Osaka ready to spread her grasscourt wings after being paralysed by fear
The Japanese player, who has won all four of her Grand Slam titles on the hardcourts of Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadows, has never found her comfort zone on the green, green grass of Wimbledon, making only four previous appearances during her 10-year professional career.
During those four visits to the All England Club, she won a total of just five matches, with third-round showings in 2017 and 2018 her standout performances - hardly anything to shout about for a woman who has been ranked on top of the world.
But after matching her best ever Wimbledon showing on Wednesday with an impressive 6-3 6-2 win over Czech Katerina Siniakova, who has won the Wimbledon women's doubles title three times, Osaka feels she has finally overcome the fear factor on grass.
"When I was younger, I had no fear. I think when you are young, you fear nothing, and that's one of the really cool things about it," explained Osaka, now ranked 53 as she continues to try to recapture her best form after taking a maternity break in 2023.
"But with age fear kind of crept along and, I guess, paralysed me in a way. Now I'm kind of just getting over that and trying to spread my wings on grass.
"I think it is working, and I think I am moving pretty well. Yeah, I just hope that in years to come and hopefully this year I can do a lot better in this tournament."
Osaka could not have picked a better year to enjoy a deep run at the tournament.
Following the carnage of seeds over the first three days, the highest seeds she could meet before a potential semi-final against either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or Australian Open champion Madison Keys are number 13 Amanda Anisimova or number 30 Linda Noskova - neither of whom are known for their grasscourt pedigree.
After two straight-set victories, she will certainly fancy her chances of defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the last 16 here for the first time, considering the Russian has not beaten her since 2017.
"Definitely this year I feel a lot more comfortable moving on grass," said Osaka after improving her Wimbledon win-loss record to 7-4 on the day her daughter Shai was celebrating her second birthday.
"I know the last couple of years I was really scared to move because when I was younger, I strained my knee or whatever. It took a couple of years to get over that but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable."

He was the perfect fit for former Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp's ultra-high-intensity pressing game and when the German stepped aside at Anfield last year, Jota symbolically grabbed the first goal of new boss Arne Slot's Premier League title-winning campaign. In his five years at Liverpool, he won every piece of domestic silverware available, adding last season's league title to a trophy cabinet that already included the League Cup and FA Cups he won in 2022. While for Portugal, he missed out on the biggest prizes the game has to offer, but still lifted two Nations League titles. Mayer set to stand against Ben Sulayem for FIA presidency
SILVERSTONE, England :Mohammed Ben Sulayem will face a challenge to his bid for re-election as president of the FIA, motorsport's world governing body, after a rival candidate emerged on Thursday. The BBC reported American Tim Mayer, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, would announce on Friday he was standing against the Emirati. A press conference was called at a venue outside the Silverstone circuit ahead of British Grand Prix practice. Mayer, 59, told the BBC last November that he had been fired via text message by an assistant to Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, an Emirati, is scheduled to attend the race which marks the midpoint in the Formula One season. He has already announced he is seeking a second term. The FIA is the governing body for F1, the world rally championship and Formula E among other series.

Gill leads India's charge against England but Jadeja falls short of century
BIRMINGHAM, England :India dominated the opening session on day two of the second test against England on Thursday as skipper Shubman Gill put a price on his wicket to guide the tourists to 419-6 at lunch but Ravindra Jadeja fell short of a second century at Edgbaston. Resuming on 310-5, Gill and Jadeja wasted no time asserting their dominance, bringing up their 100-run partnership off the first ball of the day before continuing to pile on the runs as England's attack toiled in the sun. Jadeja, who scored a hundred at Edgbaston three years ago, was quickly halfway to another ton early in the session and, true to form, he brought out his trademark sword-swinging celebration before he continued to score at will. While Gill showcased his elegant array of drives and well-timed flicks, Jadeja showed no mercy to anything short, pulling the ball to the boundary with ease as the pitch offered precious little assistance to England's fast bowlers. Gill's 147 in the first test had been his highest score in the red-ball format but he cruised past that milestone with sublime ease before bringing up his 150, raising his bat to acknowledge the appreciative crowd. Spinner Shoaib Bashir also had no luck as Jadeja danced down the track to clear the ropes and bring up India's 400 while, in the same over, Gill swept him over the deep square leg boundary to bring up the 200 partnership. Josh Tongue had been England's most expensive fast bowler but he finally made the breakthrough when he banged it in very short and the extra bounce surprised Jadeja as it came off his glove to give wicketkeeper Jamie Smith a simple catch. Washington Sundar walked in and he was welcomed with a barrage of bouncers from Tongue but he survived the short balls before lunch was called, with Gill unbeaten on 168.
