With a large choice of body styles and trim levels, the pick-up truck is good value for money, with prices starting from £32,916.
In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John tests out the popular Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck and previews two new Enyaq models on the way from Skoda.
The award-winning Isuzu D-Max pick-up is tough enough to get the job done in fields and construction sites and is now stylish enough to shine in the adventure and leisure market.

With a large choice of body styles and trim levels it is also good value for money, with prices starting from £32,916.

The 2025 version comes with fresh design enhancements, a revamped infotainment system as well as improved off-road performance and increased comfort and safety features.
The Japanese company only makes commercial vehicles and its D-Max pick-up truck is the only model it sells in the UK.
It has a strong following and has built its solid reputation on being a tough and reliable workhorse but in the last couple of years Isuzu has transformed the D-Max to make it a player in the lifestyle and adventure market.
The V-Cross Double Cab model I have been sampling is the flagship of the range and with the recent updates it is now even more appealing to the private market.
As well as the revised exterior styling, the V-Cross has leather upholstery, heated front seats, a nine-inch multifunction colour touchscreen, electrically adjustable driver's seat, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Its 4x4 powertrain and rear differential lock means it is as good off-road as it is on it and the D-Max is a match for much more expensive competition.
Many other technical and comfort features that you would expect to find in a family SUV are also standard.
Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are now fitted on all models, including autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning and prevention and rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor and emergency lane keeping are fitted on all double cab versions.

As a result, the pick-up even boasts a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
Thanks to other modifications the wheelbase is longer and this means that the cabin is even more spacious than before with larger rear doors making access easier.
Only one engine is available throughout the range, a tried and tested 1.9-litre turbodiesel unit which delivers 162bhp and 360Nm of torque.

It completes the 0-62mph sprint in 13 seconds and can go onto a maximum of 112mph.
It is noisy on start-up but it soon settles down and is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. You can opt for a manual version if you wish.

Like most pick-ups it is not light on fuel with an average 30.7mpg claimed for this double cab auto and emissions run at 241g/km.
It may be the lifestyle model of the strong range but the V-Cross still offers the usual workhorse features, with a one-tonne payload and up to 3.5 tonnes towing capacity.
Sensors warn of towing sway and Hill Descent Control is standard on all variants.

The D-Max has always been a great performer off-road and the addition of a rear diff-lock has made it even better.
The speed -sensitive steering makes the D-Max surprisingly easy to manoeuvre in town and out of town it stiffens up nicely to give you more feel and control.
It may not be the flashiest pick-up available but the Isuzu offers good value for money all through the large range of models and it is certainly worth a look. It also boasts an excellent five-year warranty.

Meanwhile, Czech manufacturer Skoda is expanding its new Enyaq range with the addition of a SportLine model that will sit alongside the recently introduced 85x 4WD model.

Available in SUV and Coupe body styles, the new SportLine 85 shares its looks and sharp driving dynamics with the all-wheel-drive 85x.
But, with a single-motor drivetrain, it delivers even greater efficiency and longer driving ranges.

Available to order from this week, with prices starting at £47,260 and the Coupe from £49,160, both new Enyaq SportLine 85 models feature 82 kWh battery packs and are powered by a rear-mounted motor that generates 286ps.
This allows the new models to sprint from 0–62 mph in 6.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 111 mph.
In terms of efficiency, the SportLine 85 SUV returns up to 354 miles while the more aero-efficient Coupe offers up to 356 miles - both figures higher than those delivered by the all-wheel-drive 85x version.

Rapid DC charging can be carried out at speeds of up to 135kW, while AC charging peaks at 11kW. When conditions allow, a 10–80 per cent charge on a suitable rapid DC charger can be achieved in around 28 minutes.
Like the SportLine 85x, the single-motor SportLine 85 comes with 20-inch black alloy wheels, sports bumpers, and gloss black styling details as standard.
Inside, SportLine drivers benefit from a head-up display, front sports seats, sports steering wheel, and a CANTON sound system.

Both variants are equipped with progressive dynamic steering and sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear.
Both models also feature a variable boot floor and Area View camera as standard.

JOHN MURDOCH'S DRIVE TIME: We sample the new Polestar 4 and reveal prices for the new Nissan Micra model

The car is manufactured in China and Polestar has put absolutely everything onto the touchscreen apart from a volume control for the sound system. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John samples the new Polestar 4, an all-electric coupe style SUV, and reveals the prices for the new Nissan Micra model, with order books opening next month. ‌ The Polestar 4 is a smart-looking SUV with coupe styling that gets lots of attention - mainly because it has no rear window. ‌ It may offer an excellent range between charges and stacks of equipment and technology, as well as impressive performance and lots of space but most people focused on the lack of a rear window. ‌ The Swedish/Chinese manufacturer has replaced the rear window with a live camera which feeds onto a digital mirror and although it works perfectly, I found it difficult to get used to. The car is manufactured in China and Polestar has put absolutely everything onto the touchscreen apart from a volume control for the sound system and some drivers will love that while others may struggle with it. Customers can choose between single or dual motor models, offering rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, respectively. Both versions feature a Long range 100kWh battery, with the Dual motor I sampled providing significantly more power. It cost £67,000 in standard form but with metallic paint at £1400 and Animal Welfare Nappa leather at £3100, the final total was £71,500. ‌ The test car came with 22" alloy wheels and a Pilot Pack as standard, which introduces semi-autonomous driving features like lane keeping and automatic parking. Also Included in the cost was the Plus Pack, featuring a super 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 14.7-inch head-up display, upgraded pixel LED headlights with adaptive high beam, and a powered soft-closing tailgate with foot sensor operation. The Polestar 4 is a handsome car and the panoramic glass roof tapers away towards the rear, while there are dual blade headlights, an illuminated Polestar logo and flush door handles, giving it a sporty look. ‌ The cabin is elegant and clutter-free, with minimal physical controls. Instead, the 15.4-inch infotainment screen serves as the central hub for nearly all functions, from adjusting the steering wheel and regenerative braking settings to switching drive modes and even opening the glovebox. This screen also controls the sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, the sound system, reversing camera, Bluetooth and Google Assistant. The comfortable seats are powered and heated as is the steering wheel and the outer rear seats. ‌ All the driving data like speed, range, and battery levels are displayed on a clear driver information screen behind the steering wheel and there is also a head-up display. When it comes to performance, the Polestar 4 is quick. It boasts 544 bhp and can sprint to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 124mph. The single motor version is still nippy and tackles the sprint in 7.1 seconds and has the same top speed. ‌ This model can go 367 miles between charges depending on conditions and it performed well on both country roads and motorway runs. With AWD it provided stacks of grip and you can opt for single-pedal driving. ‌ Five adults can travel in comfort, with lots of leg, shoulder and headroom even in the rear and the huge glass roof means there is lots of light. The boot, accessed via a powered tailgate, provides 526 litres of storage, extending to 1536 litres with the rear seats down. There's also a covered storage compartment under the bonnet for an additional 15 litres. A wireless charging pad is another bonus. ‌ Charging the 100kWh battery from 10-80 per cent takes just 30 minutes via a 200kW fast charger. A 11kW home charger takes about 11 hours for a full charge and 17.5 hours from a normal domestic socket. As you would expect from a car of this quality it has all the latest driver assist and safety features to protect occupants and other road users. ‌ There is no doubt that the Polestar 4 is a quality product that is crammed with technology but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I did not have to use the screen to adjust everything. It was not always easy on the move and a few buttons for climate and entertainment functions would make it more pleasant from my point of view. Meanwhile, Nissan has confirmed pricing for the sixth-generation Micra - and it will cost from £22,995 for the all-electric supermini. ‌ That is similar to its new Renault 5 sister with which it shares much. Pricing will start from £22,995 for the 40kWh Engage model. ‌ Mid-grade Advanced trim models will cost from £24,995 and top specification Evolve versions with a larger 52kWh battery will be available from £29,865. As such, the all new Micras should qualify for the Government's new Electric Car Grant which is worth up to £1500. The official range now reaches 260 miles for the 52kWh battery and 198 miles for the 40kWh battery, a respective gain of around seven miles of range compared to the initial announcement. ‌ Quick charging from 15 per cent to 80 per cent takes 30 minutes. To maximise the charging efficiency, a heat pump is standard on both battery options, as well as battery heating and cooling capability. The new Micra integrates Google Built-in services via the NissanConnect infotainment system, with Google Maps supplied as standard. ‌ The latter also plays a key role in route planning. If the destination exceeds the available range, the system automatically identifies charging stations along the route, considering the charge level, average consumption, and temperature. It can even precondition the battery to ensure optimal charging speed. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB said: "Micra is the first of four new fully electric models to arrive on the Nissan lineup and we are incredibly excited to be pricing it so competitively. Micra is a key strategic model for Nissan." ‌ The new Micra pays homage to previous generations of the iconic model - a compact city car that has sold more than six million units worldwide since its launch in 1983. Nissan says order banks will open at the beginning of next month.

New Nissan Qashqai drives full length of UK – and finishes with 100 miles of petrol to spare!

Nissan has driven a Qashqai fitted with its new e-Power hybrid powertrain the length of the UK – from Land's End to John O'Groats – on a single tank of fuel. The powertrain, which was recently updated to improve its efficiency and refinement, yielded 75mpg in the hands of Nissan engineers while completing the 837-mile drive. That marked an improvement on the result achieved by Nissan on the same journey in 2007, when a 1.5-litre diesel-engined Qashqai clocked 67mpg. According to Nissan, the e-Power car's trip took 18 hours (over two days) and the car reached John O'Groats with enough petrol left in its tank to drive a further 100 miles. The e-Power system behaves differently to most conventional hybrid powertrains: the turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine doesn't drive the wheels at all, instead generating electricity for a small 1.8kWh battery which in turn powers an electric motor. The motor is the car's sole driving force, putting out 201bhp and 243lb ft of torque. Earlier this year, the system was upgraded to a new 'five-in-one' construction, integrating the motor, generator, inverter, increaser and reducer into one package. As well as being smaller, this also improves responsiveness, Nissan claimed. The test result of 75mpg marks a considerable improvement over the system's official economy figure of 62.8mpg. However, Nissan hasn't published an average speed or detailed its driving style for the trip. Slow, gentle driving can net much greater economy than is reflected by official laboratory tests.

VinFast founder to inject another $1.5 billion in exchange for R&D assets

Aug 14 (Reuters) - VinFast's (VFS.O), opens new tab founder Pham Nhat Vuong has agreed to buy the EV maker's research and development arm for $1.52 billion, his latest cash injection into the loss-making Vietnamese company as it strives to break even by the end of 2026. The deal will involve Novatech Research and Development JSC, a Vietnam-incorporated entity, being carved out of VinFast Trading and Production JSC (VFTP), its domestic manufacturing arm, VinFast said in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Novatech will hold investment costs tied to completed R&D projects, while VFTP will continue to lead EV production and future research in Vietnam. VinFast, which debuted on the Nasdaq in 2023, has faced challenges including weak consumer demand and stiff competition. It made a net loss of $712.4 million for the first quarter, although revenue jumped 150% to $656.5 million. VinFast's shares were up 1.4% to $3.59 in pre-market trade. Since its launch in 2017, the company has relied heavily on support from Vuong, who holds about 98% of shares in VinFast and its parent company Vingroup ( opens new tab, where he serves as chairman. The transfer of shares in Novatech to Vuong, valued at nearly 40 trillion dong ($1.52 billion), comprises a fair value assessment of 17.25 trillion dong plus a premium. Intellectual property linked to Novatech's assets will be leased back to VinFast for manufacturing purposes as needed. VinFast has said it has completed the development of its first generation of EVs. Research and development costs were $81.2 million in the first quarter of 2025, down 22.3% year-on-year. The EV maker has set a delivery target of 200,000 cars for 2025, more than double its deliveries in 2024. Most of VinFast's deliveries are in the Vietnamese market. ($1 = 26,230.0000 dong)
