Kent's cinemas hope for a Bridget Jones Valentine's boost

BBC News13-02-2025
Independent cinemas are hoping for a bumper Valentine's weekend with the release of the new Bridget Jones movie as the industry continues to struggle with cost of living pressures. While it is hoped the film - which opens in the UK on Friday - will do good business at the box office, some cinema owners and operators have said this is not the norm.Cost of living pressures, the coronavirus pandemic and the changing streaming landscape have left many smaller venues fearing for their future.Andrew Eyre from the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks has a simple message: "If you don't use your local independent cinema, you'll lose it."
The above factors have forced some venues to change tact to stay afloat. Corinna Downing, co-owner of the Palace Cinema in Broadstairs, said the venue would operate on a part-time basis from April. "We just couldn't afford to stay open with energy costs and the cost of living crisis," she explained.Mrs Downing said it was "beyond our control" as fewer films were being released "which is why cinemas are showing classic blockbusters to get by".The 111 seat-venue often only fills about 30% of seats per showing, Mrs Downing explained.
However, there is a buzz around the latest instalment of screenwriter Helen Fielding's creation.Donna Taylor, general manager at The Kino in Hawkhurst, said showing Bridget Jones - Mad About the Boy would "put us on the map, bring in lots of revenue and get people talking about where they saw it and how good it was".Efforts are being made to make the experience as "accessible as possible" through mother-and-baby showings and screenings for school groups.
Louis Boswell, who also works at The Kino, said: "Huge films like this can encourage new faces to come through our doors and visit again another time."
Jo Holmes, manager of the Carlton Cinema, said there was a "pyjamas and ugly Christmas jumpers" dress code at the Westgate venue for the film."Life is hard enough, so she turns up at job interviews [and] the school gates in her PJs. It's very refreshing," she said.Ms Holmes believes big releases like Bridget Jones represent an opportunity for independent venues - one she hopes to capitalise on with themed events such as "Crafternoons", where people crochet or knit while watching the movie.Meanwhile, with the Stag Theatre still 15-20% short of pre-pandemic levels, Mr Eyre hopes this latest release will help."This weekend will certainly be big for us, it's one of the biggest films and we're hopeful it will help tickets sales," he said.
Times like these emphasise the value of independent cinema, something which Mr Eyre hopes resonates.

One expert argues that shopping for Christmas early means you'll bag the best deals XMAS COMES EARLY 'For crying out loud' fume shoppers as chocolate advent calendar ALREADY on shelves at UK supermarket Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DESPITE the UK basking in glorious sunshine and with still plenty of time left of August, some shops are sneaking in early Christmas treats. Fed-up shoppers took to social media to name and shame one supermarket after noticing an Advent calendar on its shelves. 2 The fancy Advent calendar is already in stores Credit: Facebook The shop in the firing line is B&M, after a photo of the Guylian countdown treat was shared on New Foods UK's Facebook. "For crying out loud, it is only August! Some of us haven't had our summer holiday yet," one moaned, adding angry-face emojis. Another pointed out: "The way the chocolate is going in b&m during this heat, I would hate to think what it would be like in Dec!" "It's bloody August!" a third echoed. "Can't we just enjoy summer? We'll have months of this to come," argued a forth. But not everyone was annoyed by the bargain retailers forward thinking. One person tagged her husband and wrote: "Please do not pass by this in B&M without buying me one!!" Another tagged a friend and said: "Get looking early. I'd like one of these please." The £12 calendar is filled with three different flavours of the iconic Belgian chocolates. From December 1 to 24, behind each door is a milk truffle, original seashell, or salted caramel delight. And it's not just Advent calendars that the bargain store is flogging. Another picture of seasonal goodies was shared on Dansway Gifts and Bargains UK Facebook Group. "Festive Chocolate Selection Boxes are BACK at B&M," one shopper wrote. "A few we found whilst in store today, there's lots of other Christmas chocolate to choose from!" But one disappointed customer penned: "We've not even finished summer yet or had Halloween. "I swear Christmas gets earlier and earlier every year, makes you wonder how long these chocolates sit there before we buy and save for Christmas." Another added: "Too soon for Christmas but I'd still scoff them." While it may feel premature to start stocking up on Christmas treats, bargain hunters often bag better deals in the off-season. In fact, one expert has shared why now is the ideal time to buy your festive decorations, and where to buy them. 2 B&M is also flogging selection packs of chocolates Credit: Alamy

WE all love B&M (especially me). It's a one-stop-shop where you can nab all things from gardenware and homeware, to snacks and cleaning supplies. Not only do we love the variety B&M offers (because after all, who can be bothered to go to five different shops anymore?!), but the prices are brilliant too. If you're on a budget, B&M is definitely worth vising - as it's full of cheap bargain buys. Not only will you find affordable items, but B&M is full of dupes too - so if you're after beauty buys without the designer price tag, you'll need to take a trip. Similar to this, the chain are eager to get on trends - so if you see something in H&M Home but are on a budget and can't justify the price, give it a few weeks and you'll probably spot something similar on the shelves in your local B&M.

ScotRail saw busiest week of 2025 as Oasis played in Scotland

Almost two million people travelled on Scotland's railways recently, with many attending the concerts at Murrayfield Stadium as well as various festivals in Edinburgh, including the Fringe. Music fans descended on the rail network as Noel and Liam Gallagher prepared to play three shows in Scotland after getting back together and going on tour for the first time since Oasis disbanded in 2009. Around 328,000 commuters packed onto trains on Friday, August 8, to see the Mancunian rockers. The rail operator noted that this is a 19 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared with the same day last year. We previously reported that huge queues had been spotted spilling out of Glasgow Queen Street station on August 8 as concert goers eagerly waited to board services to the capital. READ NEXT: Huge queues lined out Glasgow station ahead of Oasis gig On Saturday, August 9, around 327,000 people travelled by train across the country. ScotRail stated that those were the busiest days on its network since December 14, traditionally the weekend when most Christmas parties and nights out take place. The last of Oasis' Scottish gigs took place on Tuesday, August 12, and delivered a further boost in numbers. This meant that from the week of Friday, August 8, 1,995,000 people travelled on ScotRail services. Ahead of the sold-out run of gigs at Murrayfield, extra trains and seats were put on by ScotRail to accommodate fans. Rail staff were also seen getting into the spirit of things, with some donning special Oasis-themed bucket hats and posing for photos with customers. David Ross, ScotRail chief operating officer, said: 'This week once again confirms that ScotRail is increasingly the travel mode of choice for people going to large events in Scotland. 'The fact that we've just delivered the busiest week of 2025 so far shows how important large concerts and events are to our business and the Scottish economy. 'Our frontline staff once again delivered an excellent service for almost two million customers who chose to travel with ScotRail.' Next week, rock superstars AC/DC will be taking to the stage at Murrayfield on Thursday, August 21. Fans heading to the show are being advised that extra services and seats have also been added for this gig. For further information, visit ScotRail's website HERE.
