7 top new movies and shows to stream this weekend on Netflix, Hulu and more (July 25-27)
This week offers a little bit of everything. "Happy Gilmore 2" tees up a sequel nearly three decades in the making, while "Materialists" puts a fresh take on the rom-com scene.

Happy Gilmore is back, and not much has changed — he's still yelling at golf balls and swinging like he's trying to kill someone. Nearly 30 years after the original, Adam Sandler returns to tee off, this time to help pay for his daughter's ballet school.
Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald are back, too, and Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce somehow ended up in the mix. Plot details are thin, but based on the trailer, we're in for a mix of rage and ridiculousness.

This sweeping limited series traces the remarkable journey of a boy who refuses to let the world write his story for him. Born into bondage on a Barbados sugar plantation, young Wash (played by Eddie Karanja and later Ernest Kingsley Jr.) finds an unlikely ally in a quirky inventor (Tom Ellis) who helps him escape.
What follows is a far-reaching adventure, complete with flying machines, bounty hunters and Arctic expeditions. Through it all, Wash learns some painful truths about freedom. Adapted from Esi Edugyan's celebrated novel, the series is anchored by Sterling K. Brown as both narrator and protector.

Dream (Tom Sturridge) has broken the ultimate taboo for the Endless — he took the life of his own son. Now, in volume 2, the consequences come crashing down. The Kindly Ones are on the hunt, the Dreaming is falling apart and Morpheus must face the heavy price of compassion.

Grab a cocktail to toast one last trip to "Acapulco." In its final season, the bilingual comedy jumps between present-day Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) trying to bring Las Colinas back to life, and 1986, where young Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) is pulling every trick in the book to reclaim the hotel's top spot in Acapulco.
This is a paradise filled with neon, nostalgia and bittersweet decisions. Máximo will have his hands full in both timelines.

With little explanation, he shows up in the beginning of the film as a neighbor of Happy's and later moves into the house. He plays an uncle-like character in Happy's family and has stellar comedic chemistry with the rest of the cast. Ken Jennings as Himself Early in the film, Happy is surprised to see himself as an answer on an episode of 'Jeopardy.' The presence of Ken Jennings on television provides an aura of authenticity, as the game-show host provides Happy's name to his stumped contestants. Steve Buscemi as the NeighborGiven that Buscemi has previously appeared in 'Billy Madison,' 'Big Daddy' and 'Grown Ups,' among other Adam Sandler movies, it's no surprise that he pops up in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' This time, he plays a neighbor who dances on his porch and in the streets near Happy's house. It's weird and random and exactly what one would expect out of this legendary character actor. Post Malone as DJ Omar GoshDuring the film's climax, the final tournament commentators are joined by a lavishly dressed fictional celebrity called DJ Omar Gosh. He's played by actual musical artist Post Malone, who fans will undoubtedly recognize despite all his accessories. Eminem as Donald the original 'Happy Gilmore,' the late Joe Flaherty played Donald: a heckler hired to antagonize Happy by yelling 'Jackass' during his backswing. In the sequel, rapper Eminem takes up the mantle as Donald's son, who yells the same slander in a pivotal and hilarious scene. This is the second time Sandler and Eminem have shared the frame, as the two also riffed to spectacular comedic effect in 2009's 'Funny People.' Will Zalatoris as Himself / Grown-Up Blonde CaddieProfessional golfer Will Zalatoris appears as more than just himself in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' It's eventually revealed that he is the grown-up version of the young blonde caddie that Happy chokes out in the first film. Still angry with Happy for his violent outburst, Zalatoris has grown up to be a rival of Happy's on the golf course. Scottie Scheffler as HimselfAnother professional golfer who was conspicuously present throughout the story, Scottie Scheffler golfs alongside Happy up through the film's championship tournament. Framed as a partner and ally to Happy on the green, he brings a sense of realism to Happy's team. Bubba Watson as HimselfUnlike Scheffler, professional golfer Bubba Watson aligns himself with the enemy golf team in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' He's often seen sharing the screen with Haley Joel Osment's character, a golfer who's undergone an operation to enhance his swing and advance the new rival league. Seth Waugh as HimselfSeth Waugh served as CEO of the PGA for six years up through 2024. Like the athletes in the film, Waugh brings authenticity to the world of 'Happy Gilmore 2,' playing himself and overseeing the on-screen competition. However, he is just one of many sports commentators and analysts to grace the film. Across montages and key scenes, Stephen A. Smith, Chris Berman, and Jim Gray all appear to lend their expertise on Happy's return to the green. An Unlikely Trio of Golfers Early in the film, before Happy returns to the pros, he plays a round of golf with a group of regular people. Oddly enough, those 'regular people' are played by Eric André, Margaret Qualley and Martin Herlihy. These three sharing a scene — let alone a green — with Adam Sandler may not have been on anyone's bingo card for 'Happy Gilmore 2,' but the sequence is filled with memorable moments and laughs aplenty. Unlikely FBI PartnersAt the end of the film, a team of FBI agents raid Hal L's Alcoholics Anonymous front. Leading that team are an unlikely duo of Scott Mescudi (a.k.a. rapper Kid Cudi) and Sarah Sarandos (a.k.a. the daughter of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos). Of all the surprise appearances in the film, this might be the least expected. The Sandler FamilyAdam Sandler is no stranger to filling his movies with his friends, but in 'Happy Gilmore 2,' he leans more into family. Both of his daughters, Sunny and Sadie Sandler, have prominent roles, the former portraying Happy's daughter Vienna Gilmore, who is his muse for returning to the golf course. Otherwise, Sandler's wife Jackie plays Vienna's dance instructor and his mother and mother-in-law also make small appearances. The Stiller FamilyAdam Sandler wasn't the only star to bring his kids into the cast of 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Ben Stiller's children Ella and Quinn both have minor roles in the film. Ella plays a liquor store cashier who Happy has a confrontation with and Quinn plays one of the caddies. NHL GuestsProfessional golfers aren't the only real-world athletes represented in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Former NHL players Chris Chelios and Sean Avery also make appearances as a pair of henchmen. Because Happy has origins on the ice, it's only natural that the film bring in some hockey stars to play a couple intimidating goons. Copious Comedians in Bit PartsA handful of Adam Sandler regulars and other comedians come and go throughout 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Jon Lovitz shows up for a humorous scene on a driving range; Nick Swardson appears in a flashback sequence; Jim Downey plays a tournament starter; and Marcello Hernandez plays Esteban, an eccentric second to Bad Bunny's caddie who's willing to do shifty tasks for a quick buck. Also, Rob Schneider rides by during a fantasy montage, yelling his signature line, 'You can do it!' More Professional GolfersIn addition to John Daly, Scottie Scheffler, Bubba Watson and Will Zalatoris, an abundance of current and former professional golfers populate 'Happy Gilmore 2.' In scenes in the clubhouse and on the course, Jack Nicklaus, Keegan Bradley, Fred Couples, Bryson Dechambeau, Sir Nick Faldo, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Charles Howell III, Brooks Koepka, Hunter Mahan, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Corey Pavin, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Lee Trevino and Charley Hull all appear as themselves. In MemoriamLastly, 'Happy Gilmore 2' pays homage to its predecessor. Adam Sandler Remembers Cameron Boyce In Subtle ‘Happy Gilmore 2' Tribute
Netflix released 'Happy Gilmore 2' on July 25, and the Adam Sandler sequel is filled end to end with celebrity cameos. Amidst all of the uproarious surprise appearances, the film also offers a subtle nod to late actor Cameron Boyce, who starred alongside Sandler in 'Grown Ups' and 'Grown Ups 2' before his untimely death in 2019. 'Happy Gilmore 2's' tribute to Boyce comes in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment when Sandler's titular character checks in for a tee time early in the film. When Happy approaches the desk, one of the workers is watching TV on his laptop and observant viewers will notice that the footage is from an episode of 'Jessie' featuring Boyce. It is a discreet reference, but one that numerous viewers have noticed and brought attention to on social media. Boyce was supposed to appear alongside Sandler in the 2020 film 'Hubie Halloween.' Instead, the film is dedicated to his memory, with the credits mentioning, 'In loving memory of Cameron Boyce. Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.' Boyce was a child actor who came up on Disney Channel, starring in the sitcom 'Jessie' as well as the 'Descendants' movies. He also appeared in the 2008 films 'Mirrors' and 'Eagle Eye,' before playing Sandler's on-screen son in both 'Grown Ups' films. Boyce passed away at the age of twenty due to an epileptic seizure in his sleep. His performances in 'Descendants 3,' 'Mrs. Fletcher,' 'Paradise City' and 'Runt' were all released posthumously. Shortly after Boyce's death, Sandler also posted on Twitter, 'Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken.
