#Letter: Who should be KwaDukuza's next mayor
KwaDukuza resident and former KwaDukuza mayor (1996-1998) Siyanda Mhlongo writes:
I write this letter amid growing lobbying for a successor to mayor Muzi Ali Ngidi – should the ANC's KZN Provincial Task Team (PTT) do the right thing and recall him. As a concerned resident, I must voice my view.
Mayor Ngidi is a product of factional manipulation, chiefly by two high-powered individuals who orchestrated the ousting of former mayor Lindy Nhanca and attempted to do the same to municipal manager (MM) Nhlanhla Mdakane. Their goal: turn KwaDukuza into a personal cash cow. Ngidi was selected not for leadership, but for pliability.
Under Ngidi's watch, governance has deteriorated. From bullying officials, misusing municipal resources for personal gain and dodging accountability for the R37m heist, his tenure has been marked by scandal. Events and entertainment have taken precedence over service delivery, with over R8m spent. The MM has faced unwarranted pressure, strikes were weaponised and transparency remains absent.
I believe SAMWU has been mobilised to strike against the MM. This strike has been disguised as a demand for grading, but everyone knows that grading is the responsibility of the bargaining council.
This moment demands a break from factionalism and looting. The ANC must act boldly. I urge the PTT to consider a principled leader, such as Sduduzo Gumede. His record, from leadership in AZASO and SANCO, to his service as KwaDukuza mayor and iLembe councillor, proves his integrity. He is educated, ethical and understands governance.
The ANC must consult widely, not rely solely on compromised internal structures. KwaDukuza needs stability, not another proxy. Appointing Gumede would restore credibility, inspire public trust and halt the looting culture. The time for ethical, competent leadership is now.
We do not need dealers in power, we need leaders.

Home Affairs minister praises child refugee Vincent Tshituka
Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber has praised Springbok Vincent Tshituka and his brother Emmanuel, who recently received their South African identity documents. The siblings came to the country with their parents as refugees after fleeing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On his X account, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber praised Emmanuel and Vincent Tshituka for their new status as South African naturalised citizens. He posted: 'Vincent and Emmanuel Tshituka came to SA as child refugees from DRC. 'Yesterday, I had the honour of watching Vincent make his debut for the Springboks after naturalising them. The latest reminder from our Boks that – no matter our background – we truly are Stronger Together'. Vincent Tshituka, his parents, and his three siblings fled the DRC in 2002 amid political unrest in the country. Recently, the siblings finally received their documentation, which enabled their integration into the national team after attending the Springbok alignment camp earlier this year. In May, the Department of Home Affairs announced that naturalised citizens would now be eligible to receive smart cards. On his Instagram, Vincent Tshituka shared his pride at representing South Africa as a Springbok in his first test match. The national rugby squad played against Italy at Loftus on Saturday, 5 July. Vincent posted: 'All I can say is, thank you, God! It's something I couldn't have even begun to dream of since I was a kid, and now it actually happened. A dream realised! CRAZY!' ‘We don't want him to be a pop star': Allegations by KZN police commissioner Mkhwanazi sparks uproar
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has dismissed Mkhwanazi's damming claims. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's explosive allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior officials within the South African Police Service (Saps) has triggered widespread public and political reaction. Mkhwanazi alleged political interference in police's operations in a briefing held on Sunday. He claimed that the disbandment of the police's political killings task team was due to the unit uncovering links between a powerful drug cartel and high-ranking politicians – including Mchunu – as well as police officers and prosecutors. Th provincial police commissioner has registered a criminal case against Mchunu as a result. Political reaction to Mkhwanazi's claims The allegations have prompted swift responses from various political quarters. ANC Youth League President Collen Malatji criticised Mkhwanazi's approach, accusing him of pursuing populism rather than legal action. 'Days of statements and populism have ended. If you have got evidence on them, arrest them. We not a country of lawlessness. We don't want statements. We don't want press briefings. 'We want people to be arrested. If you are doing crime, you putting drugs in our country, you working with criminals, arrest them,' he told the media at the late former president David Mabuza's home in Mpumalanga. 'We don't want commissioners that are becoming politicians; we commissioners that act. 'His role as a commissioner of police is to arrest those who do crime. Now, we don't want him to be a pop star. 'If he wants to contest politics, he must come to branches of the ANC and contest. But if wants to be a commissioner, he must arrest those who do crime.' ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Mdu Manana also weighed in, saying the ANC would only act on the matter if formal charges were brought forward. 'At this point, it does not warrant a discussion in the NEC or NWC. It is an allegation. Comrade Senzo has not been charged,' Manana said. EFF: Mkhwanazi must be protected The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) responded by calling for protection for Mkhwanazi, especially after his statement that he would 'die for the badge' . The party strongly condemned what it sees as the ANC's transformation of state institutions into tools of criminal enterprise. In a series of tweets, Cameron said he has written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to request an urgent parliamentary debate on the matter. 'These allegations, if proven, paint a troubling picture of a police leadership unable or unwilling to uphold its constitutional duty to combat crime without fear or favour,' he said. Silence is not an option,' he said on Sunday. 'The commander-in-chief, the president of the Republic of South Africa, must take the lead in addressing these serious allegations involving senior Saps management and the minister of police.' 'The minister of police will never allow his integrity, that of the ministry or the Saps at large to be undermined by insinuations made without evidence or due processes, from anyone, including Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi,' the statement reads. The ministry added that Mkhwanazi's public comments would be reviewed and responded to accordingly. 'All these statements made by him in public require an urgent, thorough and transparent investigation, on a proper platform.'
