Nigeria: FG, Kaduna govt to partner on light rail projects
During a meeting with a delegation from the Kaduna State Government, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, acknowledged the state government's eagerness to partner with the Federal Ministry of Transportation for the development of the light rail.
He emphasised that this partnership is both timely and relevant, stating that the transportation sector is crucial for the nation's economy. He noted that no country can significantly improve its GDP without an efficient and affordable transportation system.
'When I took over as the Minister of Transportation. I was directed by Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to ensure the timely delivery of all railway projects under the railway partnership. Your Excellency, the Ministry is pleased with your developmental metrics. It matched with that of our dear President in putting transportation on the top scale of your administration.
'When Mr. President visited China for a state visit. He has engaged President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China to ensure the delivery of our project from Ibadan to Abuja and Kaduna to Kano and Portharcourt to Maiduguri Your Excellency, I am pleased to inform you that we are going to deliver Kaduna to Kano segment of the railway modification project by next year. Kano to Maradi with a branchline to Dutse by next year.'
The Minister further gave the assurances of support under the directive of Mr President, that the Ministry should collaborate with the sub-nationals to ensure the development of rail transportation sector, that the Federal Ministry of Transportation would cooperate with Kaduna State to ensure timely delivery of the Kaduna Light Rail.
Alkali therefore gave an express directive the the Ministry's Permanent Secretary to set up an engagement committee between the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Kaduna state government who will give the design on how the light rail project, would be developed.
'We want to do the ground-breaking as quickly as possible. The committee will submit a report within two weeks. And you are directed to come to your inaugural meeting. I am going to inaugurate the committee on Monday. I will give you the terms of reference. I have already given you a marching order to report back to the Ministry within two weeks,' said Alkali.
Kaduna State governor, Senator Uba Sani who led the delegation appreciated the minister for repositioning the rail transportation system within and outside the country.
The governor asserted that addressing transportation-related issues would no doubt address other pressing issues such as the creation of jobs and the enhancement of productivity.
'I want to appreciate the minister for repositioning both within the country and outside. And the level of support the ministry is getting from her partners and that is why some of us at subnational have step up and that is why today with the support of our leaders President Bola Tinubu who have given this rare opportunity to give the minister.'
Sen. Uba Sani noted that Kaduna state is one of the states leading in the area of transportation, the transportation hub in the whole of northern Nigeria, and second to none after Lagos.
'Few week ago, President Bola Ahmed was in Kaduna to commission our 100 CNG buses and he attest to the fact that Kaduna is leading, and not only that, five months ago we did the ground breaking of our brt and we are embarking on 24km corridor, of our bus terminal which I have no doubt that it is the first in Nigeria. I am here to brief the minister that we are making a lot of progress. We are looking forward to commissioning the project by the 3rd quarter of next year.
'Due to this, President Tinubu selected Kaduna as one of the few states for the light rail project.
'President Tinubu has given 100 billion first instalment to support towards ensuring the light rail in Kaduna, ' he said.

Nigeria: Capital importation to reach $19.3bln in 2025, Afrinvest forecasts
Nigeria's capital importation is projected to hit $19.3 billion by the end of 2025, marking a significant 56.1 per cent increase compared to 2024, according to a forecast by Afrinvest (West) Africa Limited. The investment banking and advisory firm attributed the upbeat outlook to a favourable domestic interest rate environment, relative price and currency stability, shifting global investment sentiment amid ongoing trade tensions, and the possibility of a U.S. interest rate cut later in the year. The projection built on the $5.64 billion inflow recorded in Q1 2025—the strongest quarterly figure in five years—and, if realised, would underscore Nigeria's renewed appeal to global investors. Afrinvest noted, however, that while higher capital inflows can support currency stability and short-term economic growth, the underlying quality of the capital remains a concern. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), often regarded as the most stable and growth-enhancing form of capital, rose 6.0 percent year-on-year to $126.3 million in Q1 but slumped 70.1 percent quarter-on-quarter. FDI accounted for just 2.2 percent of total inflows, down from 3.5 percent in the same period last year. In contrast, other investments fell sharply by 53.3 percent q/q and 73.0 percent y/y to $311.2 million. Afrinvest observed that the persistent decline in FDI reflects lingering structural challenges such as insecurity, weak institutions, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and high corruption perception. These factors, combined with tepid investment in non-financial sectors including manufacturing, ICT, construction, oil & gas, and transportation, temper the optimism surrounding headline capital inflow figures. While these flows can provide immediate liquidity and foreign exchange support, they are highly sensitive to changes in domestic monetary policy, global risk sentiment, and macroeconomic shocks. Past episodes of such dependence have left the economy vulnerable to sudden capital reversals. While Afrinvest's projection points to a potential year of robust capital inflows, the firm emphasised that Nigeria must deepen structural reforms and attract more patient, sector-diverse investments to translate foreign capital into sustainable, long-term economic development.

South Africa's new water plant secures future supply for 2.4mln people
The Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Works System has officially opened at the new System 5A Water Purification Plant at Rand Water's Zuikerbosch Station in Vereeniging, Gauteng. The largest of its kind in Africa, the newly constructed System 5A, will benefit municipalities in Gauteng, parts of Mpumalanga, North West and the Free State, strengthening the region's resilience against water shortages. The plant is a key part of Rand Water's long-term infrastructure plan, and will add 600 million litres of potable water per day to the network — enough to supply an additional 2.4 million people. At the launch was President Cyril Ramaphosa who outlined how the water-treatment site marks a major milestone in securing sustainable water supply for South Africa's economic heartland, ensuring that millions of households and industries will have access to reliable, high-quality water for decades to come. In his address, he celebrated the completion of this plant, noting that the launch delivers on the commitment he made in the 2025 State of the Nation Address to take decisive steps to address South Africa's water challenges. 'We are celebrating the completion of a vital piece of infrastructure, and we are affirming our shared commitment to the people of South Africa to continuously provide clean, reliable and safe water. 'Water is not just a basic human need. It is the lifeblood of any thriving society. Water sustains life, supports industry, empowers agriculture and fuels innovation. Our people expect clean water when they turn on the tap. Clean water is not a luxury. It is a right,' the President said. The President stressed that water infrastructure is both a social imperative and an economic enabler, supporting industry, agriculture, and public health. He also called for vigilance against the theft and vandalism of infrastructure, and for a culture of consistent maintenance. A project of national importance System 5A is a flagship project of Rand Water's long-term infrastructure plan and it draws its raw water from the Vaal River via the Integrated Vaal River System. Phase 1 of System 5A, delivering 150 million litres per day, came online in August 2023, with the full 600 million litres per day capacity expected by December 2025. Its treatment process includes the dosing of lime and ferric chloride for coagulation, gravity sedimentation in 100m-long tanks, pH correction using carbon dioxide, rapid sand filtration, and final chlorination before distribution. Valued at R4.8bn, the project has delivered significant socio-economic benefits since its inception in 2019. It has created 871 jobs across skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled levels, while training more than 2,140 beneficiaries in construction-related trades. In addition, 48 small, medium, and micro enterprises have been awarded contracts worth R177.7m, and R10.4m has been invested in community development initiatives benefiting schools, early childhood development centres, and non-governmental organisations. 'Besides the additional 600m litres of water per day that will be added to Rand Water's capacity, the System 5 project has made a significant social and economic contribution. 'This project demonstrates what can be achieved when all spheres of government are working together. It encapsulates the spirit of the District Development Model,' the President said. Inside the plant Before his address, the President toured the sprawling facility, flanked by Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Dada Morero, local mayors, and Rand Water executives. The walk-through included stops at the raw water abstraction system, innovative spiral flocculators, vast sedimentation tanks, rapid sand filtration units, and the high-pressure pumping facilities that will transfer treated water into municipal reservoirs. At one point, the President paused to chat with employees, shaking hands, asking about their work, and congratulating them on the facility's scale and sophistication. One encounter drew smiles all around - Mohlago Angie Moekwa, a young Black woman and qualified water supply engineer trained at Tshwane University of Technology through NSFAS, personally guided the President through the plant. 'The real success of our democracy is that it's you. You are a Black woman, you are young, and you are our success story. When I spoke about Tintswalo in Parliament, I was speaking about you,' the President told Moekwa. The project's strategic importance lies in its ability to enhance water security for Gauteng's major metros and surrounding municipalities, support economic and industrial growth, and provide a robust supply network in the face of climate variability and population growth. It also aligns with the National Development Plan 2030's vision for sustainable, infrastructure-led growth. 'System 5 signifies a purification model for the future. Infrastructure must not only meet today's needs; it must withstand tomorrow's uncertainties. We must innovate boldly, invest wisely and ensure that our water systems are climate resilient,' the President said. The launch of System 5A coincides with Rand Water's 121st anniversary and reinforces the utility's position as one of the largest bulk water suppliers in the world. Once fully operational, the facility will stand as a generational asset for the region, securing its water supply for decades and setting a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development in South Africa.
