Cole Palmer hit back at the critics who had been giving Chelsea 's***' after firing them to Club World Cup glory in New York.
Palmer, who was presented with the Man of the Match award by President Donald Trump, scored the first two goals and set up the third in a surprise 3-0 final victory over Champions League winners Paris St Germain at the MetLife Stadium as Enzo Maresca's men capped an encouraging season in style.
Asked how excited he was by the team Maresca is building at Stamford Bridge, the England international told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team. Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.'
Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good.'
Defending champions England cruised into the Euro 2025 quarter-finals with a 6-1 victory over tournament newcomers Wales, who bowed out of the competition in St Gallen.
Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Ella Toone doubled the scoring in the 21st minute before Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 4-0 at the break.
Beth Mead scored a fifth after the restart before Hannah Cain clawed one back with Wales' second-ever goal in a major tournament, but substitute Aggie Beever-Jones completed the scoring for an assured England, who will now face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday.
For seven minutes after the final whistle, Liverpool players and staff stood in front of their supporters at Preston as they chanted Diogo Jota's name.
Sunday's pre-season friendly at Deepdale was originally envisaged as a day to kick-start preparations for Liverpool's Premier League title defence, but it played out as a memorial service for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 10 days after they died in a car accident in Spain.
On the pitch Liverpool eased to a 3-1 win through goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, but thoughts of Jota and Silva remained at the forefront throughout the day.
As Claudia Rose Maguire, wife of former Preston player Sean, sang Liverpool anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off, Preston captain Ben Whiteman walked the length of the pitch to lay a wreath in front of the visiting fans with the Bill Shankly Kop dominated by banners and scarves bearing Jota's name.

Marc Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player for now but Premier League champions Liverpool are admirers of the England centre-back and have attempted two transfer bids Liverpool have no plans to return with a third Marc Guehi bid after seeing two approaches rebuffed, it has been claimed. Crystal Palace have been playing hardball over their captain, with England star Guehi one of a number of in-demand Eagles stars. Palace appear determined to keep hold of as many senior figures as possible as they gear up for a European campaign. Ebere Eze remains a target for Arsenal, while plenty of clubs are known to be fans of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Liverpool aren't the only admirers of Guehi. Newcastle and Tottenham made efforts to sign the defender last summer, but he stayed at Selhurst Park and helped Palace win the FA Cup. Guehi is in the final year of his contract, but that hasn't seen his team entertain a sale on the cheap. According to Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness), Palace still want close to £48m for their skipper. Neither of Liverpool's two offers have hit that mark, and the Reds are now said to be ready to look at alternative targets. Arne Slot's side do still need bodies at centre-back, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Ibrahima Konate has yet to agree an extension to his current deal, which expires next summer, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have just two years left on their respective deals. Palace and Liverpool are due to face off in Sunday's Community Shield, after winning the FA Cup and Premier League respectively last term. The match will provide a chance for Guehi to remind the league champions of his quality, though he is not expected to look to force a move away. Oliver Glasner's side geared up for the match with a double header against Augsburg, winning one meeting and losing te other. Liverpool also had a double header at the start of the month, winning both games against Athletic Club at Anfield. 'The guys are in top shape; they obviously know the drills. That makes it easy," Palace boss Glasner said after his team's final friendly. "Now it's just a matter of getting match-fit. That's why they needed 90 minutes of exercise in their legs. 'We actually had another friendly match planned… but now we have a Community Shield against Liverpool instead! But of course, we're happy to take that. You could say it could be worse!" Liverpool boss Slot has been impressed with the Reds' new arrivals as they look to make up for the departure of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold. "We've lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back," he said after the Athletic friendlies. "Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo [Florian Wirtz] has this quality as well in a totally different position. Carney Chukwuemeka is 'set to join' Borussia Dortmund in a £22m permanent transfer move from Chelsea, according to reports. Dortmund have been in talks with Chelsea all summer for the 21-year-old and originally wanted to sign the player on another loan deal, having had him at the Westfalenstadion for the second half of the 2024-25 season. Chelsea, though, were only interested in a permanent sale and it appears the west London club have now got the job done with a move agreed. That's according to French journalist Sebastien Vidal, who reports that Chukwuemeka is now set to join the German club in a deal worth £22m. Chukwuemeka has made a total of 32 appearances for Chelsea since he joined the Blues from Aston Villa in a £20m deal two years ago. And it sparked a perplexed reaction from co-commentator Steven Thompson after Raskin himself was left in disbelief.
