Itauma hurt the veteran early doors and sent him hurtling to the canvas with a punishing right hook.
Whyte, 37, rose to his feet, but referee Mikael Hook saved him being rendered unconscious by waving off the contest.
And Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn insists the former WBC heavyweight title challenger, at this stage of his career, shouldn't have been put against a young and hungry lion in Itauma.
In an interview with Boxing News, he said of Itauma's stunning win: "[I was] very impressed.
"But I feel very sad for Dillian. He shouldn't have been in there, if I'm being honest.
'That was the worst matchup for him with no activity. I feel like that was always going to happen.
"Knowing Dillian at 38 years old, I found it hard to watch. That was one of the reasons he took the fight. The money was great."
Hearn expected Whyte to be up against it in the opening rounds but admits he didn't expect him to wilt so quickly.

He continued: "Dillian is brave. He always believes he can win, but we always said those first three or four rounds were going to be horrendous for him.
"I didn't expect them to be that horrendous.
Moses Itauma leaves sports psychologist baffled as he reveals boxing is his 'drug' ahead of Dillian Whyte fight
'I just feel the punch resistance [wasn't there]. It was a lot of fast cupping shots on the side of the head, but it wasn't like [huge shots].
"He didn't look good on his feet.
"And someone as good and as special as Moses, it's going to be really difficult if you can't get through the start."
Itauma well and truly put the heavyweight division on notice with his destruction of Whyte.
And the Chatham clubber is willing to take on all comers in the fast-changing division.
"But I feel very sad for Dillian. He shouldn't have been in there, if I'm being honest."
Eddie Hearn on Dillian Whyte's loss to Moses Itauma
He said: "I thank Dillian, it takes two to tangle and he gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills.
'To be honest, for the first two minutes the nerves were there.
"But then I saw an opening that I could not miss and I executed the game plan.
'What's next? Honestly, I will fight anyone they put in front of me.
'If I am honest, Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel deserved their shot, but I would jump in with them lot.'

Newcastle star 'likes' post slamming Alexander Isak as Liverpool plot second bid

Alexander Isak has made it clear he wishes to leave Newcastle for Liverpool (Picture: Getty) Newcastle star Joelinton has made his stance clear on Alexander Isak's conduct after 'liking' a social media post criticising the 'destructive path' the forward has taken this summer. Isak informed Newcastle's hierarchy of his desire to seek opportunities elsewhere last month and the situation has turned increasingly bitter in the proceeding days and weeks. Liverpool have emerged as Isak's priority for the new campaign and the 25-year-old – the Magpies' top scorer with 27 goals last term – has been training alone after opting out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia. An impassioned post from Isak on Tuesday evening accused Newcastle of 'breaking promises' and holding him to ransom with just a fortnight remaining of the transfer window. The Toon responded with an explosive statement of their own, refuting Isak's claims while also stressing that they would be prepared to stand in the way of the Swede's potential exit at St James' Park. It remains to be seen if Liverpool will return with a follow-up bid for Isak having seen an initial offer of £110million – plus add-ons – rejected out of hand by their Premier League rivals.. The latest reports suggest the English champions would be willing to break the British transfer record for a second time this summer by lodging a £130m bid for Isak before the September 1 deadline. The Sweden striker has accused Newcastle of 'broken promises' (Picture: Getty) Liverpool are reportedly considering a second bid for Isak (Picture: Getty) How to watch 215 Premier League matches this season (Picture: Metro/Sky Sports) Sky Sports is going full throttle this Premier League season, airing a record-breaking 215 live matches - that's nearly double the usual dose of drama, goals, and post-match meltdowns. However, it's understood Newcastle are refusing to waver from their £150m asking price and would only consider selling if they are confident they can bring in a viable replacement. Yoane Wissa remains Newcastle's top target up front, but Brentford turned down their initial proposal for the attacker and are believed to be holding out for a fee in excess of £50m. It's fair to say Isak's conduct has left many Newcastle fans furious, with loud chants of, 'There's only one greedy b******', heard in the away end at Villa Park last weekend. And it seems Isak's behaviour has begun to seriously frustrate and anger members of the Newcastle dressing room – that's if Joelinton's social media antics are anything to go by. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page With the situation threatening to descend into a farce, several eagle-eyed Newcastle fans spotted that Joelinton had 'liked' an Instagram post from fan page, Wor Flags, condemning Isak's actions in recent weeks. 'Idolised and adored. No promises broken by the fans that make this club,' the post read. 'We deserve better than the destructive path you've chosen. 'Newcastle United will never be defeated.' Joelinton 'liked' a post hitting out at Isak's 'destructive' behaviour (Picture: Instagram/@worflags) Despite Isak's hardline position, Eddie Howe has repeatedly stressed that he would be prepared to welcome the attacker back into the fold as soon as he is ready to rejoin his team-mates. 'Nothing has changed. The door is well and truly open,' the Newcastle head coach said. 'He has to decide what he wants to do. We would like a resolution. We need that clarity. You don't need any kind of distraction. 'I am not in control of that. There is one person who can control that. Let's wait and see. I have made my stance clear. I am concentrating on the team.' Howe is ready to reintegrate Isak back into the squad (Picture: Getty) Asked about the chants directed at Isak from Newcastle fans, Howe replied: 'The supporters acted really well today. 'If afterwards, they want to say something, they are free to do that.' Speaking after Newcastle's goalless draw with Aston Villa, Anthony Gordon admitted the uncertainty surrounding Isak's future had contributed to a 'difficult' start to the season. More Trending 'It has been difficult because we're a tight-knit group,' the Newcastle winger said. 'But you see today, we've still got that spirit and togetherness. 'That will never go, regardless of individuals. We're still together. Things like this can make you better in the end.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. It emerged that Khelif had been banned from fighting in competitions by the International Boxing Association in 2023 after tests allegedly showed her to have DNA of a male. But the International Olympic Committee allowed her to compete in Paris because of her female passport status after replacing the Russian-led IBA, who were stripped of recognition by the IOC in a row over ethics and financial management. The controversy sparked a huge debate, with Khelif being subjected to a barrage of abuse and accusations, including from the likes of Elon Musk and JK Rowling. READ MORE IN BOXING GENDER ROW Imane Khelif breaks silence after leaked report 'proves Olympic boxer is male' Changes have come into play since then, with the new governing body, World Boxing, confirming fighters will be required to undergo mandatory sex screening to compete in their events. Khelif has not stepped into the ring since her Paris victory over Lui Yang on August 9. However, earlier this week Khelif was seen sporting a remarkable new look. On Tuesday she took a selfie alongside television host podcaster Nassima Djaffar Bey. Khelif was seen beaming in the photo, appearing with makeup and flowing hair. Djaffar Bey shared the photo to her Instagram story and captioning the post: "Always a pleasure." New Gender Testing Rule for Female Athletes at World Athletics Championships On the one-year anniversary of winning her Olympic gold, Khelif shared a cryptic Instagram post as she reflected on the "difficult phase" she was going through. Khelif said: "It was an unforgettable moment a moment where my tears mixed with the awe of pride, a moment where my country's flag soared high, and I held my head up with the strength of a boxer and the heart of a human. "Today, on the anniversary of that triumph, I'm going through a difficult phase filled with challenges, silence, and waiting… "But despite everything, the spirit that fought for gold still beats within me. I still believe that every fall is a prelude to a stronger rise, and that every delay carries within it a test of faith and willpower. "True strength lies not only in victory, but in perseverance against all odds. I am Imane Khelif a champion yesterday, resilient today, and determined to return tomorrow. "Thank you to everyone who still believes in me… And to myself, thank you for never giving up."

Chelsea ace Cole Palmer in battle with £750-a-bottle winery over bid to trademark nickname & goal celebration

In a case of Claret vs Blue, the £750-a-bottle winery has opposed the Chelsea player's bid as they want to preserve their own image. 3 Cole Palmer's bid to trademark his Cold Palmer nickname has been challenged by posh French vineyard Château Palmer Credit: Getty 3 The vineyard is in France's Margaux region 3 One bottle of the firm's Cru Classé Margaux from 1970 was listed at £750 The hotshot, 23, wanted to trademark his shivering goal celebration and Cold Palmer nickname. But the application has been unexpectedly opposed by the revered vineyard in France's Margaux region. The footballer hoped to use the moniker for a range of goods such as toiletries and clothes. But the application also asks for legal protection to be allowed to market wine. His papers highlighted: 'Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit beverages; pre-mixed alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low alcoholic beverages; none of the aforesaid including wines complying with the specifications of the PDO Champagne.' And that alerted bosses at the French label, who have opposed the application. Lawyers at the government's Intellectual Property Office will rule on the potential clash after receiving representations from both sides. Drake hints Cole Palmer is inspiration behind his new album name as he shares brilliant video of Chelsea star The wine firm was founded in 1814 when British Army officer Charles Palmer acquired the estate, then known as Château de Gascq. He renamed it after himself and expanded the vineyards. Royal wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd says of the firm: 'Château Palmer is a leading wine estate in Margaux. 'Within its appellation, Palmer is certainly the closest rival to its first growth neighbour, Ch. Margaux. 'Although officially ranked a Third Growth, at their best, the wines of Chateau Palmer are among the greatest anywhere in Bordeaux.' Yesterday, one bottle of the firm's Cru Classé Margaux from 1970 was listed at £750. Cole Palmer is not known to be a wine connoisseur, but did pretend to drink a pint of lager last season when one was thrown on the pitch when Chealsea played Copenhagen. He famously asked a waiter in a posh restaurant for ketchup before asking him if he had cooked the meal. His wine preferences are unknown. The star made his senior debut for Manchester City in 2020, and was in the team's squad to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 2023 before signing for Chelsea for £40million.
