Report: New Lexus Coupes To Be Based On Supra MKVI

Read the full story on The Auto Wire A new report claims the Toyota Supra MKVI, which is in development right now, will have a Lexus version. Supposedly, the new sports car will replace the already phased-out Lexus RC as well as the LC. While the former coupe has already been axed, the LC is rumored to be an interesting proposition and we can see why Toyota would make such a decision. After all, developing a sports car is expensive, especially in the current state of the auto industry. Getting the most bang for its buck is what the Japanese automaker does so very well. The quest to keep expenses down was what drove Toyota to work with BMW on the MKV Supra. That rankled quite a few enthusiasts who wanted a 'pure' Toyota. They obviously don't know much about the origin of the 2JZ-GTE. Anyway, the shocking report from Japanese enthusiast site Best Car Web about the next-gen Supra and Lexus coupes has another bomb in it: one engine option might be sourced from Mazda. We can already hear the howling, but this really isn't all that shocking to us. Long have the rumors been circulating that Toyota will acquire Mazda. The two have a manufacturing agreement and share technologies with each other. A turbocharged inline-four developed by Toyota is reportedly in the mix, but the inline-six for the MKVI Supra might come from Mazda. Maybe Toyota got sick of everyone whining about the MKV Supra really being a Bimmer? In another twist, Best Car Web says there's a chance there could be a Mazda version of the MKVI Supra. Mazda fans would probably love such a thing, although we think some will still whine like some Toyota enthusiasts. It sounds like a lot of things are up for consideration inside Toyota for the next-gen Supra. What the sports car will ultimately be like remains to be seen, but at least it's coming back and not being ended. Mazda RX-7 Successor And Next Miata Spell Trouble For Toyota's GR Division

Mazda RX-7 Successor And Next Miata Spell Trouble For Toyota's GR Division originally appeared on Autoblog. Mazda has a rich history of producing compact, fun-to-drive sports cars. Rarely have they been overpowered; instead, the Japanese marque has a knack for crafting sporty cars that emphasize balance and feel. At the moment, the only modern sports car upholding this legacy is the MX-5 Miata ND, but not for much longer. The latest reports suggest that an RX-7 successor and an all-new Miata will add new, exciting chapters to Mazda's sports car legacy, but one is set to arrive some time before the other. The beautiful Iconic SP concept shown by Mazda in 2023 will be the basis for what has been dubbed an RX-7 successor, and according to Motor Trend, this rotary-engine sports car is nearly complete. This confirms an earlier report from April that Mazda has made tremendous progress in making the rotary powertrain suitable for production in an era where emissions regulations are much stricter. 'You can expect Iconic SP will be a good successor for RX-7,' said Ryuichi Umeshita, Mazda's Chief Technical Officer. The production sports car is expected to feature an electric motor supported by a dual-rotor rotary engine; the latter will act as a generator, so the sports car won't have issues with range. It should produce around 365 horsepower, but more importantly, Mazda has ensured it can meet emissions regulations. With that sort of power, we can expect a fiery battle with the next Toyota GR Supra. A potential second powertrain option will be of even greater interest to enthusiasts. This one will use the rotary engine as the primary power source, where it will actually power the wheels, not merely act as a generator. Umeshita would not confirm the name of the new sports car, but didn't deny the RX-7 or RX-9 names could be used. When speaking about other sports car names from Mazda's past, he said: 'There is very little possibility that we will name it Cosmo.' The sporty Cosmo was primarily sold in other markets between 1967 and 1996, with the most recent one being the flagship Mazda in Japan. It's likely the brand wants to reserve the Cosmo's legacy and not simply slap the name onto something much newer and sportier. Whereas the production version of the Iconic SP could arrive around 2027, the next MX-5 is further away. It will still be a small, nimble roadster with a manual gearbox and a gas engine, likely based on the new Skyactiv-Z engine Mazda is working on, said to be ready in 2027. Importantly, the Iconic SP and Miata will be separate cars, with Umeshita clarifying that the former won't cannibalize MX-5 sales. The production Iconic SP will be a larger, more expensive model than the Miata, especially because of its electrified powertrain and use of the more complex rotary engine. Now all we need is for the MazdaSpeed 3 to make a comeback, too, which would mean the brand would have a full lineup of performance cars to take on Toyota's GR division. Mazda RX-7 Successor And Next Miata Spell Trouble For Toyota's GR Division first appeared on Autoblog on Jun 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by Autoblog on Jun 25, 2025, where it first appeared.

Trump picked a horrible time to crush electric cars

Just a few short months ago, American consumers had an appealing off-ramp: electric vehicles. EV sales pushed above 1.3 million vehicles in 2024. The future of cars was increasingly looking like it would be electric. Advertisement But since he took office, President Trump has been methodically stifling the EV market. He has issued orders Get The Gavel A weekly SCOTUS explainer newsletter by columnist Kimberly Atkins Stohr. Enter Email Sign Up He wants to gut EV charging infrastructure and has threatened to cancel tax credits that prompted many people to switch to an electric vehicle. He even says he plans to sell the Tesla he bought from former DOGE czar Elon Musk Faced with that hostility and the ever-shifting tariff landscape, Detroit automakers have Advertisement Meanwhile, plans to build EV battery plants — many in red states — are slowing down, potentially threatening future jobs. Even those that survive are shrinking. On Monday, Ford Motor gave journalists a tour of its All this is alarming to Ford, which has another headache: It is licensing lithium-ion battery technology from a Chinese company 'We don't want to back off on scaling, hiring, or training in an industry we need to be competitive in the future,' said Lisa Drake, Ford's vice president of technology platform programs and EV systems, Trump's attacks on EVs threaten to put the United States even further behind the rest of the world. Globally, analysts think For now, the main alternative to EVs are gas-powered hybrid-electric vehicles, which are expected to set records themselves this year, in part because Toyota has switched two of its best sellers, the Camry and the RAV4, to hybrids. Advertisement Those past spikes in gas prices have also led to jumps in the popularity of hybrids. I bought my first one in 2008, when gasoline in Michigan soared above $4 a gallon, and I'm now on my second. Hybrid sales so far this year Counting hybrids and EVs together, it could turn out that one in four vehicles sold this year is 'electrified,' as Toyota calls it. Already, For now, hybrids may be the compromise for environmentally minded consumers. But who knows: Maybe they'll appear on Trump's radar once he's unplugged EVs.
