Oman unlocks RO 11 billion to power final phase of 10th plan

Muscat: Oman's Ministry of Economy has revealed that total development allocations under the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) reached RO 11.009 billion by the end of March 2025. This reflects a 72% increase compared to the initial allocation of RO 6.414 billion when the plan was launched. The rise in development spending is part of a broader national effort to stimulate growth and support Oman Vision 2040. According to the ministry's performance report, the increase was driven by four main policy priorities. First, the government has strengthened investment in social development projects and programmes, aiming to improve citizens' quality of life. Second, funding has been directed toward economic diversification, with new initiatives supporting sectors beyond oil and gas. Third, the government is focusing on governorate-level development to reduce regional disparities and ensure more balanced economic progress. Fourth, significant efforts have been made to improve the investment environment, attracting both local and foreign investors. The Ministry of Economy stated that the additional funding supports national infrastructure, job creation, and the long-term sustainability of the economy. The Tenth Five-Year Plan remains a key instrument for realising the strategic objectives of Oman Vision 2040. This surge in allocations highlights the Sultanate's commitment to economic transformation and inclusive development across all regions.

Oman surpasses food security targets as consumption hits RO 3 billion

Muscat: Oman has made significant strides in enhancing food self-sufficiency, with domestic production now meeting — and in some cases exceeding — household demand across several key food categories. The progress comes as annual food consumption by Omani households surpasses OMR 3 billion, according to new data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). Dr Yusuf bin Mohammed Al Riyami, Director General of the NCSI, stated that the Sultanate has achieved high levels of self-reliance in essential food products, reflecting the success of national policies aimed at improving food security and reducing dependency on imports. Among the top-performing sectors, fish production reached 158% self-sufficiency, indicating not only that local demand is being met but also that Oman holds surplus capacity to support fish exports. Dates — a culturally and economically significant product — achieved 97% self-sufficiency, further cementing their place as a core component of Oman's food system. Milk and dairy products also performed strongly, reaching 92% self-sufficiency, thanks to continued investment in the livestock sector and food manufacturing infrastructure. Meanwhile, tomatoes — a key staple in local diets — recorded 83% self-sufficiency, driven by improvements in domestic agricultural output and the adoption of modern farming practices. These figures underline Oman's growing capacity to meet its own food needs, in line with the goals set under Vision 2040, which prioritises national resilience, economic diversification, and sustainable development. Officials credit government-led programmes in agri-tech, irrigation, and rural infrastructure as major drivers of this performance. As the food sector continues to expand, Oman's focus will remain on maintaining high production standards, improving supply chain efficiency, and supporting agricultural innovation — all of which are essential to building a secure and competitive food economy for the future.

Oman records notable progress in UN's sustainable goals

Muscat – Oman has recorded a notable progress in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the country's population now surpassing 5.3mn, according to new data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). As of June 2025, Oman's total population stands at 5,303,578, comprising 3,006,387 Omani nationals (56.69%) and 2,297,191 expatriates (43.31%). The demographic update was released alongside the SDG Statistical Report – May 2025, which confirms that Oman has eradicated extreme poverty, with zero per cent of the population living below the international poverty threshold of US$1.25 per day – five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. The report indicates continued economic improvement, with the average monthly household income at RO1,174 and per capita income at RO234. Health indicators show sustained improvement, with maternal mortality at 17.1 per 100,000 live births and under-five mortality at 11 per 1,000, both meeting global standards. In education, the primary school completion rate has reached 95.6%, while adult literacy is recorded at 97.9%. However, the report highlights a gender gap in post-basic education, where 74% of females complete this level compared to 50.4% of males. In the area of renewable energy, clean sources now account for 4% of total consumption, following the operational launch of the Ibri solar power plant – a marked increase from zero in 2020. Oman has also fully implemented its disaster risk and climate mitigation strategies in line with the Sendai Framework. Disaster-related deaths have declined to 0.06 per 100,000 population, and all wastewater in the country is now treated. The report positions Oman as a regional example of integrating economic development with social equity and environmental responsibility, reinforcing its commitment to Vision 2040.
