CF Montréal dismisses head coach Laurent Courtois after winless start to MLS season
CF Montréal has fired head coach Laurent Courtois after a poor start to the Major League Soccer season.
The club announced the move Monday, two days after Montreal (0-4-1) lost 3-0 at Nashville SC. Assistant coach Marco Donadel will take over on an interim basis.
Montreal is still seeking its first win this season and hasn't scored since a season-opening 3-2 loss to Atlanta United.
Courtois was hired on Jan. 9, 2024, after two seasons as head coach of Columbus Crew 2, the reserve team of MLS's Columbus Crew.
The 46-year-old native of Lyon, France, helped Montreal reach the Eastern Conference wild-card round in his first season at the helm, losing at home to Atlanta.
Montreal next plays Saturday at Chicago Fire as a season-opening seven-game road trip nears an end. The team plays its home opener April 12 against Charlotte FC.

Resilient Vancouver Whitecaps blank nine-man Seattle Sounders 3-0 to set club record
VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps overcame a string of adversity to blank their regional rivals, the Seattle Sounders, 3-0 on Sunday. The result extended the 'Caps (10-1-5) unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer play to a club record 11 games. Homegrown talent Jeevan Badwal notched his first MLS goal in the 40th minute, Mexican striker Daniel Rios scored to cushion the lead in the 70th, and veteran striker Damir Kreilach put away a penalty kick in the 88th. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka recorded his eighth clean sheet of the season. The Sounders (7-6-5) went down to nine men early in the second half following a pair of red cards. Seven of Vancouver's 11 starters were listed as questionable for the game after about half of the team came down with a gastrointestinal illness following the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in Mexico City on June 1. The 'Caps were also without nine additional players who have been called up to their national teams, and star attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld, who remains sidelined with a knee injury. Vancouver signed seven Whitecaps FC 2 players to short-term agreements Sunday to bolster their ranks. Six of the players were on the bench at the start of Sunday's game, including central midfielders Jackson Castro and Antoine Coupland, centre back Adrian Pelayo, left back Daniel Russo, right back Nikola Djordjevic and striker John Selemani. The visitors came close to opening the scoring in the 31st minute when midfielder Pedro de la Vega sent a ball skittering along the turf from the top of the penalty area. His shot appeared to deflect off the leg of a Whitecaps defender and sail just wide of the far post. Nine minutes later, a 'Caps rookie got his side on the board. Wing back Edier Ocampo sliced a ball to J.C. Ngando at the top of the six-yard box and he ticked it on to Badwal. The 19-year-old Whitecaps academy product from Surrey, B.C., stuck out his right leg just in time to redirect the ball in past Seattle 'keeper Stefan Frei to make it 1-0. The Sounders controlled 65.1 per cent of possession across the first half and held a 6-5 edge in shots, but the Whitecaps registered the lone on-target shot. Vancouver came into the second half with renewed energy and pressed to create chances. Seattle appeared to get frustrated and the emotions boiled over in the 52nd minute when wing back Nouhou grabbed his Vancouver counterpart Mathias Laborda around the neck and hauled him down as Laborda charged toward the Sounders net. Referee Ricardo Fierro pulled the red card from his pocket, leaving the visitors with 10 men. The 'Caps briefly appeared to double their lead in the 53rd minute when centre back Bjorn Utvik booted a shot in off a corner kick. The goal was quickly called off because Vancouver defender Ranko Veselinovic made contact with Frei as he leapt for a header, hauling the goaltender down and impeding his ability to stop Utvik's shot. Seattle ran into more trouble in the 55th minute when centre back Jonathan Bell made contact with Priso as he charged up the field. Fierro once again pulled out the red card. The Sounders players argued the call, but Bell soon walked off to the locker rooms, leaving Seattle with just nine players on the pitch. Rios boosted Vancouver's lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute, collecting a pass from Priso at the top of the penalty area and firing a right-footed shot in from the top of the penalty area for his second goal of the season. Ocampo had a prime chance to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute. In alone, the wing back twisted to blast a jumping right-footed shot on target, but Frei dove to punch the ball away. Priso, too, had a chance in the 76th minute with a high shot that appeared poised to sneak in below the crossbar. But the Seattle netminder leapt up and touched it over to keep the score 2-0. MLS players' union says dispute over Club World Cup compensation is ongoing
Major League Soccer and its players' union remain at odds over compensation for the players with the three MLS teams taking part in the Club World Cup. The Seattle Sounders, LAFC and Inter Miami are the only MLS clubs among the 32 teams playing in the Club World Cup, which starts Saturday. Each team will earn $9.55 million as a club for participating in the tournament, with a chance to win additional prize money based on performance. The Major League Soccer Players Association said Sunday that the league issued a proposal Friday that did not include any additional participation bonuses for the players and offered 'below-standard' back-end compensation. The union also said the league asked for unrelated concessions to the collective bargaining agreement. Currently, there is a provision of the collective bargaining agreement that caps the amount of prize money that can go to players at $1 million. The MLSPA believes the players are entitled to a bigger share of the funds. 'The timing, substance and retaliatory nature of the proposal sends a clear message: MLS does not respect or value players' efforts with regard to this tournament,' the MLSPA said in statement Sunday. 'Although not surprised, the players and the MLSPA are deeply disappointed by this message.' Major League Soccer issued a statement Sunday to clarify its position. 'As the Seattle Sounders FC, Inter Miami CF, and the Los Angeles Football Club prepare to compete in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, Major League Soccer has agreed to voluntarily provide additional performance-based compensation to players from the three participating clubs,' the league said. 'MLS has proposed an enhanced structure for the Club World Cup to reward both participation and competitive achievement in the tournament. In addition to the guaranteed $1 million per team for qualifying, 20 percent of all prize money earned from the group stage onward would be allocated to players. If an MLS club wins the Club World Cup, its players could collectively receive more than $24 million in performance bonuses.' The statement went on to say that MLS owners believe that performance-based incentives are appropriate given the expanded format and increased prize pool for the tournament. 'The League values the continued dedication and commitment of its players and looks forward to supporting them as they represent their clubs — and Major League Soccer — on the global stage this summer.' The veteran running back was among Toronto's final cuts released Sunday. CFL teams had to make their final roster moves by 10 p.m. ET on Saturday night. The 2025 season opens Thursday night with the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Toronto begins its campaign Friday night on the road versus the Montreal Alouettes. Saskatchewan, Ottawa and Montreal released their final cuts Saturday. Carey, 32, ran for team-high 1,060 yards (5.5-yard average) with seven touchdowns last season, his first with Toronto. The five-foot-nine, 215-pound Carey, who earned a '18 Grey Cup ring with Calgary, added 37 catches for 356 yards and a TD while appearing in all 18 regular-season games. Carey also appeared in all three of Toronto's playoff games, rushing for 79 yards and a TD on 15 carries in the club's 41-24 Grey Cup win over Winnipeg. He re-signed with the club in the off-season. 'It's a tough day,' Toronto head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said of final cut-down. 'I wish I could keep them all … it's just unfortunate we've got to make some tough decisions, that's professional football. 'You've got to go with what you think is best for your football club.' American Deonta McMahon, entering his third season with Toronto, is expected to take Carey's spot in Toronto's backfield. Also among the 18 players released by Toronto were quarterback Cameron Dukes and veteran defensive back Ciante Evans, both Americans. Dukes made nine starts last season for Toronto, posting a 4-5 record, as incumbent Chad Kelly missed the club's first nine regular-season games due to suspension. The six-foot, 200-pound Dukes completed 143-of-199 passes (71.9 per cent) for 1,444 yards with seven touchdowns, and six interceptions while adding 321 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Evans, 32, signed with Toronto in the off-season after registering 31 tackles and two interceptions in 13 regular-season games last season with the B.C. Lions. Toronto placed running back Jyran Mitchell, receiver Calvin Turner Jr. and Dorian Anderson, offensive linemen Anim Dankwah and Hampton Ergle, defensive linemen Greg Reaves, Da'Marcus Johnson and Brevin Allen, linebacker Stephen Smith, defensive back Delonte Hood and kicker Alfredo Gachuz-Lozada on the practice roster. Quarterback Logan Bonner and receiver Cam Echols, both Americans, were among Calgary's final cuts. Bonner spent two seasons with the Stampeders and started the club's 37-16 loss to Edmonton last year, completing 21-of-36 passes for 284 yards and five interceptions. The six-foot, 195-pound Echols had 31 catches for 363 yards and four touchdowns in 12 regular-season games last season while also registering 12 punt returns for 109 yards and eight kickoff returns for 181 yards. The 30-year-old also spent time with Hamilton (2018) and B.C. (2019). Receivers Daylen Baldwin, Kaylon Horton and Vyshonne Janusas, linebackers Nicky Farinaccio and Kelechi Anyalebechi, defensive backs Marloshawn Franklin Jr. and Anthony Johnson Jr., offensive lineman Preston Nichols, defensive lineman Shaun Peterson Jr., kicker Jordan Noyes and punter Mark Vassett earned practice-roster spots. American defensive back Marcus Lewis, who started eight-of-11 games last season with Edmonton, was among 27 players released by the squad. Lewis registered 19 tackles, a special-teams tackle, and an interception in 2024, his second campaign with the Elks after playing previously with Ottawa (2021). The Hamilton Tiger-Cats released 24 players, including Canadian receivers Luther Hakunavanhu and Bruno Labelle. Hakunavanhu, who began his CFL career with Calgary (2021-23), had nine catches for 171 yards and four TDs in eight games last season. Labelle was entering his first season with Hamilton after appearing in 29 games over the two previous campaigns with Saskatchewan.
