computer rankings are a bit higher on head coach Greg Schiano's program, which looks to earn a third consecutive bowl bid while facing one of the toughest schedules in college football this fall.
Here is where Rutgers ranks nationally ahead of the 2025 season:
ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI): 42nd.
The FPI gives Rutgers a 74.2% chance of winning six games and notching its third consecutive bowl bid despite having the 21st-hardest schedule in FBS football this season.
ESPN's SP+ rankings: 47th.
The SP+ rates Rutgers' schedule as the 16th-hardest in college football, estimates the Scarlet Knights will get 5.9 wins and says they rank eighth nationally in overall returning production (71%) and third nationally in returning offensive production (81%).
The Massey Ratings: 51st.
These rating account for 44 different polls.
The Associated Press: Rutgers did not receive any votes in the preseason Top 25 poll.
The Athletic: 65th.
The offense returns a bevy of experience but not workhorse running back Kyle Monangai.
FOX: 62nd.
Greg Schiano returns 22 players from his two-deep last year, 10 of whom were starters. And, believe me, he's going to need that depth come October. Don't look now, but Rutgers has put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time as Big Ten members.
While the loss of Kyle Monangai will be felt, Florida Atlantic transfer CJ Campbell rushed for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Antwan Raymond was serviceable with just over 450 yards on the ground for Rutgers last year. Athan Kaliakmanis has two years as a starter at Minnesota and Rutgers and while he's not likely to throw for 4,000 yards, he's an experienced field general capable of throwing for 3,000 and 25 touchdowns.
The problem for Rutgers is the whole second half of their schedule, which features Oregon, at Illinois, at Ohio State and at Penn State. Assuming the Scarlet Knights begin 3-0 with wins against Ohio, Miami (Ohio) and Norfolk State, they'll need to find ways to claw three wins from some combination of Iowa, at Minnesota, at Purdue, at Washington and Maryland.
CBS: 63rd.
Sporting News: 61st.

Paddy Pimblett appreciates Khamzat Chimaev showing 'levels of the game' in UFC 319 win
Paddy Pimblett disagrees with the fans who booed Khamzat Chimaev's UFC 319 performance. Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) landed 12 takedowns and had over 21 minutes of control time in a lopsided decision win over Dricus Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) to claim the middleweight title in Saturday's main event at United Center in Chicago. As Pimblett watched Chimaev hold down Du Plessis round after round, he couldn't help but praise the challenger's dominance. "For the casuals, this isn't going to be a fun fight to watch, but for people who actually do MMA and old school opinions, they'll appreciate this," Pimblett said on his YouTube channel. "I appreciate it because this is levels of the game, and Khamzat's grappling level is very high. His wrestling and MMA wrestling is brilliant. "I don't know if I've ever seen a fight like this, like champion, such a one-sided beatdown because Chimaev nearly won every second of this fight. Joe Rogan is right: Khamzat looks fresh. Everyone questioned his cardio going into this fight, and he looks sound. ...The crowd is booing. It's not Khamzat's fault that Dricus can't stop him doing this." As he wrapped up his breakdown, Pimblett didn't waste the opportunity to take a shot at fellow lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan. "Arman doing his best to get as much screen time as he can while his mate wins the belt," Pimblett said. "Closest that tool comes to touching it." This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Paddy Pimblett: Only casuals would hate Khamzat Chimaev's UFC 319 win

Red Sox calling up outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, nicknamed 'The Password,' team's No. 3 prospect
The Boston Red Sox have called up their No. 3 prospect, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, the team announced on Thursday. Garcia joins the Red Sox as they begin a four-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Nicknamed "The Password" because of that difficult-to-spell first name, Garcia began the season in Double-A before being promoted to Triple-A Worcester. Overall, he batted .289/.363/.512 with 17 doubles, 20 home runs and 73 RBI in 433 total plate appearances. (With Worcester, he had a .303/.367/.564 slash average with 12 doubles, 17 homers and 56 RBI.) This story will be updated with more information.

After being released by Mets, right-hander Paul Blackburn signs with Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) — A week after his final appearance with the New York Mets, Paul Blackburn signed with the Yankees on Thursday to provide bullpen depth for the AL wild-card leaders. Blackburn was originally supposed to be with the Yankees for Wednesday's game against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field, but encountered extensive flight delays in Texas after flying in from Idaho and did not arrive in New York until early Thursday afternoon after rebooking flights. 'Yesterday I spent pretty much all day in the airport with delays and cancellations and everything,' Blackburn said before the Yankees opened a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Blackburn was 0-3 with a 6.85 ERA with the Mets this season. The right-hander last pitched the final five innings of an 11-6 loss to Atlanta on Aug. 13 when he allowed two runs. 'Some depth, some length,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'Our pen right now is not filled with a lot of guys that give us a lot of length, so obviously a track record of success in the big leagues." The 31-year-old Blackburn was originally designated for assignment by the Mets on Saturday to make room for prospect Nolan McLean. The Mets announced he was released on Tuesday after declining an outright assignment to the minors and clearing waivers on Monday. 'It was tough but I think it's a good place to start over,' Blackburn said. 'Just kind of contribute anyway I can here for the rest of this year and go from there.' Blackburn was originally acquired by the Mets from the A's on July 30, 2024, and made five starts before he was diagnosed with spinal fluid leak in his back and had season-ending surgery. He began this season on the injured list with right knee inflammation and an illness delayed his season debut until June 3. After a 7.71 ERA in six appearances, Blackburn returned to the IL with right shoulder impingement before getting activated last week. 'It's been weird,' Blackburn said. 'Honestly, I didn't know what to expect or what to do with it. I just tried to continue to stay ready, continue to throw, continue to be available unless someone called.' Blackburn is 22-31 with a 4.96 ERA in 93 games (86 starts) since debuting with the A's in 2017. He went 7-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 21 games for the A's in 2022 and made his lone All-Star team. To clear room on the roster for Blackburn, Allan Winans was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. ___ AP MLB:
