Nico Raskin in bizarre Rangers booking while warming up as yellow card sparks on air confusion

Daily Record2 days ago
The Belgian wasn't in the starting XI and was booked for a seemingly innocuous off-the-ball moment
Nico Raskin was booked for dissent in Rangers ' clash with Viktoria Plzen for a seemingly innocuous off-the ball incident – when he wasn't even playing.

And it sparked a perplexed reaction from co-commentator Steven Thompson after Raskin himself was left in disbelief.

Rangers were leading the Champions League third qualifying round first leg 1-0 thanks to Djeidi Gassama's opener when the bizarre moment, which left the BBC's commentary team astonished, took place.

Experienced whistler Clement Turpin briefly stopped play on 31 minutes when he was called over by the fourth official and brandished a yellow card in the direction of Raskin, who, alongside his skipper James Tavernier, had been dropped by Russell Martin.
The midfielder was amazed at the decision and replays could only conjure up a seemingly harmless moment where away defender Sampson Dweh went to retrieve the ball, and Raskin touched him on the shoulder.
After TV cameras showed a confused Raskin walking away, Thompson asked: "What's he done to get a yellow there? Deary me. I'd like to know why he was booked..."
The TV coverage later stated it was given for dissent – but couldn't clarify which incident had been identified.
Commentator Liam McLeod then said, after a bit of digging, that it was for "delaying the play" but Thompson was adamant: "He didn't do that."

Whistler Turpin, who took charge of the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid three years ago - is no stranger to officiating matches involving Rangers.
That same season, he officiated the Ibrox side's sensation 4-2 win away to Borussia Dortmund on their way to the UEFA Cup final.
He was also in charge for Rangers' Champions League hammering at home to Liverpool, and their qualifier against PSV Eindhonve in the same competition when the sides drew 2-2.

Benjamin Sesko's Man Utd contract shows real reason he snubbed Newcastle for £74m deal

Manchester Untied have reached an agreement in principle to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with the 22-year-old set to arrive in the coming days to complete a medical Benjamin Sesko turned down a bigger money offer from Newcastle, such was his desire to instead sign for Manchester United. The RB Leipzig striker is to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the dramatic transfer saga reaching its conclusion. ‌ Sesko will complete Ruben Amorim's attacking overhaul, joining in a deal that could eventually reach £74million. The Athletic report that the Bundesliga club have accepted a bid worth €76.5m (£66.4m) up front and a further €8.5m (£7.4m) in add-ons to sign. ‌ The Slovenian will arrive in Manchester for a medical after deciding against signing for their Premier League rivals Newcastle. Eddie Howe's side opened the bidding war earlier this week, offering £71m up front and more in incentives. ‌ And with Leipzig accepting both offers, it came down to the 22-year-old to make the final decision on his destination. But despite Newcastle boasting Champions League football, the Red Devils have won the race. After missing out on Europe altogether following their defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, there was apprehension they would be unable to land some of their top targets. Instead, Sesko was so enamoured with making the move to Manchester, he is reportedly leaving money on the table. Sky Sports Germany claim that Newcastle's contract offer was worth more than the proposal from Old Trafford bosses, with the striker happy to waive a portion of his salary. There is also an understanding that the player's agency was willing to give up a significant share of the commission in order to get a deal over the line. He will join Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who signed from Wolves and Brentford respectively, in a new look Manchester United attack worth more than £200m. Amorim made attacking reinforcements his number one priority this summer after a dismal season which saw them finish 15th and score just 44 league goals in the process. Amorim's attention can now turn towards a new midfield player, with Brighton's Carlos Baleba at the top of their wishlist. The 21-year-old is the latest Seagulls star tipped for massive things, following the sales of players like Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Joao Pedro. ‌ Baleba has three years remaining on his deal at The Amex, with Brighton unwilling to sell at this point. Nevertheless, contact has been made via intermediaries with the Red Devils boss desperate to add extra dynamism in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, Newcastle have been left licking their wounds again after yet another near miss in the summer window. Howe had hoped for a transformative window on Tyneside after returning to Europe's elite with a top-four finish. However, they have now missed out on a host of their top targets, with the future of star striker Alexander Isak remaining up in the air. The Magpies had initially targeted France international Hugo Ekitike, with the idea of pairing him up front with Isak. Instead, Ekitike made the move to Liverpool, with Anfield bosses now hoping to double down and snatch Isak from St James' Park as well. The Sweden international missed the club's tour of Asia and has been asked to train away from team-mates since their return.

Napoli fans blast Kevin De Bruyne on social media for problem Pep Guardiola called out

Kevin De Bruyne has made an underwhelming start to life at Napoli, and the Serie A giants' fans have already turned on the former Manchester City star for a brutal reason Napoli supporters have unleashed fierce criticism towards Kevin De Bruyne for similar reasons that once prompted Pep Guardiola to publicly admonish one of his Manchester City players. The 33-year-old penned a two-year contract with the Serie A club this summer following the expiry of his deal with the Citizens, concluding his decade-long stint in Manchester. ‌ Although no longer the commanding presence of previous campaigns, De Bruyne's acquisition represented a massive signing for the Italian champions, who had not long secured their second title in three seasons. ‌ Whilst the excitement surrounding his arrival was considerable, the Belgian has struggled to make an immediate impact during pre-season, with Napoli managing just one victory from their four fixtures so far. ‌ Three of their opponents currently compete in Italy's lower tiers, yet De Bruyne has failed to find the net, reports the Manchester Evening News. With three matches remaining before the campaign begins, some of the club's fervent supporters have already slated the Premier League icon across social media. Fans have targeted De Bruyne's physical condition, with numerous supporters flocking to social media to suggest he appears unfit ahead of their Serie A title defence and Champions League return. One supporter posted: "Anyone with a technical eye would have seen that yesterday De Bruyne was running with incredible heaviness and was often inaccurate with his through balls." Another brutally commented: "Give him an XL shirt, you're letting him eat too much." The allegations directed at the midfielder were once a subject raised by Guardiola, who openly slammed Kalvin Phillips for being overweight. The Spaniard revealed the England international had exceeded his weight target when he returned from the 2022 World Cup in December. Phillips - who has featured in just 31 matches for the Citizens since his £42million transfer from Leeds United in 2022 - eventually received a delayed apology from Guardiola, who acknowledged his mistake. ‌ "Yeah, I'm sorry," he said. "Once in eight years is not bad. But I'm so sorry. I apologise to him. I spoke to him before [making the comment]. I never, ever don't speak to the team before I say something here, or the player in that case." The midfielder has been sent out on loan twice to West Ham and Ipswich Town during his stint with City, and he previously addressed Guardiola's remarks about his weight. ‌ Speaking to The Guardian, he said: "After the World Cup was probably the toughest, when Pep came out and said I was overweight. He was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it. "I did not disagree with him but obviously I took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. And my family were not happy about it, either. Especially my mum... It was just a misunderstanding and I think he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my weight target."

Liverpool will not be held to ransom in pursuit of Alexander Isak

Liverpool will not be held to ransom in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The PA news agency understands the Premier League champions remain keen on the 25-year-old Sweden international, who was made to train by himself on Tyneside on Wednesday after missing the Magpies' pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea amid speculation over his future. Advertisement However, as they await completion of Darwin Nunez's proposed €53 million – around £46.3million – plus bonuses move to Saudi club Al Hilal, sources on Merseyside indicated they would not enter a bidding war as they sought a replacement. Alexander Isak scored what proved to be Newcastle's winning goal against Liverpool in last season's Carabao Cup final (Owen Humphreys/PA) Liverpool's admiration of Isak, who scored what proved to be the winning goal against them in last season's Carabao Cup final at Wembley, is well known and they have already tabled a bid of around £110m, which was swiftly rejected. Newcastle have repeatedly insisted the Swede, for whom they paid Real Sociedad £63m during the summer of 2022, is simply not for sale and with three years remaining on his existing contract, they hold a strong position in one sense. However Isak, who signalled his intention to explore his options during the current transfer window, has so far resisted all overtures to sign a new, long-term deal at St James' Park and that appears to have encouraged the Anfield club that they may be able to prise him from head coach Eddie Howe's grasp. Advertisement That said, the Reds are understood to have drawn up a series of criteria which will govern their pursuit of the former AIK Solna and Borussia Dortmund forward, or indeed alternative targets. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe (left) faces the task of trying to persuade Alexander Isak that his future remains on Tyneside (John Walton/PA) Among them are an insistence that any replacement must be of the required quality, must represent fair market value and perhaps most importantly, must be realistically attainable. In that context, Newcastle's asking price of £150m – which was designed to ward off potential suitors – would seem a significant obstacle, as would their long-held stance on his availability, although there is little doubt that he would meet the quality requirement having scored 27 goals in all competitions last season. In addition, the Magpies' interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko looks unlikely to come to fruition with Manchester United confident they are in the driving seat, complicating the search for a credible replacement with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson having being touted as an option. Advertisement Newcastle were already in the market for a striker following Callum Wilson's departure at the end of last season, but plugging the gap left by a man around whom Howe would ideally want to build his team, during a summer which has already proved intensely difficult, would be both difficult and expensive. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is close to completing a move to Saudi club Al Hilal (Peter Byrne/PA) The alternative is to persuade Isak that his future remains at St James' at least in the short term – there is little doubt that his head has been turned – and that is a task which would take all his manager's estimable powers. It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will increase their offer for the player if and when the Nunez deal is finalised. They will bank a significant proportion of the 75m euros – around £65.4m – plus bonuses they paid Benfica for the 26-year-old Uruguay international in June 2022, having rebuffed advances from Saudi Arabia in January and Napoli, who are understood not to have met the club's valuation and to have wanted to pay the fee over five years, this summer.
