Diet soda might be making you hungrier

The idea that diet sodas can help you lose weight is becoming increasingly complicated as emerging research suggests they may confuse the brain—and trigger an urge to eat. Millions of people reach for diet sodas each day to reduce sugar intake, manage their weight, or make healthier choices. But new research suggests these artificially sweetened drinks may do more than satisfy a sweet tooth—they may also be quietly rewiring how the brain regulates hunger.
Artificial sweeteners have long been controversial for their possible link to cancer and poor gut health. Yet some studies suggest that sweeteners like sucralose may stimulate the regions of the brain involved in hunger signaling, potentially triggering the urge to eat. Whether that leads to actual weight gain is less clear, but the idea that diet sodas support weight loss is becoming increasingly complicated. What does sucralose do differently than sugar
When you eat or drink something with calories—such as a sugary soda—your body initiates a cascade of responses designed to manage energy. Glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream, your gut releases hormones like GLP-1 and leptin, and your pancreas produces insulin. Together, these signals tell the hypothalamus—the brain's hunger-regulating command center—that energy has arrived, helping you feel full and satisfied.

But that feedback loop breaks down when artificial sweeteners like sucralose enter the picture. Such changes can be observed through functional MRI scans showing activity in the hypothalamus and its connections to other brain regions, says Kathleen Page, an endocrinologist and director of the Diabetes and Obesity Institute at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. 'We think [the activity] may be a biomarker of satiety signaling,' she says. Eating glucose typically causes a decrease in hypothalamic activity, which is associated with feelings of fullness. Sucralose, an artificial sweetener, seems to increase the activity in the brain region instead.
Page's team tested this by giving 75 young adults beverages sweetened with either sucralose, sucrose (table sugar), or plain water. They found that sucralose-sweetened beverages increased blood flow to the hypothalamus and resulted in increased hunger, while sucrose-sweetened beverages reduced blood flow and hunger. And unlike sucrose, they found that artificial sweeteners didn't increase levels of insulin and GLP-1 in the blood—some of the hormones linked to promoting satiety. Previous studies on mice show similar results.
One possible explanation? A disconnect between taste and nutrition. Sucralose is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar but contains no calories. 'When the brain gets a signal of sweetness, it's anticipating that nutrients will follow,' Page says. But when they don't, the mismatch might stimulate appetite 'because the brain is still looking for that nutrient,' Page says, adding that this phenomenon has been observed in mice, which crave more sugary foods after they've consumed an artificial sweetener. Artificial sweeteners don't just affect the brain; they affect metabolism too. A 2020 study found that when sucralose was consumed alongside carbohydrates—which are broken down into glucose in the body—it impaired glucose metabolism by making participants less sensitive to insulin. 'By adding an artificial sweetener, you change the metabolic fate of the glucose,' says Dana Small, a neuroscientist and psychologist specializing in metabolism at McGill University in Montreal and lead researcher of the study.
Although artificial sweeteners appear to disrupt these signals, the evidence on whether that leads to weight gain is mixed. Several large cohort studies have linked artificial sweeteners with an increased risk of obesity and weight gain. One recent study found those who drank diet beverages daily were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Other new results show that high consumption of diet beverages and saccharin (but not aspartame or sucralose) is linked to a greater risk of developing diabetes. Another 20-year study found people accumulated more body fat if they were more frequent consumers of sweeteners.

But correlation isn't causation. 'People who drink artificial sweeteners are more likely to be thinking about their weight,' Small says. 'Is the artificial sweetener causing the weight gain, or is it the weight gain causing the artificial sweetener use?' Still, international agencies have incorporated these results into their health recommendations. The World Health Organization cautioned against using artificial sweeteners for weight management in 2023, citing evidence that linked them to increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Randomized controlled trials have also produced conflicting results. Some show that replacing sugary drinks with artificial sweeteners, especially as part of a weight loss program, can lead to a modest amount of weight loss. But other evidence shows the opposite. Results presented at this year's American Diabetes Association meeting showed women with type 2 diabetes who swapped diet drinks with water were twice as likely to go into remission. They also lost about 4.5 pounds more than those who continued drinking the diet beverages. The role of hunger—and why it might not matter
Even as studies show that artificial sweeteners may stimulate appetite, some researchers argue that hunger itself may not be the main reason we eat.
'It's not so common that we actually eat because we're hungry and stop eating because we're full,' says Richard D. Mattes, a nutrition scientist at Purdue University in Indiana. Boredom, craving a sensory experience, or being in a social setting are among the other reasons people might start eating. 'Hunger is a relatively minor contributor to that,' he says.

Ideally, everyone would drink plain water. 'But the issue is, people choose to use a beverage to satisfy other desires for sensory stimulation,' Mattes says. If a low-calorie sweetened beverage replaces an energy-rich beverage and helps people comply with a diet, then it serves a function, he added.
Still, others urge more caution given the mounting evidence on the adverse health effects of the beverages. Page counsels her patients with diabetes against both sugary drinks and artificially sweetened ones, given how sweet taste, regardless of the source, may increase appetite or trigger cravings. For those who can't give up the fizz of soda, she recommends naturally flavored carbonated waters instead.
'The bottom line is that artificial sweeteners are not inert like they were once thought to be,' Small says. 'And I think the bulk of the evidence suggests that they're not healthy.'

Restaurant chains are joining in on the protein frenzy, hoping to encourage diners to pay more for extra macronutrients during a time when many consumers aren't spending as much. From "gym bros" to users of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, many Americans are trying to add more protein to their diets, with the goal of building or maintaining their muscle mass and feeling more satiated after meals. Moreover, diet trends that don't emphasize protein intake, such as the ketogenic diet, have fallen out of favor. "A lot of younger consumers are more proactive about their health habits, so they're looking for ways to support health now but also to support their health in the future," said Julia Mills, a food and drink analyst for market research firm Mintel. "Generation Alpha, Gen Z, millennials — these consumers are very active on social media, so they're constantly being fed this message that you need more protein, and protein helps you gain muscle and makes you stronger." Roughly a third of consumers said they loved high protein in the second quarter of 2025, up from 24% three years ago, according to Datassential, which tracks restaurant menus and consumer preferences. The trend has fueled a protein takeover in grocery store aisles, from protein-packed Eggo waffles to Khloe Kardashian's Khloud protein popcorn. But it's also hitting the menus of restaurants that are seeking ways to encourage diners to pay for premium food and drinks. Take Starbucks, for example. The coffee giant said in late July that it will roll out a cold foam packed with 15 grams of protein later this year; the regular cold foam add-on typically costs customers an extra $1.25 per drink. The new foam comes as the chain's U.S. sales have been shrinking for the past year as coffee drinkers brew their java at home or seek out trendier options. Rival Dutch Bros launched a protein coffee in early 2024 and charges customers an extra $1 for the customization. The menu addition fueled strong same-store sales growth and profits for the upstart chain. Eateries are seeking to attract diners like Jared Hutkowski, a 42-year-old director of brokerage in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He works out six days a week and tries to hit his daily protein goal to improve his physique and overall health. When he dines out, he tries to maximize his protein, although he sometimes goes for pizza anyway. "The biggest factor is what I am in the mood for that day, and then I normally try and select a meal that has a least a serving of some type of protein in it," Hutkowski said. This year, 28.4% of U.S. restaurant menus call out "protein," up from 5.9% a decade ago, according to Datassential. And the trend looks like it has staying power. Datassential predicts that by 2029, more than 40% of eateries will highlight protein on their menus. "Protein is one of those things that's never been vilified, because no one's ever said that eating too much protein can be bad for you," Mintel's Mills said. In the short term, consuming more protein than your body needs likely won't cause health issues, but in the long term, it could cause kidney problems, according to Diane Han, a registered dietitian based in San Francisco and the founder of Woking Balance Wellness. The recommended daily amount of protein intake varies by body weight but is roughly 46 grams for women and 56 grams for men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For restaurants, protein's step change happened several years ago. In 2021, protein only had a menu penetration of 11.5%; by 2022, more than a quarter of restaurant menus used the term, based on Datassential data. That year, Dine Brands' IHOP, for example, introduced pancakes with 18 grams of protein per flapjack. Fast-casual eateries are the restaurant segment most likely to call out protein on their menus, thanks to the common practice of asking customers to pick their protein or offering to double their portion, according to Datassential. Fast-casual salad chain Sweetgreen introduced a line of "protein plates" in late 2023 as part of an effort to introduce more hearty options for dinner customers. The menu addition has helped the company grow its dinner business from 35% of sales to about 40%, executives said in March. Many restaurants are also leaning into U.S. consumers' desire for convenience. Accessibility may be why Datassential found that consumers tend to prefer protein-packed beverages. For Smoothie King, protein has been a menu staple since its founding more than 50 years ago. But in October, the chain took one step further, launching a menu aimed at consumers who take GLP-1 drugs for weight loss or diabetes. The rapid weight loss that can occur from the medications can cause muscle mass to drop, so doctors often advise patients to increase their protein intake to maintain their muscle. "It's a convenient, on-the-go way to get in your protein that you're looking for in your diet," said Lori Primavera, Smoothie King's vice president of research and development and product marketing. Many restaurants are also choosing to highlight existing protein-packed options, rather than adding new menu items that would slow down kitchens or add to much complexity to their operations. For example, Panda Express introduced its own protein plates earlier this year. The line, created in partnership with a registered dietitian, includes pre-existing menu items but packages them as a balanced meal, highlighting protein and fiber content. Chipotle Mexican Grill employed a similar strategy back in 2019 when it introduced "lifestyle bowls," marketed to fit different dietary goals, like the paleo diet or offering double protein. Likewise, in July, Chick-fil-A put the spotlight on its own high-protein options in a company blog, highlighting its grilled nuggets and the Cool Wrap, which features a grilled chicken breast, cheese and lettuce in a tortilla. But for the eateries that want to add new menu items, nachos with a choice of protein, restaurant-made protein bars and egg dishes that highlight high protein content are all increasingly popular options, according to Datassential trendologist Claire Conaghan. Eggs are one reason why breakfast, brunch and lunch eatery First Watch has always been "protein forward," CEO Chris Tomasso told CNBC. The chain hasn't adjusted its menu specifically to address consumers' demand for more protein, but TikTok influencers have highlighted how to order a high-protein meal when visiting its restaurants. "We hope that continues to be a trend because we're right down the middle of the fairway on that," Tomasso said. Of course, protein isn't the only way to win over health-conscious consumers. Hutkowski said his primary issue with eating at restaurants is that most of the food is cooked in oils, butter and heavy greases that rapidly add to his intake of fats for the day. "A restaurant finding cleaner ways to cook would be much more attractive to me than overly loaded protein dishes," he said.

Hamburg parents fighting insurance denial for baby's life-saving brain surgery

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Hamburg couple is beside themselves after their 10-month-old child's life-saving brain surgery was denied by their insurance company. Now, they're speaking out, pleading for help as they hold out hope that the decision will be reversed. Born in September 2024, Cameron Casaacci is the child that Alyssa and Brad Casacci always wanted. However, within hours of Cam's birth, their world was turned upside down. 'They did an MRI on this one-day-old baby and kind of confirmed the worst — that he had a very large stroke on the left side of his brain and the seizure activity was secondary to that injury to his brain,' Alyssa said. The family were then transferred to Oishei Children's Hospital, where they spent the next 19 days holding out hope for a miracle to save their baby boy. 'It's a really hard pill to swallow when you realize you have the sickest kid in the NICU,' Alyssa said. 'Cam is the most resilient, the hardest, toughest little kid you will ever meet. We only spent 19 days there; we thought we would be there a lot longer.' Cam kept on fighting as the family did what they could to deal with his condition. Through all the needles and medications, they remained hopeful that a solution would be found to save their son. '(The neurosurgeon) recommended a very drastic surgery,' Alyssa said. 'A hemispherectomy where basically they go in and they disconnect the left hemisphere of his brain from the right in order to bring Cam seizure freedom.' The family was able to find a highly recommended neurosurgeon in Pittsburgh and a date was set for the potentially live-saving brain surgery. However, as they prepared for the procedure, all of their hopes and prayers came crashing to a halt. The insurance company, Independent Health through New York State Medicaid, denied the surgery because it was out of network. 'They were saying, 'we have people here who do the surgery,' which we were told from the beginning there is no one in Western New York who has the skill and expertise to do this specific surgery,' Alyssa said. Now, well over a month since Cam was set to have the surgery, the family is heartbroken and hoping the insurance company will reverse their decision. 'Do the right thing,' Brad said. 'Look at it as a human, as a child, and not as a dollar sign.' WIVB News 4 reached out to Independent Health, who said the following: 'Federal law (HIPAA), New York State law, and our internal confidentiality policy prohibit us from disclosing any details concerning a member's protected health information. 'As a Medicaid managed care plan, we are bound by federal and state compliance laws to follow coverage decisions. New York State's Medicaid plans do not include out-of-area coverage, unless the service cannot be provided in-network. When such denials occur, Independent Health has identified in-network provider(s) and/or facilities(s) with the ability to provide the particular service. 'Independent Health provides comprehensive, quality benefits and services. Medicaid members have appeal rights and can also request a fair hearing if they disagree with the coverage decision. 'We always clearly let members know of their appeal rights. After the member has followed the appeal processes, coverage decisions by external entities are binding.' While the denial was heartbreaking for Cam's parents, they say they will never give up fighting for their son. 'It's very hard, very, very hard,' Brian said. 'There's dark days, there's isolating days where you don't know how you're going to get to the next day, but we're doing it for Cam.' A GoFundMe has been created to help the family.
