Oliver Rowland Extends Formula E Points Lead With Strong Monaco Doubleheader
The Nissan Formula E Team driver was strong in the Monaco E-Prix weekend doubleheader on the streets of Monaco this weekend, winning on Saturday and finishing a solid second behind race winner Sebastien Buemi on Sunday.
The 1-2 weekend for Rowland gave him three wins in seven races this season and a commanding lead in the points, as he chases his first Formula E title and the first Formula E title for manufacturer Nissan.
Through seven of 16 scheduled races this season, Rowland has 115 points. Antonio Felix Da Costa is a distant second with 67 points, while defending series champion Pascal Wehrlein is third with 66. A race win is worth 25 points.
On Saturday, Rowland passed pole sitter Taylor Barnard on lap 13, lost the lead briefly to Nyck de Vries, and used his Attack Mode power boost to retake the lead for good on lap 27 on his way to winning by two seconds. De Vries finished second, and Jake Dennis was third after getting hit with a five-second penalty.
Saturday's race was the second to feature Formula E's Pit Boost, where cars pit and received a power-boost charge of their EV batteries before returning to the race.
'You never know what to do with the strategy especially with these Pit Boost races—it's the second race—but we kind of had a plan and we stuck to it," Rowland said. "It was a bit trickier to pass Taylor [Barnard] to be honest, but we kept calm. Even at the end I was pretty worried during that second Attack Mode. I dropped back to fifth and I was behind two Mahindras, and I was like 'right now we need to get cracking', but great job by the team and very well executed."
On Sunday, Rowland started on the pole but finished second to Envision Racing's Buemi, who became a three-time Formula E winner at Monaco. Nick Cassidy of the Jaguar TCS team finished third for his first podium of the season.
Buemi's win wis 14th career triumph in the series and first since 2019 in New York.

Nissan Wants to 'Enhance Performance' In Its EVs. So It's Turning to Formula E, for Some Reason
Nissan's future remains murky as the struggling Japanese automaker attempts to fix its financial outlook . That future could include new Nismo models designed with the help of Nissan's Formula E team. Tommaso Volpe, the head of Nissan's electric racing outfit, revealed the possibility to Autocar in a recent interview. He told the publication that the automaker is considering developing "prototypes" that can help Nismo "enhance the performance of electric cars." However, Nissan hasn't made any official decision. Volpe added that the upcoming Gen4 Formula E cars, for 2026-2027, could provide the potential for transferring technology from electric race cars to future road-going products. The Gen4 cars will feature all-wheel drive with two electric motors producing around 800 horsepower, as per regulations written in collaboration with participating manufacturers, including Nissan . That's more power than what the Ariya Nismo makes. The crossover is a twin-motor AWD electric vehicle, but it produces just 420 hp, and Nissan doesn't even sell it in America. More power and expertise from the racing side can't hurt future electric Nismos, if people want them . Developing prototypes for future road-going Nismo models based on 800-hp race cars could result in something great, but such ideas are often watered down for the masses before production begins. However, as exciting as Nismo is for consumers and the brand, Nissan has other things to focus on first. Whatever Happened To The Affordable New Car?
New vehicle prices are showing no end to their meteoric rise, with the average manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) now standing at over $51,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. That represents a 2.3% boost over the past year and is well over $10,000 more than the average car cost in 2020. And there's still no telling how much new-vehicle prices will increase moving forward with President Trump's tariffs being levied on imported cars, steel and components. Aside from inflation and changing market forces, today's stratospheric new-vehicle prices can be attributed to how they're being equipped. The days are long gone since an 'economy car' meant one that came with manual locks, roll-up windows and just an AM/FM radio. Today it's tough to find a given model on a dealer's lot that isn't loaded with profit-padding perks that were until only recently limited to top-shelf luxury cars. With the Kia Rio and Mitsubishi Mirage having left the U.S. market the number of cars that start at less than $20,000 is down to just one, the Nissan Versa at $17,190, though one would be hard-pressed to find a base model with a manual transmission in a given dealer's inventory. What's more, Cars Commerce reports that the number of new vehicles selling for under $30,000 is now down to 13.6% of the market as compared to 38% in pre-pandemic 2019. And since 92% of the lowest-stickered vehicles are imported, there's likely to be even fewer sub-$30,000 models up for grabs in a tariff-tempered economy. If the Future Attribute Demand Study (FADS) conducted by the research firm AutoPacific is any indication, automakers may need to return to the days of basic transportation by building more models and trims that eschew some flashier new-vehicle features for the sake of maintaining more-reasonable MSRPs. The company surveyed over 14,000 new vehicle intenders to gauge their interest in more than 160 current automotive features and found that shoppers looking to spend no more than $35,000 on a new vehicle are less likely to demand widely offered upscale features than more affluent buyers. 'Front wheel drive, base stereos, cloth seats with various manual adjustment, and analog gauges are 'in,' for these more frugal shoppers,' says Robby DeGraff, AutoPacific's manager of product and consumer insights, 'so the array of standard equipment found on entry- and mid-level trims of today's popular vehicles within the $25,000 to $35,000 price range may need to be reexamined as consumers tighten their belts in the face of economic uncertainty.' The study determined that more price-conscious consumers remain open to consider a conventionally powered sedan that sticks close to the basics, with cloth upholstery, manual seat adjustments, an analog gauge cluster and easy-to-use physical buttons and dials. They say they can do without navigation, elaborate interactive displays and nearly-autonomous driving features. Those who can afford more than $35,000 say they favor more-fanciful amenities like driver profile settings, a household 110v outlet, and rear-window sunshades. On the other hand, shoppers in both price ranges said they items like want wireless charging pads, heated and ventilated front seats and potentially life-saving active safety features like automatic emergency front and rear braking and lane- change assist. The least sought-after features among both groups include premium-branded audio systems, head-up displays and subscription-based immersive services. While market demands may trigger a renaissance of more basically-equipped new cars, trucks and SUVs for the sake of cash-strapped buyers, don't expect to see crank-up windows, front bench seats, cigarette lighters or steering-column shifters returning to the market any time soon. In the meantime, here's a list of the new cars and SUVs for 2025 that can still be found starting for less than $25,000, not including the destination charge, taxes, fees and options:

Nissan begins talks with union to cut jobs at European regional office
By Daniel Leussink TOKYO (Reuters) -Nissan Motor has begun negotiations with the union representing staff at its European regional office about changes that will include job losses, according to a company document and internal emails. The struggling Japanese automaker, which has embarked on a major restructuring, confirmed it has entered consultations with staff representatives at Nissan Automotive Europe, its regional office in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France, which has around 560 staff. The office, which also oversees Nissan's operations for Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, is set to undergo major changes, according to a person with knowledge of the issue who declined to be identified. Management and the union agreed to discuss voluntary redundancies before any forced layoffs, the document seen by Reuters showed. Talks are expected to conclude by October 20, with full details to be shared with staff in November, the document and the emails said. "We are working diligently and respectfully with all parties to ensure that this process is conducted with care, transparency and in full compliance with legal requirements," Massimiliano Messina, Nissan's vice chairperson for the region, said in a July 31 email. Messina also said in the email that no decisions had yet been made. After taking the helm in April, CEO Ivan Espinosa announced a sweeping restructuring that includes cutting about 15% of Nissan's workforce, slashing global production capacity by nearly 30% to 2.5 million vehicles and the number of its manufacturing sites to 10 from 17. The automaker, which has seen weak sales in China and the U.S. compound pain brought on from an expansionist strategy, hopes to save 500 billion yen ($3.4 billion) with the restructuring. In recent developments, Nissan said last week it would stop output at its Civac plant in Mexico by March next year. It also said it will end car production at its Oppama plant in Japan by March 2028 and at Nissan-Shatai's Shonan factory by March 2027. The automaker employs nearly 19,000 people across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, with close to 60% based in Europe, according to a diversity report published in October 2024.
