Stoffel Vandoorne on Tokyo E-Prix triumph: 'The plan perfectly played in our hands'
It cannot be just a coincidence that Maserati MSG Racing driver Stoffel Vandoorne started from the 14th position on the grid and went on to win the Tokyo E-Prix Round 8. He even managed to beat Nissan's Oliver Rowland, who had started from pole. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Vandoorne shined while others struggled with poor visibility, a slippery track, and grip issues as it rained cats and dogs during the Tokyo race. Not only that, he also recovered from a spin on the wet track to cross the finish line first. The Tokyo winner says it's all because of how their plan fell in place to perfection. Stoffel Vandoorne shares their strategy for Tokyo race Stoffel Vandoorne revealed that their winning strategy involved a calculated risk of taking the Pit Boost early in the race, which could have worked in their favor if there had been a race stoppage, allowing them to save time during the gap. "It was not an easy race, but a lot of opportunities with the rain and the management. We kind of gamble a little bit with our strategy but it was also calculated at the same time. The plan perfectly played in our hands, and the chances of this happening in Formula E are very, very slim,' Vandoorne told Formula E in an interview. "It was difficult because I had to manage so many things. I was on the radio with my engineer in between laps and he was giving me advice on the gap that I had to Oliver (Rowland) to make sure I was safe enough with my energy. I was struggling, and I was down to 10% at some point and I had to bring the car home so there was a lot of management to do," he added. Vandoorne moved to Maserati MSG Racing last season and is in love with his new team. Talking about the same, he said, "I'm just happy for the team, for myself, it's been a little while. They are such a good group of people, some familiar faces from the past as well, their vibe is super cool, their base is Monaco and that is my home as well. They are making my life easy." Stoffel Vandoorne on clinching long-awaited Tokyo E-Prix Round 8 victory: 'I'm just super happy our plan paid off'
Image credit: Stoffel Vandoorne/Instagram Maserati MSG Racing 's Stoffel Vandoorne returned to the spotlight after three years by securing victory in the rain-affected Tokyo E-Prix Round 8 this weekend. He completed the Pit Boost at just the right time during an incident-packed race to clinch his first win since the Monaco E-Prix in Season 8 , 2022. He comfortably surpassed reigning Formula E champion Oliver Rowland to cross the finish line first. Stoffel Vandoorne wins Tokyo E-Prix Round 8 The Belgian driver crossed the finish line to win Maserati MSG Racing's first race of the season after building a lead of over 30 seconds on Oliver Rowland of Nissan after exiting the Pit Boost pit stops on Nissan's homeground. The team's plan was to jump for their mandatory Pit Boost stop early by burning through their usable energy quick-fast, hoping for a subsequent stoppage to the race - made more likely in tricky, soaking conditions at Big Sight. Sharing the details of his strategy, Vandoorne said after the win, 'Super happy that our plan actually worked! It was a very bold and aggressive strategy decision to burn a lot of energy at the beginning so we could open our pit window early. Then obviously we were the first ones to pit and we got a bit lucky with the red flag, and the field got bunched up again. After the restart, it was very difficult to bring the car home - a lot of management to do, giving comms to the team and making sure I had enough energy to make it to the flag. ' 'I knew exactly what was going on, I knew that I would inherit the lead at some point and I just had to bring it home. I was probably a little bit too safe at some points, and made a couple of mistakes that shouldn't have happened. In the end we brought it home and I'm just super happy our plan paid off,' he added. Oliver Rowland Extends Formula E Points Lead With Strong Monaco Doubleheader
Oliver Rowland is threatening to make the ABB FIA Formula E season a runaway. The Nissan Formula E Team driver was strong in the Monaco E-Prix weekend doubleheader on the streets of Monaco this weekend, winning on Saturday and finishing a solid second behind race winner Sebastien Buemi on Sunday. The 1-2 weekend for Rowland gave him three wins in seven races this season and a commanding lead in the points, as he chases his first Formula E title and the first Formula E title for manufacturer Nissan. Through seven of 16 scheduled races this season, Rowland has 115 points. Antonio Felix Da Costa is a distant second with 67 points, while defending series champion Pascal Wehrlein is third with 66. A race win is worth 25 points. On Saturday, Rowland passed pole sitter Taylor Barnard on lap 13, lost the lead briefly to Nyck de Vries, and used his Attack Mode power boost to retake the lead for good on lap 27 on his way to winning by two seconds. De Vries finished second, and Jake Dennis was third after getting hit with a five-second penalty. Saturday's race was the second to feature Formula E's Pit Boost, where cars pit and received a power-boost charge of their EV batteries before returning to the race. 'You never know what to do with the strategy especially with these Pit Boost races—it's the second race—but we kind of had a plan and we stuck to it," Rowland said. "It was a bit trickier to pass Taylor [Barnard] to be honest, but we kept calm. Even at the end I was pretty worried during that second Attack Mode. I dropped back to fifth and I was behind two Mahindras, and I was like 'right now we need to get cracking', but great job by the team and very well executed." On Sunday, Rowland started on the pole but finished second to Envision Racing's Buemi, who became a three-time Formula E winner at Monaco. Nick Cassidy of the Jaguar TCS team finished third for his first podium of the season. Buemi's win wis 14th career triumph in the series and first since 2019 in New York. Image credit: Formula E Oliver Rowland showed who's the boss on the first day of the Monaco E-Prix . The Nissan driver went on to win the Round 6 on Saturday, registering his third win of the 2024–25 Formula E World Championship . The 32-year-old hinted that they would have been enjoying the champagne after the sweet victory but since this is a double header, the party will have to wait till Sunday. The Round 7 of the Miami E-Prix is scheduled on Sunday. Oliver Rowland on his winning strategy Talking about his quick strategy that resulted in a win for him, Oliver Rowland said, 'You never know what to do with the strategy especially with these Pit Boost races - it's the second race but we kind of had a plan and we stuck to it. It was a bit trickier to pass Taylor [Barnard] to be honest, but we kept calm - even at the end I was pretty worried during that second Attack Mode: I dropped back to fifth and I was behind two Mahindra's, and I was like 'right now we need to get cracking', but great job by the team and very well executed.' The 32-year-old added, 'I was thinking Taylor was pushing the barriers of the rules at some points, but fair play to him - in the end we got the job done so it doesn't really matter. We've started the season really well, but it feels a bit different now. Normally you'd be looking forward to the champagne but you've already got one eye on tomorrow.' A key factor in Rowland's success was the strategic deployment of Pit Boost by Nissan, allowing him to overtake polesitter NEOM McLaren driver Taylor Barnard on Lap 13. Despite briefly losing the lead to Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries on Lap 26, Rowland masterfully utilised his final Attack Mode on Lap 27 to reclaim the lead, ultimately winning the race by a comfortable two-second margin. He is already leading the Formula E Drivers' Standings this year, and the much-awaited win adds to his score. Nyck de Vries of Mahindra Racing secured the second spot on the podium. Andretti driver Jake Dennis managed to claim the third spot despite a 5-second penalty. Monaco E-Prix Round 6 highlights The race began with qualifying winner NEOM McLaren's Taylor Barnard on pole position, followed by good friend — Nissan's Oliver Rowland — and then Cupra Kiro driver Dan Ticktum, who topped both free practice sessions. The race ended early for TAG Heuer Porsche driver António Félix da Costa, who crashed into the wall and retired. He remains the only Formula E driver in the last five years to have won both pole and the race in the same event — in 2021. He had finished third in the previous race in Miami. — FIAFormulaE (@FIAFormulaE) Mitch Evans of Jaguar TCS Racing, who won the last Monaco E-Prix, came to a halt during the race and struggled to get going again, losing precious time as others overtook him. Oliver Rowland was among the first to use Attack Mode and established his dominance in the race. Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries and TAG Heuer Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein came close to Rowland when others took the mandatory Pit Boost. Soon after, Jaguar TCS Racing's Nick Cassidy moved up to challenge for second position. Where did pole winner Taylor Barnard go? He crashed into the wall and was seen reversing his vehicle to rejoin the race. Andretti driver Jake Dennis could have secured a higher podium finish, but he was hit with a 5-second penalty for overspeeding during the full-course yellow when António Félix da Costa's car was being removed from the crash site.
