Dubai Police rescue driver 'in minutes' after cruise control malfunctions on Sheikh Zayed Road
'(Our) operations room received a report about a vehicle travelling at a constant speed on Sheikh Zayed Road towards Abu Dhabi, with the female driver unable to regain control due to the cruise control malfunction,' said Maj Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police.
'Just minutes after receiving the report, the traffic patrols were immediately dispatched to the location and spotted the vehicle traveling in the fourth lane.
'They coordinated a careful escort while guiding the female driver through phone calls and direct instructions, informing her of the necessary steps to take in such situations to ensure her safety and that of others,' he added.
How they did it
Al Mazrouei explained one of the patrols positioned itself in front of the vehicle, gradually stopping it, while the other patrols secured the lane behind it.
The patrols created a safe corridor in front of and behind the vehicle, keeping other cars at a distance to prevent any potential collisions, which allowed for a safe stop on the side of the road without any injuries or damage.
Al Mazrouei said the swift response and effective coordination between the operations room and field patrols were vital for successfully managing the situation. He praised the traffic teams for their professional and compassionate handling of emergencies, demonstrating Dubai Police's commitment to rapid responses and road safety.
He also urged all drivers to perform regular vehicle checks and ensure the safety of critical systems, such as brakes and cruise control, emphasising that awareness and preventive measures are essential to prevent dangerous malfunctions.

Dubai Police Deployed 752 Mounted Patrols in First Half of 2025
Dubai Police's Mounted Police Station carried out 752 mounted patrols across the emirate during the first half of 2025, covering industrial, commercial, and tourist zones. These patrols helped issue traffic fines, conduct vehicle and individual security checks, and provide safety at sporting facilities. Lieutenant Colonel Dhahi Al Jallaf, Acting Director of the Mounted Police Station, highlighted that mounted patrols are a crucial part of Dubai's security strategy, not only supporting law enforcement but also boosting community confidence. Their ability to access areas inaccessible to police cars has made them highly effective in crime prevention. The unit operates through four deployment points, ensuring full coverage of Dubai. Beyond security, the Mounted Police Station also engages the community through therapeutic riding programs, which benefited 93 participants in partnership with various agencies. These programs achieved a 100% satisfaction rate among parents and a 97% improvement rate in training results. The unit also runs the 'Ride with the Mounted Police' volunteer program, with 80 volunteers joining events in the first half of the year. Recent achievements include receiving the Dubai Municipality's Gold Accreditation Certificate for accessibility standards, winning the Arab Ideas Award for its therapeutic riding initiative, and representing the UAE at the International Military Tent Pegging Championship in Egypt. Looking forward, the station is exploring innovations such as a virtual training center, AI-based equine health prediction, and a Smart Stable Project integrating advanced technology for horse care and stable management.

Dubai: Can car rental companies charge drivers for stains, regular wear and tear?
Question: I rented a car on a long-term basis. When I returned it, there were some stains on the seats, as could be expected from regular wear and tear. Can the company now charge me for cleaning those stains? Answer: In the UAE, car rental and leasing services are regulated under Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 on Traffic Regulation. According to Article 29 of this law, rental companies must be licensed by the relevant authority and are obligated to ensure that the renter holds a valid driving licence recognised in the UAE. Here's what Article 29 says: '1. Vehicles shall be rented and leased in accordance with the provisions of this Decree-Law and the legislation in force in the State in this regard. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. 2. Vehicle rental activity may not be practised unless a licence is obtained from the Competent Authorities. The Executive Regulations of this Decree-Law shall determine the conditions for practising vehicle rental activity. 3 .Companies licensed to engage in vehicle rental activities shall ensure the validity of driving licences approved in the State, duplicated or recognised by the renter, in accordance with the controls and procedures specified in the Executive Regulations of this Decree-Law. 4. The Executive Regulations of this Decree-Law shall determine the controls for renting vehicles, the obligations of the drivers of these vehicles, and the procedures for registering them.' Assuming you rented a car from a company based in Dubai, there are additional local regulations that apply. All car rental companies in Dubai are required to return consumers' credit card holds and other deposits within 30 days of the vehicle's return. This directive comes from the Dubai Corporation for Consumer Protection and Fair Trade, which operates under the Department of Economy and Tourism. In accordance with these, when it comes to cleaning charges, whether or not you're liable depends largely on the terms of your rental agreement. While some level of wear and tear (such as minor stains or signs of regular use) is generally expected, the rental company may be entitled to deduct a reasonable amount for cleaning. You may review the rental agreement you signed with the rental company, particularly any clauses related to vehicle condition upon return and cleaning fees. Typically, such incidental costs — like cleaning or minor damage — are covered by your security deposit. If you feel the charges are unreasonable or were not clearly disclosed, you can request a detailed breakdown from the rental company. If the issue remains unresolved, you may also consider reaching out to the relevant consumer protection authority for further assistance.
