‘How long can we fight anti-social elements?': Once a popular tourist spot, Shimla's Glen Nature Park now lies in shambles
Tattered remains of a welcome signboard at the entry gate, a partially burnt and broken wooden floor of a rain shelter, and piles of garbage at various spots: nearly seven years after it was inaugurated amid much fanfare, Glen Nature Park in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla presents a dismal picture of official apathy today.
'When the park was inaugurated, locals and tourists would flock in large numbers to enjoy walking the trails. Over the period, things deteriorated, footfall declined, and unsocial elements made this park their haven,' says Raghuvir Chandel, a Kaithu resident and a frequent visitor to the park.
Inaugurated in July 2018, Glen Nature Park spans around 164 hectares and is surrounded by Annandale, Chaura Maidan, Summer Hill and Boileauganj. It has three walking trails, including the historic British-era Brass Path leading to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, through scenic vistas lined with cedar, pine and oak trees. The other two trails lead to Himachal Pradesh University at Summer Hill and Sangti village. Entry to the park is free.
'Imagine the hooliganism: people did not just break the wooden floor of the rain shelter, they also burnt it to cook food. It is still lying unrepaired. The park shares a boundary with a government residential colony, and residents found a good dumping ground for their garbage,' adds Chandel.
The park is bisected by the main link road connecting the Annandale Helipad and Chaura Maidan near the Vidhan Sabha building. The portion under the Gawahi Gram Panchayat, where the three trails are located, is visibly in a better condition than the other half.
'How long can we fight antisocial elements?' says Sanjay Azad, president of the Gram Sudhar Sabha, Gawahi. 'We have informed the authorities, including the local police and forest department, several times. Someone from our village calls the police or forest guards every other day. While responses do come, they are temporary. A permanent solution would be regular deployment of guards and staff at the park,' Azad adds.
Azad is part of a voluntary group working for the betterment of the village and its neighbouring areas, including Glen Nature Park. 'But without the authorities' contribution, our wings are clipped,' he adds.
Pawan Chauhan, Shimla Divisional Forest Officer (Urban), admits that they are aware of these issues. 'Though we do not have permanent staff posted at the park, Glen Beat Forest staff visit there periodically. We also conduct cleanliness drives from time to time. The wooden floor of the rain shelter was burned a year ago, and we are aware of it. The wooden floor and signboard will be repaired as soon as we receive a budget,' he says.
'We have repaired the motorable road and the walking trails, but it cannot support regular vehicular movement. During incessant rains in 2023, landslides took place in the park, and many damaged sections have since been restored,' Chauhan adds.

Why a British F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing in Kerala's Trivandrum airport
A United Kingdom (UK) Navy F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Saturday night. The stealth aircraft, which is believed to have taken off from a British aircraft carrier operating in the region, touched down safely around 9:30 PM, according to airport sources. According to airport sources, cited by PTI, the aircraft had to make an emergency landing after reporting low fuel mid-flight. "The pilot reported low fuel and asked for permission to land. Everything was handled quickly and professionally," the source said. Authorities at the airport quickly declared an emergency to facilitate a smooth and safe landing for the advanced fifth-generation combat aircraft. Refuelling will take place once approval is received from the relevant authorities in the Central government, as required for any foreign military aircraft operating within Indian airspace, sources said. The jet is currently parked at the airport under tight security. Meanwhile, the Air Force officials have termed the emergency landing a routine diversion, stating it was fully aware of the situation, provided all necessary assistance, and is coordinating with relevant agencies. "This is a normal occurrence of diversion by an F-35. The IAF was fully aware and facilitated the aircraft for flight safety reasons. All assistance is being provided, and the IAF is coordinating with all relevant agencies," the IAF said in their statement. The F-35 Lightning II, developed by the US-based Lockheed Martin and used by key NATO allies including the United Kingdom, is one of the most advanced fighter jets in service globally. The Indian Navy and the United Kingdom's Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG25) conducted a joint naval drill, commonly known as a Passage Exercise (PASSEX), in the western Arabian Sea earlier this week. "UK CSG25 joined the Indian Navy for an exercise in the western Arabian Sea," read a post from the UK Carrier Strike Group. The two-day exercise included various naval activities such as coordinated anti-submarine operations, tactical manoeuvres, unified control of helicopters, and professional exchanges between naval officers.

British F-35 Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing At Kerala Airport
Show Quick Read Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed New Delhi: A British F-35B Lightning II fighter jet made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala late on Saturday night after running low on fuel while on a sortie over the Indian Ocean. The 5th-generation stealth fighter is part of the UK's HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, which is currently operating in the Indo-Pacific and had recently completed joint maritime exercises with the Indian Navy. Military aviation experts describe the incident as unusual but not unprecedented. The F-35B variant is specifically designed for short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL), allowing it to operate from aircraft carriers without catapult systems. It is not clear why the aircraft was unable to recover onto the Prince of Wales, although early indications suggest poor weather conditions around the carrier may have prevented a safe landing. The F-35 programme, spearheaded by US defence contractor Lockheed Martin, is widely regarded as one of the most advanced multirole fighter aircraft platforms in service today. The aircraft's stealth capabilities, electronic warfare systems, and data-sharing infrastructure are central to the US, UK, Israel and NATO's modern air strategy. Neither the UK Ministry of Defence nor Lockheed Martin have issued statements on the specifics of the emergency landing. As of Sunday morning, the fighter jet remains parked at Thiruvananthapuram airport.

Why A British F-35 Fighter Jet Made Emergency Landing In Kerala
A British F-35B fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Kerala on Saturday night, after dangerously running low on fuel while flying a mission over the Arabian Sea. The stealth aircraft, part of the UK's HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, was operating in the Indo-Pacific and had recently wrapped up joint maritime drills with the Indian Navy. Military sources say the jet encountered adverse weather near the aircraft carrier, which made it unsafe for a recovery at sea. With fuel levels dropping critically, the British pilot requested clearance to land on Indian soil. Authorities swiftly granted permission, and the jet was guided to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. It landed safely around 10:30 pm. The pilot was unharmed. Indian Navy officials and the British High Commission are coordinating with local authorities to refuel and assess the jet before it rejoins carrier operations. Officials confirmed the aircraft is in a secure section of the airport, and there no damage or technical fault was identified as of now. Engineers from both sides will oversee its departure once conditions permit. The British F-35B Lightning II is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet renowned for its short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities, which make it uniquely suited for operations from aircraft carriers like the HMS Prince of Wales. Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F135 engine with a Rolls-Royce LiftSystem, the F-35B can hover and land vertically on short runways or even on amphibious assault ships-an essential feature when carrier landings become risky due to bad weather or rough sea conditions. With its low radar signature, supersonic speed, and cutting-edge sensor fusion, the aircraft offers unmatched situational awareness, making it a critical asset for modern air forces. The incident comes amid heightened public focus on aviation safety, following the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad only days earlier. The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off, killing 274 people, including several on the ground. Investigations are underway, with the flight's black box recovered and aviation regulators ordering checks across India's Dreamliner fleet.
