Body of Dubai-based travel agent exhumed from burial ground in Karur

COIMBATORE: A day after the Peelamedu police arrested five persons in connection with the murder of Dubai-based travel agent D Sigamani, police exhumed his body and held an autopsy, the second in a week, from a burial ground in Karur on Saturday. Sigamani (47), a native of Puliyanthoppu in Thanjavur, was working as a travel agent in Dubai. Police sources said allegedly, Sigamani developed an affair with Saradha, a receptionist at a farm in Dubai and a native of Gandhimaa Nagar. Sigamani had loaned Saradha some money and demanded to return it.
The duo often quarrelled over this, and Sigamani also beat her. She returned to her house in Gandhimaa Nagar along with Sigamani on April 22. Police said Saradha gave Sigamani food laced with sleeping pills after he consumed liquor with her stepfather Thiyagarajan. When Sigamani was semiconscious, Thiyagarajan attacked him. With the help of henchmen, Saradha took Sigamani's body and buried it in Karur.

‘Anbadum Mundril', an initiative launched to foster love, brotherhood, harmony among students, wins Chief Minister's Best Practices Award

An initiative launched in the district in 2023 to foster love, brotherhood and harmony among the school students after Tirunelveli witnessed a few clashes among the students on caste-lines has won the Tamil Nadu Government's appreciation. The students' harmony programme, 'Anbadum Mundril', which was launched in October 2023 in the district, has won the Chief Minister's Best Practices Award as this initiative has done wonders on the school premises. This initiative, conceived by the then District Collector K. P. Karthikeyan was launched by Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare Udhayanidhi Stalin after a 17-year-old Scheduled Caste boy from Nanguneri and his sister were hacked by a group of teens, also his schoolmates, belonging to an intermediate caste in August 2023. Since this brutal attack brought to light the deep-rooted hatred even among the teens from different castes, Mr. Karthikeyan, after a lot of discussion, designed 'Anbadum Mundril' in Tirunelveli district on a 'pilot basis'. Initially, it was introduced in 105 government and government-aided high and higher secondary schools in Tirunelveli district with active participation of representatives from education, police, revenue, local administration, sports and skill development departments and the psychologists and the counsellors from Madurai-based M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Centre. The programme assessed the skills and psychology of the children first and addressed the issues through scientific approach. Apart from the children, their parents and teachers were also given counselling by this special team. Teachers of these schools were screened and moulded by the counsellors. The progress made through this initiative at the end of each academic year was evaluated and extended to other schools also wherever this intervention was needed. This initiative also focuses on guarding the children away from liquor and drug abuse by explaining to them through life examples. After pinpointing their skills, the children are guided properly for strengthening their skills in their area of interest, improving their concentration, career guidance, self-employment etc. Since these children had to be insulated from caste outfits, due measures were put in place with the police removing the paintings in public places with caste overtones. Any evil force misguiding the children in the name of caste or religion are being dealt appropriately. 'It was a sincere attempt to put an end to the enmity or clashes among the school students through sustained psychological but play-way intervention. With sustained approach, the initiative has won the Chief Minister's appreciation now,' the then Collector, now Managing Director, ELCOT, said. The then ASP V. Prasanna Kumar, tahsildar P. Balakrishnan and BDO V. Yamuna played their role effectively in promoting 'Anbadum Mundril' in Nanguneri after the attack on the SC teen and his sister and they have been selected for the 'Chief Minister's Best Practices Award' 2025 announced on the eve of Independence Day.

Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra Cheating Case: Businessman's Audio Call With Deepak Kothari Goes Viral

On Thursday, Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra were booked by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for allegedly cheating a Mumbai-based businessman of Rs 60.4 crore. Hours after Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra were accused of cheating a Mumbai-based businessman of Rs 60 crore, an audio of the latter with the complainant, Deepak Kothari, has now surfaced on social media. In the viral audio, shared on social media by Filmygyan, a man, said to be Kothari, is heard saying that the funds given to Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty were an equity investment and not a loan, as alleged in his complaint. Another voice, which is said to be that of Raj Kundra is also heard saying, 'Karza toh liya nahi tha maine aapne, yeh baat maan ni padegi aapko." However, News18 Showsha cannot verify the authenticity of the audio. What Are The Allegations Against Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra? On Thursday, Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra were booked by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for allegedly cheating a Mumbai-based businessman of Rs 60.4 crore in connection with a loan-cum-investment deal. Another unknown person was also charged in connection with the incident. The complainant, Deepak Kothari, has alleged that the couple defrauded him of over Rs 60 crore, which involved Shetty and Kundra's now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd. According to Kothari, he invested the amount between 2015 and 2023 under the pretext of expanding a business, but the money was allegedly misused for personal expenses. EOW is now investigating the case. Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra Call Allegations 'Baseless' After the complaint, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's lawyer denied the allegations, saying they were purely civil in nature and had been adjudicated by the NCLT Mumbai on October 4, 2024. 'This is an old transaction, wherein the company went into financial distress and eventually got entangled in a long legal battle at the NCLT. There is no criminality involved, and our auditors have submitted all the necessary supporting documents from time to time, as requested by the EOW, including detailed cash flow statements," said advocate Prashant Patil. 'The investment agreement in question is purely in the nature of an equity investment. The company has already received a liquidation order, which has also been placed before the police department. The concerned Charter accounts have visited the police station for the last one year for more than 15 times with all the evidence supporting the claims of my clients," the lawyer added. Patil called the case 'baseless and malicious", which was aimed at maligning Kundra and Shetty. He also said appropriate action is being initiated from their side against the perpetrators. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 19:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
