Amid A Thud In Tourism, Mehbooba Mufti Launches Together For Amarnath Yatra Campaign
Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), launched 'Together for Amarnath Yatra' campaign in Pahalgam on Tuesday. This initiative aims to promote unity, peace, and inclusive participation in the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2025, a significant annual pilgrimage in the region for Hindus. Mufti's initiative came at a time when the Union Territory is seeing a fresh revival of tourism which went down following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 tourists were killed.
Mehbooba Mufti engaged with various stakeholders, including local shopkeepers, hoteliers, taxi drivers, pony wallas, and civil society members, to ensure comprehensive preparations for the yatra. She emphasized the historical hospitality of Kashmiris, particularly those in Pahalgam, toward Amarnath pilgrims.
'The people of Kashmir & Pahalgam have welcomed Amarnath Yatris for centuries, this legacy will continue with the same spirit and sincerity,' said Mufti. Her interactions focused on listening to local concerns, understanding their needs, and acting to support the pilgrimage's success.
She said, 'In the heart of Kashmir, the Amarnath Yatra is more than a pilgrimage; it's a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and unwavering faith that binds us all.'
Mehbooba Mufti said that she has raised the issue of closure of parks in Kashmir with the LG. Mufti also slammed the JKNC government for failing to take a decision on reopening the closed parks.
"I had raised a request that if anyone has two ponies, he should be allowed to be engaged both...This time, it is a big test for the people of Pahalgam to ensure the smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra," she said.

The meeting was attended by Additional SP Udhampur, SDPOs, DySPs, and SHOs from Udhampur, Majalta, Rehambal, and Chenani, along with other officers involved in the Yatra arrangements. The discussions centred on key aspects such as security arrangements, intelligence sharing, traffic management, medical aid, emergency response, and logistical support. Special focus was laid on anti-narcotics operations. SSP Nagpure directed all officers to remain vigilant and conduct proactive drives to dismantle narco networks operating in the region. He also instructed officers to maintain a high level of alertness and operational readiness throughout the Yatra. Regular review meetings, briefing sessions, and mock drills were stressed to ensure the flawless implementation of all plans and protocols, officials said. The Amarnath Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath Cave Shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at an altitude of about 3,888 metres in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir (J-K). A week earlier, Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat chaired a joint meeting with officers from the Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at Police Control Room Kashmir to review the security arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025, Eid-Ul-Adha and other upcoming events. Tension gripped in Bengal's Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas after a violent clash broke out between two groups, leading to the alleged vandalism of a Shiva temple. The situation prompted heavy police deployment and the prohibitory order of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed to maintain law and to police sources, 13 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident, and raids are ongoing. 'Raids are presently underway, and additional personnel remain deployed. Several arrests were made,' a police officer unrest reportedly started after a dispute over the construction of shops in front of a Shiva temple in Maheshtala. Local residents opposed the move and instead built a small Tulsi Mandir, which allegedly triggered a violent backlash. As per eyewitnesses, chaos broke out when mobs pelted stones at police, torched vehicles, and clashed with authorities outside the Rabindranagar Police Station. 'Bricks were hurled from rooftops, tyres were set ablaze on the roads, and miscreants torched a motorbike in front of the police station,' said a police officer. 'Several police vehicles were damaged, and at least one police personnel was left bleeding after being hit by a brick.'To contain the violence, police fired tear gas shells, and reinforcements from Kolkata and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed. Several police personnel, including a woman constable, sustained injuries during the stone BJP launched a political offensive over the incident. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari led a protest outside the West Bengal Police headquarters in Alipore, demanding the deployment of central forces. He accused the state government of allowing the violence to spiral unchecked.'The Hindu community in Rabindranagar has been subjected to looting, arson, and violence for hours while the police watched silently. Several police vehicles were set on fire, yet there was no effective intervention,' Adhikari further claimed that DGP Rajiv Kumar refused to meet him.
