Will Rishabh Pant Bat On Day 5 Of Manchester Test? Batting Coach Gives Big Update
Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has confirmed Rishabh Pant will bat on the final day of the Manchester Test.
Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will take the crease, if needed, on the final day of the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test in Manchester.
Pant was diagnosed with a metatarsal fracture after being hit on the right foot by England pacer Chris Woakes on the first day of the Test. He has been advised to rest for six weeks, and while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s medical team has asked him not to keep wickets, he has continued to bat.
'Rishabh Pant will bat tomorrow," Kotak said in the press conference after the fourth day's play on Saturday.
Even in India's first innings, he came back to bat at 38 to add 16 more runs to the team's score, including a big six off Jofra Archer. He was welcomed to the ground with a standing ovation by the Old Trafford crowd and defiantly went about his brief stint, even if it meant limping and hobbling for every run.
Though Dhruv Jurel has joined in to keep wickets, ICC rules don't allow him to bat or bowl in Pant's place.
Pant's availability would be a huge boost for India
India could not ask for more from Pant if he can come out to bat on the fifth day. The situation for his team is dire at best. They conceded a confidence-shattering 311-run lead in the first innings and were then reduced to 0/2 by Chris Woakes in the first over, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan going on back-to-back balls.
Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul steadied the ship with a couple of near-flawless knocks. Gill hit 78 (167) while Rahul scored 87 (210) and together they took the team to 174/2 at Stumps. However, the team is still 137 runs in deficit and will need as many contributions as they can find to scrape a draw.
The series is in England's favor by the margin of 2-1 and losing the Test would end India's hopes. If they can remain unbeaten for long enough, it'll allow them the chance to hold England to a draw with a win in the final Test, which begins on July 31.

India captain Shubman Gill with teammates during a net session. (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India's campaign in the ongoing five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England has been marked by constant flux in their playing XI, with captain Shubman Gill leading a side that featured a different combination in every match. As the series reaches its climax at The Oval, India entered the fifth and final Test with four fresh changes, continuing the trend of no unchanged XI throughout the tour. Live Score: India vs England 5th Test Despite the rotation and tactical reshuffling, three players — Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Abhimanyu Easwaran — did not feature in any of the five Tests. While Kuldeep remained on the bench despite some chatter around spin options, Arshdeep and Easwaran are still waiting for their Test debuts. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! India made their intent clear from the start of the series, frequently adapting based on conditions, form, and workload. The rotation of Jasprit Bumrah , who was rested as part of pre-decided workload management, meant at least one change was guaranteed. But the changes went beyond that. India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval? After losing the first Test in Leeds, India made three changes at Edgbaston, replacing Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, and Bumrah with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! However, a narrow 22-run loss there triggered more changes. For the fourth Test in Manchester, Sudharsan, Shardul, and debutant Anshul Kamboj were brought in, while Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, and Akash Deep were left out. India showed great grit to draw the fourth Test and stay alive in the series. But for the final showdown at The Oval, they shuffled again — Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna came in for Pant, Shardul, Kamboj, and Bumrah. Whether these constant changes help or hinder India's bid to level the series 2-2 remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — India's adaptability and bench strength have been thoroughly tested in this gruelling five-Test saga. His failure to convert the starts into big scores as India went 2-1 down led to his exclusion in the fourth Test at Manchester. However, India captain Shubman Gill as the visitors look to level the series. Probably the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is out of the final Test due to a fractured toe, played a role in Nair's inclusion as India wanted more batting strength. Indian fans were divided on coach Gautam Gambhir and Gill's decision to recall Karun Nair. A few pointed out that The Oval Test could be the final lifeline thrown at Nair. 'Karun Nair is lucky to get another chance but it's his last.. If he fails again, it's the end for him,' a fan wrote on X. Another fan pointed out that Nair was included to negate the green top at The Oval. 'Fed up of criticisms around playing too many all-rounders, Gambhir plays one extra specialist batter in Karun Nair. Yes, it covers for a possible first innings batting collapse on a greenish pitch but leaves India with only 3 pacers,' he said.
