Travel agent's lover who was on run land in police net
Coimbatore: Days after the city police uncovered the murder of a Dubai-based travel agent at a house at Gandhi Maa Nagar, they arrested his lover from Maniyakarampalayam area on Sunday. Police also seized a car and sleeping pills from her house. A police officer identified the arrested person as Sharadha Shanmugam, 32, of FCI Colony Second Street at Gandhi Maa Nagar. Police had issued a lookout notice against her a day ago. The officer said Sharadha, who was working as a receptionist with a firm in Dubai, was having an affair with D Sigamani, 47, of Puliyanthoppu in Thanjavur district. Sigamani was running his own tour and travel firm in Dubai, while his wife Priya, 47, was residing at his hometown. He said Priya was aware of her husband's affair with Sharadha and asked him to end the illicit relationship. According to the officer, Sharadha had reportedly given Rs5 lakh to Sigamani, who spent all the amount in Dubai. "When she asked him to return the amount, he allegedly beat her. Sharadha told the incident to her stepfather Thiyagarajan, who decided to finish off Sigamani." He said Sharadha's husband Gunavel was murdered by Thiyagarajan in 2018 for assaulting her. While the sessions court had sentenced Thiyagarajan to life imprisonment, he went for an appeal before the Madras high court and came out on bail, the officer said. Pointing out that Sharadha and Sigamani had come down to Coimbatore from Dubai on April 22, the officer said Sigamani was murdered by Sharadha, her mother Gomathi, 53, stepfather, elder sister S Neela, 33, relative M Swathi, 26, of Sivagiri in Erode district and henchman G Puthiyavan alias Kutti Thangam, 48, of Thachanallur in Tirunelveli district, on April 25. The body was dumped in the K Paramathy area in Karur district the same day, while Sharadha returned to Dubai from Trichy airport, he said. Except Sharadha, all others involved in the murder were arrested by police after a probe into a man missing a complaint from Priya revealed that it was a case of murder. "Sharadha landed in Chennai airport from Dubai on April 30. Her mobile phone was switched off. We traced her whereabouts to her relative's residence at Maniyakarampalayam in the city and arrested her on Sunday. She has been remanded in judicial custody," the officer said. The case was, meanwhile, transferred to the Saravanampatti investigation wing police from the Peelamedu police on Saturday evening. MSID:: 120874057 413 |

Coimbatore woman arrested for Dubai-based businessman's murder
The police on Sunday arrested a woman from Coimbatore in connection with the murder of a Dubai-based businessman at her residence in the city on April 24. Sharadha Shanmugam, 32, a resident of FCI Colony at Gandhi Maa Nagar in the city, was arrested by Saravanampatti police from the city for murdering D. Sigamani, 47, a native of Puliyanthoppu in Thanjavur. According to police, Sharadha, who was working as a receptionist in Dubai, was allegedly involved in an affair with Sigamani, who ran a travel firm. The two were also involved in financial dealings, which in turn led to disputes between them. Sharadha had also complained to her parents that he was torturing her. Sharadha, her stepfather T. Thiyagarajan, 69, mother Gomathi, 52, sister S. Neela, 33, plotted to murder Sigamani with assistance from Puthiyavan alias Kutti Thangam, a henchman from Tirunelveli, and his relative P. Swathi, 26, the investigators found out. Sigamani arrived at Coimbatore International Airport on April 22 from Abu Dhabi, allegedly after being invited by Sharadha, who also reached the city from Dubai. Sharadha and Thiyagarajan took him to their residence at Gandhi Maa Nagar, where he was served food and drinks laced with sedatives on April 24, police said. He was allegedly murdered that night, and his body was taken to Karur and dumped in an isolated place falling under K. Paramathi Police Station limits. Meanwhile, Sigamani's wife launched a complaint that her husband had not reached home after arriving in Coimbatore from Abu Dhabi. Peelamedu Police in Coimbatore launched an investigation, and upon learning that Sigamani was received by Sharadha and Thiyagrajan upon his arrival in Coimbatore, launched a search for them. Sharadha, however, had returned to Dubai. Sigamani's relatives, who saw her on April 25, began to suspect her role in the disappearance. She returned to Coimbatore on April 30. Police questioned Thiyagarajan, an accused in the murder of Sharadha's husband, Gunavel, in 2018, and he confessed to the murder. A detailed interrogation revealed the roles of all six accused, said the police, who arrested Thiyagarajan on May 1 and four others on May 2. Sharadha, who was absconding since her return, was arrested on Sunday. Sigamani's body, which was buried as that of an unidentified man after a post-mortem at Palamapuram burial ground in Karur, was exhumed on Saturday and a second post-mortem was performed on the remains.
