Kiss of the Spider Woman hits theaters this fall
Jennifer Lopez is stepping into her most theatrical role yet.
The multi-hyphenate star, 55, returns to her musical theater roots and dazzles in a teaser trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman, a new film adaptation of the 1993 Broadway classic.
Lopez takes on the titular role of Aurora, a mysterious screen siren who haunts the fantasies of a political prisoner held in a repressive South American jail.
Set to John Kander and Fred Ebb's award-winning score, the trailer offers a glimpse at the film's blend of gritty realism and old-Hollywood fantasy. Lopez's character glides between dream sequences and haunting musical numbers as two cellmates — one a Marxist revolutionary (played by Diego Luna), the other a gay window dresser imprisoned for 'immoral behavior' (played by Tonatiuh)— navigate their unlikely friendship.

Kiss of the Spider Woman premiered on Broadway in March 1993 and was an instant hit with critics and audiences. Based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, the musical features a sweeping score by Kander and Ebb — the legendary duo behind Chicago and Cabaret — and a book by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally. It won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical and a trophy for star Chita Rivera, who originated the title role and cemented its legacy as one of musical theater's most seductive and enigmatic characters.
The story was previously adapted for a 1985 film starring William Hurt, Raul Julia and Sônia Braga.
This new movie is written and directed by Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast and the writer of Chicago and The Greatest Showman.
Lopez's role in Kiss of the Spider Woman will mark her debut in a movie musical. She also serves as a co-producer on the project, alongside ex Ben Affleck and 12 others, including Matt Damon.

In a November interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, Lopez opened up about the movie, calling it "the most challenging and rewarding role I've ever had."
"It's a dark story, but also one about love and survival — about helping each other through hard times,' Lopez said. "I think that's a message we really need right now."
She went on to explain that John Kander was with her in the studio when she recorded her songs. "He's [98] years old and still so full of life," Lopez said. "Hearing him say, 'I've never heard this song sung better' — it was one of the best moments of my career."
Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to premiere in theaters nationwide this fall.
The movie debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival back in January, where Lopez was visibly emotional as audiences stood for a lengthy ovation.
"I've been waiting for this moment my whole life," she said during a post-screening discussion.

Pope Leo XIV joins Chicago's Icon Hall of Fame

CHICAGO — Chicago's history is filled with larger-than-life personalities, but no Chicagoan has achieved quite the mix of fame and faith that Pope Leo has. From the Red Line to the skyline, and from comedians to coaches, Chicago is a city of icons. The Windy Cindy is the long-term home of the world's best basketball player, Michael Jordan, and the nation's biggest TV star, Oprah. It's the birthplace of Disney and deep dish, and the home of the first Black president and now the first American pope. 'I never knew until recently that the pope has never been from the U.S., let alone Chicago. I think it's cool, really cool,' Andrew Billups said. Pope Leo XIV was on the front of nearly every newspaper worldwide. His face is already one of the most recognizable in the world. Chicago is also taking center stage on late night TV. 'Regardless of your beliefs, I think it's pretty cool that Chicago's getting represented on a global scale,' Molly Meinhart said. In front of another Chicago icon — the Wrigley Field Marquee — Meinhart says the pope will take his place in a long line of Chicago icons. 'It's pretty cool piecing together all of the things that have always been famous and now new famous things. I can say I lived in Chicago when we got the pope,' Meinhart said. One of Chicago's signature hot dog stands, the Weiner's Circle, paid tribute to the pope. 'I think it's incredible. I hope he'll be an excellent representative of the city and the needs of Americans and Catholics worldwide,' Matt Ott said. Chicago embraced the pope in t-shirts, social media memes and sandwiches. Sports fans have attended Bears games dressed as Mike Ditka. Now, baseball fans are coming to Sox games as the pope. 'I saw a meme about the Bean being placed in the Vatican, I thought it was a funny thing. It's important that it's a new place for America in the world,' Liya Johny said. In Dolton, William Nowling lives next to the pope's childhood home. He knows his block is a landmark because it once sheltered Chicago's newest icon. 'I hope he at least visits the block again,' he said. 'I hope the pope moves back here. That'd be too much of a stretch, but I hope they leave it as a landmark.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. How groundbreaking gay author Edmund White paved the way for other writers

NEW YORK -- Andrew Sean Greer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, remembers the first time he read Edmund White. It was the summer of 1989, he was beginning his second year at Brown University and he had just come out. Having learned that White would be teaching at Brown, he found a copy of White's celebrated coming-of-age novel, 'A Boy's Own Story.' 'I'd never read anything like it — nobody had — and what strikes me looking back is the lack of shame or self-hatred or misery that imbued so many other gay male works of fiction of that time,' says Greer, whose 'Less' won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2018. "I, of course, did not know then I was reading a truly important literary work. All I knew is I wanted to read more. 'Reading was all we had in those days — the private, unshared experience that could help you explore your private life," he said. "Ed invented so many of us." White, a pioneer of contemporary gay literature, died this week at age 85. He left behind such widely read works as 'A Boy's Own Story' and 'The Beautiful Room Is Empty' and a gift to countless younger writers: Validation of their lives, the discovery of themselves through the stories of others. Greer and other authors speak of White's work as more than just an influence, but as a rite of passage: "How a queer man might begin to question all of the deeply held, deeply religious, deeply American assumptions about desire, love, and sex — who is entitled to have it, how it must be had, what it looks like,' says Robert Jones Jr., whose novel above love between two enslaved men, ' The Prophets,' was a National Book Award finalist in 2021. Jones remembers being a teenager in the 1980s when he read 'A Boy's Own Story." He found the book at a store in a gay neighborhood in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, 'the safest place for a person to be openly queer in New York City,' he said. 'It was a scary time for me because all the news stories about queer men revolved around AIDS and dying, and how the disease was the Christian god's vengeance against the 'sin of homosexuality,'' Jones added. 'It was the first time that I had come across any literature that confirmed that queer men have a childhood; that my own desires were not, in fact, some aberration, but were natural; and that any suffering and loneliness I was experiencing wasn't divine retribution, but was the intention of a human-made bigotry that could be, if I had the courage and the community, confronted and perhaps defeated," he said. Starting in the 1970s, White published more than 25 books, including novels, memoirs, plays, biographies and 'The Joy of Gay Sex,' a response to the 1970s bestseller 'The Joy of Sex." He held the rare stature for a living author of having a prize named for him, the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, as presented by the Publishing Triangle. 'White was very supportive of young writers, encouraging them to explore and expand new and individual visions,' said Carol Rosenfeld, chair of the Triangle. The award was 'one way of honoring that support.' Winners such the prize was founded, in 2006, have included 'The Prophets,' Myriam Gurba 's 'Dahlia Season' and Joe Okonkwo's 'Jazz Moon.' Earlier this year, the award was given to Jiaming Tang's ' Cinema Love,' a story of gay men in rural China. Tang remembered reading 'A Boy's Own Story' in his early 20s, and said that both the book and White were 'essential touchpoints in my gay coming-of-age.' 'He writes with intimate specificity and humor, and no other writer has captured the electric excitement and crushing loneliness that gay men experience as they come of age,' Tang said. "He's a towering figure. There'd be no gay literature in America without Edmund White.'
