Wallabies upset Springboks at Ellis Park from 22-0 down in Rugby Championship
The Wallabies scored a remarkable six straight tries against the double world champion and Rugby Championship titleholder to earn the signature win of Joe Schmidt's 18-month coaching reign.
Australia came to the highveld battle-hardened from the narrow home series loss to the British and Irish Lions, but its record in South Africa made it an obvious underdog. It hadn't won in South Africa since 2011 or at Ellis Park since 1963.
The Springboks underlined their credentials by sprinting to 22-0 in 17 minutes with three well-made tries.
But they never scored again.
Australia didn't panic, absorbed the blows, tightened its defense and watched a Springboks side packed with 18 World Cup winners wobble as the pressure was returned.
The Wallabies were 22-5 down at halftime, and went ahead for the first time in the 64th minute through captain Harry Wilson's second try and last act of the match. They added two more tries to finish the stronger team at an altitude in which they have traditionally struggled for decades.

The Milwaukee Brewers erased an early seven-run deficit to come back and defeat the Cincinnati Reds Friday night. The rally secured the Brewers' 13th straight win and added to the best record in MLB. The Brewers' winning streak tied the franchise's single-season record previously set in 1987. The Reds jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after a seven-run second inning. They chased Brewers' All-Star pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, who was making his first start since July 28 due to injury, after just 1⅓ innings. The Brewers wasted no time responding, scoring five runs in the top of the third inning. Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich began the scoring with an RBI double to cut it to 8-2. A couple of batters later, first baseman Andrew Vaughn swatted a three-run home run to make it 8-5. Second baseman Brice Turang ripped a double and scored third baseman Caleb Durbin to cut the lead to 8-6. After keeping the Reds off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, the Brewers went back to work in the top of the fourth inning. Yelich came up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out and slashed a ground ball down the third baseline for a double. Two runs scored to tie the game at 8-8. Yelich's big game continued when he hit a solo home run off Reds' reliever Scott Barlow to give the Brewers a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Brewers tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning when left fielder Brandon Lockridge scored on Sam Moll's wild pitch to make it 10-8, where the score would remain. The red-hot Brewers have won 28 of their last 32 games and own the best record in Major League Baseball. The Brewers (77-44) will go for a single-season franchise-record win streak when they take on the Reds (64-59) in the second game of their three-game series Saturday at 6:40 p.m. ET.

Birmingham City boss Davies on 'deserved' comeback and penalty call
Chris Davies felt his side Birmingham City side deserved their late comeback against Rovers at Ewood Park. The Midlands club had trailed after Todd Cantwell's volley but scored twice in stoppage time to turn the contest on its head. Davies hailed his side's character in a "very difficult situation" after going 1-0 down on the road. 'It was an excellent win,' he said after the final whistle. 'Last minute winners are always something to cherish and savour, especially in front of 7,000 travelling fans. 'It's that intangible character side that is so important in football. We have got belief and we've shown in the early games that we've competed really well. 'I think we have been the better team in all the three games that we've had, league and cup, this season. 'But a goal down away from home at Blackburn Rovers - very, very difficult situation - and then you can lose your head or discipline or start doing different things. 'What I love is we just look like us. We had it in the week [against Sheffield United] with what we felt was an unjust goal against us. 'But we just got back to us, moved the ball quickly, positions were there with real intent, and we deserved to win this game.' The equaliser came from the penalty spot after Sidnei Tavares was judged to have tripped Ethan Laird in the box. When asked if it was the right call, Davies insisted: 'Absolutely, 100 per cent. 'I think when Ethan is driving at that speed - he sort of dropped his shoulder and took his touch in the side - because he's right-footed as well, if he doesn't sort of foul him then he could shoot or lay the ball off to someone. 'So definitely, and I'm really pleased for Ethan because he had to come in to left-back – very unnatural position for him - but he handled it so well up against the winger who is pretty decent. And yeah, a definite penalty.' The Birmingham boss was also quizzed about an incident involving Jay Stansfield, who slotted home the equaliser. 'He said someone had thrown something onto his head so I'm not sure what all that was about, but I don't want to see any of that,' Davies explained. 'It's a shame but I think he's OK, I haven't found out any more about it.'

But the Wallabies are otherwise savouring a truly incredible win at Ellis Park. The two-time defending world champion Springboks looked set to consign Australia's last-up victory over the British and Irish Lions to a distant memory when they raced out to their 22-0 lead inside 18 minutes. Schmidt described the Wallabies' start as "horrendous" and said relief was his over-riding emotion in the immediate aftermath to a pulsating encounter. His side trailing 22-5 at the break, Schmidt felt the Wallabies could still win. "We talked mostly about the second 20 (minutes)," he told Stan Sport. "We won the second 5-0, and we said, 'Well, if we can win the second 5-0, we can win the next 5-0 and then we're in the game. "And once we got into the game, I just felt that we grew in confidence." Needing something special, Angus Bell delivered first for the Wallabies, the replacement prop's deft short putting Wilson over two minutes into the second half. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii then intercepted a cut-out pass from Springboks flyhalf Manie Libbok to suddenly pull the score back to 22-19. Then the unthinkable happened. The Wallabies hit the lead for the first time when Wright broke free from inside his own half to put Wilson over for his second try to give the Wallabies a shock lead. Playing his first Test since 2022 and a record-breaking 17 years after debuting, O'Connor found Max Jorgensen with a beautiful left-to-right long ball before the winger did the rest in another magical long-range strike for Australia. The coach was unsure how serious the injuries to Wilson and Pietsch were. "Pietsch, obviously he did hurt his jaw. We're not sure to what degree at the moment," Schmidt said. "I'd love to think it's just bruising but we're going to have to get a little bit of a look at that in time. "And with Harry as well, he got a bit of a wobble on it but he's feeling a little bit more comfortable now. "So we live in hope."
